Scientists dismayed by unending string of disasters plaguing U.S.

September 3, 2011WASHINGTON, DC – Nature is pummeling the United States this year with extremes. Unprecedented triple-digit Fahrenheit (38-plus degree Celsius) heat and devastating drought. Deadly tornadoes leveling towns. Massive rivers overflowing. A billion-dollar blizzard. And now, unusual hurricane-caused flooding in the northeastern state of Vermont. If what’s falling from the sky isn’t enough, the ground shook in places that normally seem stable: Colorado and the entire East Coast. On Friday, a strong quake triggered brief tsunami warnings in Alaska. Arizona and New Mexico have broken records for wildfires. Total weather losses top $35 billion, and that’s not counting Hurricane Irene, according to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. There have been more than 700 U.S. disaster and weather deaths, most from the tornado outbreaks this spring. Last year, the world seemed to go wild with natural disasters in the deadliest year in a generation. But 2010 was bad globally, and the United States mostly was spared. This year, while there have been devastating events elsewhere, such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Australia’s flooding and a drought in Africa, it’s is the United States’ turn to get smacked. “I’m hoping for a break. I’m tired of working this hard. This is ridiculous,” said Jeff Masters, a meteorologist who runs Weather Underground, a meteorology service that tracks strange and extreme weather. “I’m not used to seeing all these extremes all at once in one year.” The U.S. has had a record 10 weather catastrophes costing more than a billion dollars: five separate tornado outbreaks, two different major river floods in the Upper Midwest and the Mississippi River, drought in the Southwest and a blizzard that crippled the Midwest and Northeast, and Irene.
The East Coast got a double-whammy in one week with a magnitude 5.8 earthquake followed by a drenching from Irene. If one place felt more besieged than others, it was tiny Mineral, Virginia, the epicenter of the quake, where Louisa County Fire Lt. Floyd Richard stared at the darkening sky before Irene and said, “What did we do to Mother Nature to come through here like this.” There are still four months to go, including September, the busiest month of the hurricane season. The Gulf Coast expected a soaking this weekend from Tropical Storm Lee and forecasters were watching Hurricane Katia slogging west in the Atlantic. The insurance company Munich Re calculated that in the first six months of the year there have been 98 natural disasters in the United States, about double the average of the 1990s. Even before Irene, the Federal Emergency Management Agency was on pace to obliterate the record for declared disasters issued by state, reflecting both the geographic breadth and frequency of America’s problem-plagued year. “If you weren’t in a drought, you were drowning is what it came down to,” Masters said. Add to that, oppressive and unrelenting heat. Tens of thousands of daily weather records have been broken or tied and nearly 1,000 all-time records set, with most of them heat or rain related. “I think this year has really been extraordinary in terms of natural catastrophes,” said Andreas Schrast, head of catastrophic perils for Swiss Re, another big insurer. One of the most noticeable and troubling weather extremes was the record-high nighttime temperatures, said Tom Karl, director of NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center. That shows that the country wasn’t cooling off at all at night, which both the human body and crops need. “These events are abnormal,” Karl said. “But it’s part of an ongoing trend we’ve seen since 1980.” –Taiwan News

“We were able to walk right into the river bed and stand among the 60-foot icebergs that are grounded now,” said Diana Thayer of Atlin, B.C., who came across the phenomenon while hiking near the Llewellyn Glacier along the Sloko Inlet trail in late August.

“It just seemed the plug had been pulled on a bathtub.”

It most definitely is. The Gulf stream and the cosmic rays are really angry. And being Jewish, i should know!

How dare anyone not allow the rapture to come through Jerusalem’s gates! There are people here who are waiting to watch the great apocalypse movie, and have even bought their tickets. Does anyone on this site actually know a Jewish person, i wonder?

I’m tired of working this hard says he: what a rare choice of words.

If only I could tell Jeff face to face that he hasn’t seen the worst of it – apparently he doesn’t yet realize that there’s a battle being fought between good and evil.

  6. God in His word said that He would bless those who obey Him, by giving them rain in its season. He said He would punish those who rebel against Him, by bringing drought and famine upon them. While most of the Bible’s prophecies regarding “natural” disasters are concerned with the modern scattered tribes of Israel, weather patterns affect the whole world. All nations are breaking God’s laws, which means the entire world is in rebellion against God and will suffer the consequences:

“He shall judge the world in righteousness and He shall administer judgment for the peoples in righteousness.… Put them in fear, O Lord, that the nations may know themselves to be but men” (Psalm 9:8, 20).

Jesus Christ predicted that natural disasters would be one of the signs ‘announcing His return’ to this earth: “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places” (Matthew 24:7).

I assure you [everyone] He’s coming and soon !

More than 12 million African slaves were brought in from Africa in the most inhumane and brutal conditions to work in America
USA and its European allies fashions itself as champions of humanrights whereas their foreign policies are one of plundering resource rich nations with doubios claims of restoring democratic rule after committing genocide and destroying the entire infrastructure of that country.
So the US is paying the price by KARMIC law.

    • These disasters will affect everyone and the devastation will be unequivocal across the face of the planet. This is what perhaps worry me most of all is that humans will start blaming each other for what’s going wrong rather than sharing love/healing and preparing spirit and heart for that change. Once this downward spiral starts; it will pave the way for future genocides to exorcise the curse. Warning given…

I totally agree with you. People should avoid blaming each other now for past actions of our for-fathers whom from all indication were possessed by the spirit of the enemy of God..
What matters is how we all on earth can be be saved right now. For sure our salvation lies in the hand of God the Atom of life; however our ability to receive that salvation from him will depend on our present actions and state of mind. I will recommend that every one of us Welcome Almighty God into their lives, truly Repent, Learn to Forgive and practice Love for this is the Key to the KINGDOM OF GOD / SALVATION
Remain Blessed in the Name of our Lord JESUS CHRIST..

So name me a town, city, county, state or a Nation without Sin. You cannot, I am a Native American Indian (mom’s side) and yet I don’t blame anyone for their sins against us, it is NOT up to me nor anyone else to judge, only our God has that right. Now to throw you for a loop I am also a German/Jew on my dad’s side, now being someone from a race on both sides that has been “plundered raped murdered” I still don’t judge anyone, only God has that right! It is NOT up to you nor me or anyone to Judge any race nor people, town, city, country or state or nation. You have your right to an opinion but make it clear to everyone that it is only your opinion. Everyone’s opinions is always open to discussion, that is what makes us unique, everyone has their own opinion.

I’d just like to point out that Karma is at least a century too late to really make the real perpetrators pay for these crimes. It would only be punishing innocent people who had nothing to do with those atrocities. On top of that, Karma would be punishing the descendants of the victims of slavery and the Native American genocide.

  10. Are we bold enough to admit that God is behind these events by either allowing it, or causing it, or permitting it to happen? Wake up, wake up oh America and listen to the voice of the Lord God Almighty and choose this day whom you will serve for your destiny is at hand.

Alvin, i’ve heard on more than one occasion from somebody that all these disasters are nothing out of the ordinary. He says that he’s seen major disasters in the past but the end never came and we’re still here. He said the earthquake activity remains normal. I want to believe him but it’s hard to believe though. What do you think? This gentleman’s in his forties. I’m not sure how long you’ve been around, but have you seen what we’re seeing now years ago?

Praising Him because He deserves it. He is surely still in control. I don’t understand it all but I do take Him at his word. My trust is in Him.
Alvin, you are right. This is not the time for passing blame around. We are going to have enough to handle (just dealing with in the present), without dwelling on the past. Why fight over something that was committed by people before we were even born and none of us would consider doing? We cannot go back and change the past, but can do things to make the present better for those we come into contact with.
It’s the time to be sure we are prepared spiritually for what time we have left on this earth, whether 1 minute or 1 decade. Unless God intervenes, it appears none of us are going to be immune from the changes already taking place or the much worse ones to come.
May God bless and keep you in the times ahead and for all eternity.

I think that, I changed that, I believe that man is tampering with the weather. As far back as the 60’s. The Cubans accused the Americans of tampering with the the clouds so that no rain would fall on their crops. I’ve read about that how currently the US military and others are working research projects to use weather as a weapon or as force multiplier.
Now, I believe the thesis statement of this site and its purpose.
A good question is? Is man’s tampering with the weather causing an acceleration in current weather events and leading to some some extreme results? Because, if that is so, then this tampering could lead to a huge disaster. Some may scoff that this post, but when a former Secy of Defense makes a public statement in regard to weather warfare, you have to consider that. And when you look at man’s tampering with nature, such as the killer bee issue, it makes a strong point of discussion.
But, that does not take away from what is happening naturally.

I believe somebody has been busy.
      Just a thought.
