5.1 magnitude earthquake in North Korea, declared as country’s third underground nuclear test

NK 2-12
February 12, 2013 NORTH KOREAPresident Obama called North Korea’s latest nuclear test “a highly provocative act” that undermines regional stability and threatens international peace. North Korea announced earlier today that it successfully tested a miniaturized nuclear device underground, according to state media. Official state media said the test was conducted in a safe manner and is aimed at coping with “outrageous’ U.S. hostility that “violently” undermines the North’s peaceful, sovereign rights to launch satellites. Unlike previous tests, North Korea used a powerful explosive nuclear bomb that is smaller and lighter, state media reported. North Korea kept up its belligerent talk today, vowing more provocative actions. If the U.S. “makes this situation complex in hostility, we will come up with second and third reactions,” North Korea said in a statement. The regime blamed the nuclear test on the United States. “Originally we didn’t have to test the nuclear bomb and we didn’t plan to,’ the statement said. “The major purpose of this test is to show our anger to the hostile actions of the U.S. and show off our will and capability to protect our sovereign right to the end.” The statement lashed out at the U.S.-led sanctions as well as the search of North Korean ships that are suspected of exporting illegal arms. “We will consider the search of our ships and other sanctions by the international community as an act of war. And it will bring on our relentless retaliatory attack,” North Korea said. “The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies. “The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and steadfast in our defense commitments to allies in the region,” he added. The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on North Korea’s nuclear test later this morning. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement expressing “firm opposition” to the test. “We strongly urge the DPRK (North Korea) to abide by its denuclearization commitments, and to refrain from further actions that could lead to a deterioration of the situation”” the statement read. “Safeguarding Korean Peninsula and East Asian peace and stability serves the shared interests of all parties.” China, North Korea’s main ally in the region, has warned North Korea it would cut back severely needed food assistance if it carried out a test. Each year China donates approximately half of the food North Korea lacks to feed its people and half of all oil the country consumes. Suspicions were aroused when the U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected a magnitude 4.9 earthquake Tuesday in North Korea. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization told ABC News, “We confirm that a suspicious seismic event has taken place in North Korea. The event shows clear explosion-like characteristics and its location is roughly congruent with the 2006 and 2009 DPRK nuclear tests,” said Tibor Toth, executive secretary of the organization. –ABC News

  1. Not very comforting. I read an article tying together Iran and North Korea, which we knew, but this tied in Iran’s recent push to launch a monkey and a satelite into space. So now, Iran has the launching mechanism and No. Korea has the nuclear material. They both are tied together with the hatred of the west. And scientists from Iran are usually present in No. Korea for the building and testing, and vice versa.

Wow, now Iran can back off its nuclear program, but how is N. Korea going to deliver the missiles to Iran?

5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you.
6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.
7 But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet.
8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.

I’m sorry, how many millions of dollars were we paying them to not build nuclear weapons? I want a refund.

Their reasoning for detonating the devise sounds childish. Now it seem that the US is standing in front of a child bearing a loaded gun. I’m concerned about what our future actions will bring.

I’m probably the least expert on earthquakes, but because of whats happening in the Santa Cruz Islands and New Zea Land, I was wondering if the ring of fire would produce earthquakes all along Japan, China, the Koreas and then South American coast, California, Alaska and the earthquakes did arrive in the last days so I wasn’t surprised that North Korea had an earthquake.

It seems that political motivated news by all sides is overshadowing the cause of the earthquakes and might not an earthquake have occur ed where North Korea is supposedly testing underground Nuclear weapons. It still makes their nuclear testing that much more dangerous; as is the ring of fire.

The earthquake had the signature of a nuclear detonation. Apparently they can easily tell the difference between a real earthquake and one from a nuclear explosion. Which makes sense since the US has exploded more nuclear bombs on this planet than anyone else.

North Korea is volatile. I’m alarmed that North K is recklessly performing nuclear tests while the seismic activity has been steadily increasing. I’m glad North K. isn’t on top of a super-volcano like Campi Flegrei in Italy or Yellowstone in the US. I’ve also been watching the earthquakes post on http://quakes.globalincidentmap.com/ and there were significant quakes at the same time as the North Korean quake along both sides of the Pacific coast.

        Alvin,
Would you consider doing another post on the increased seismic events along the ring of fire? I enjoyed reading your article “Earth reeling from eight major earthquakes striking in 5 days on Feb 2ed”. Are the recent quakes in New Zealand and Santa Cruz effecting the ring of fire and then also the quakes further inland such as the 5.1 Nevada-California quake and today Siberia quakes?

Also where can I get more information on your radio season? Thank you for all your news reports I look forward to them daily.

Well, could this-in-your-face approach by North Korea just shows how far we have slipped as a world power? At the beginning of the decade they would not have done this. They can do this now because they see the decline………or they have a big supporter who is funding this adventure.

This is an interesting statement, considering that everyone is escalating their nuclear arsenal while we dismantle ours. . . .

N.Korea nuclear test may cause volcano eruption near Chinese border
The anticipated North Korean third nuclear test may trigger an eruption of Mt. Baekdu, a dormant volcano, which is located not far from the North Korean Punggye-ri nuclear site, claims a South Korean geologist.

“A nuclear test will probably exert a direct or indirect impact on volcanic activity at the mountain, and this is worrisome,” said Yoon Sung-ho as cited by Yonhap News agency. Yoon is a geological scientist at Pusan National University, who is considered to be the South Korean leading expert on Mt. Baekdu.

Amazed still, I thought that 21122012 will usher in some wisdom, guess I was wrong. Shouldn’t be surprised why there is so much chaos surrounding us. Wake up or we loose everything, we can usher in the golden age but you have to see the truth then feel. Why do you want to be a world power, ask yourself if that’s a God given right. We own nothing, God owns everything even you and I. God says love thy neighbour not terrorize them. Who do want to believe, believe it or not, punishment awaits and it will continue to do so till you can feel love and compassion for another individual outside your little box. Till you open your eyes there will always be pain and suffering. You are paying the ultimate price but you are so blind to it, so are your children because your minds don’t see rationality, it baffles me. I’m pure of heart and saddened by the comments. My heart goes out to all the abused. If you love god you will love everything he created. God made me special and I never fitted anywhere because I didn’t want the same as others. Running barefoot with hair open on a windy day made me happy, not that fancy car or house, I’m so blessed my R1 goes a long way, because he is great… May god be our guidance, amen.

I think it is very foolish for any one to do nuclear testing given the current stability of the earth’s crust, they won’t need the weapons if the planet falls apart from testing.

I’m not condoning NKs actions, but at least if was on their territory. I’m not saying our position as a world power has not slipped, but It started well before the biginning of the decade.
