Super moon returns to night skies on May 5, 2012

May 1, 2012SPACE Skywatchers take note: The biggest full moon of the year is due to arrive this weekend. The moon will officially become full Saturday (May 5) at 11:35 p.m. EDT. And because this month’s full moon coincides with the moon’s perigee — its closest approach to Earth — it will also be the year’s biggest. The moon will swing in 221,802 miles (356,955 kilometers) from our planet, offering skywatchers a spectacular view of an extra-big, extra-bright moon, nicknamed a super moon. And not only does the moon’s perigee coincide with full moon this month, but this perigee will be the nearest to Earth of any this year, as the distance of the moon’s close approach varies by about 3 percent, according to meteorologist Joe Rao,’s skywatching columnist. This happens because the moon’s orbit is not perfectly circular. This month’s full moon is due to be about 16 percent brighter than average. In contrast, later this year on Nov. 28, the full moon will coincide with apogee, the moon’s farthest approach, offering a particularly small and dim full moon. Though the unusual appearance of this month’s full moon may be surprising to some, there’s no reason for alarm, scientists warn. The slight distance difference isn’t enough to cause any earthquakes or extreme tidal effects, experts say. However, the normal tides around the world will be particularly high and low. At perigee, the moon will exert about 42 percent more tidal force than it will during its next apogee two weeks later, Rao said. The last supermoon occurred in March 2011. –SPACE

  1. Adama says:

The supermoon last year caused the Japan earthquake. Expect another earthquake this weekend too. It will be the southern San Andreas fault, which has not had a big earthquake in over 150 years…this one will be a 8+, and/or the cascadia fault line off t coast of northern California. When the cascadia fault line erupts, which it has not in several hundred years & is way over due…the destruction will be biblical….Seattle & many other cities will be destroyed

  2. Rob says:

Yeah, don’t worry folks! Just ignore the reams of data showing a definite corralation to quake increases & forget all about the upcoming planetary alignments, they have to Earthly impact either. It’s all good, go back to watching The Voice & leave the thinking to us!

  3. Melanie Pelton says:

    Right, March 2011…Fukushima

  4. Franky says:

Later this year all the planets are supposed to line up . I was wondering if the planets lined up will cause a chain of gravitational pull that could tear are world apart? It would explain why major catastrophes happen every 13 thousand years or so?

    • I

That’s news to me. Richard Noone predicted a similar event would occurr on May 5, 2000 during a planetary alignment, including a pole-shift and nothing happened. Distance determines gravitational effect, not linear aligments. In astrophysics, this is known as SOI. In other words, if 5 people stood in a linear line and the first one hit you- will it hurt more because 4 people are aligned behind him?

  5. Mikey says:

“The last supermoon occurred in March 2011″…..well the way things are going at the moment that doesn’t bode very well for us does it ! (March 2011)…..I bet my bottom dollar something happens this weekend.

    • TexasRedNeck says:

“Mikey”, I’ll be only too happy to hold your wallet for you until May 6th. if that will make you feel any better about this.
Alvin, I remember the nay sayers that predicted “doom & gloom” would occur on May 5th. 2000. I made the same offer of holding onto wallets then also, but I did’nt have any takers then either.

  6. gabelgirl says:

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t there a theory that a full moon causes earthquakes? And if so, is there any sites that I could look at that have full moons and earthquakes charted? I’m sort of new at this stuff.

    • Gabelgirl, you can start here:

The moon’s gravitational effect on the Earth is seen in tidal bulge around the equator and in tides in the oceans but even more importantly is the Earth’s gravitational effect on the moon. If there is seismicity or minor tremors from the interaction; it’s going to occurr on the moon as opposed to the Earth because the Earth’s influence is greater.

      • son of man says:

Hi Alvin, In NZ a fellow by the name of Ken Ring sucessfully predicted weather events and earthquakes including the large Christchurch earthquake in September 2010 using the moons orbit/gravitional pull etc. He got a lot of news coverage….became a household name…’The Moon Man’! Although on closer inspection in turned out that he had made 200 predictions of earthquakes in 2010, using his moon-theory. Making 200 predictions out of a possible 365 days of the year and getting a couple of events right = Moon man…..NOT a guru!!! Peace Always.

    • If you are new in this stuff, you should watch this:

I think, this is the best vid ever about all the problems in the world on the moment!!

      Be safe

  7. radiogirl says:

As of has offered me little comfort.

  8. James says:

“there’s no reason for alarm, scientists warn. ”
but if the last supermoon occurred in March 2011 a few words come to mind ….

    • The super moon was on March 19, 2011. The Honshu earthquake occurred on March 11, 2011. There was no connection.

      • Dennis E. says:

Alvin, I have one. In 2010, Japan made a series of condemnations against Israel for new construction of 1600 housing units. On March 10th 2010, The statement by The Goverment of Japan deplores the building of Jewish homes in East Jerusalem and to the 112 units to be built in west bank after indirect talks with the palestians and isreal that prejudges the final status of Jerusalem and the territories in the pre-1967 borders.
Japan demands that the plans should not be implemented!
This was the last statement before the earthquake.
So, on March 11th 2011, japan has the 9.0, is moved about 63 feet. Remember Egypt at the Red Sea.
        Just a thought………….

    • Eddie Walling says:

I Believe the san andreas fault will rupture durning this super moon on may 5th!!

  9. Marshallrn says:

Beware….. Super moon in May 5 2012…… Major earthquake going to happen like last year on April 28th 2012. Wait something’s wrong with that statement. Lol thanks Alvin! 2011 march (11) earthquake 8.9…… 2011 march (19) super moon. The only corilation if any would be that the super moon globaly slowed the waves from the tsunami that occurred over a week before.

  10. yves says:

check closely full moon plus solar flare ariving the 5 of may.. gues are open….

  11. yves says:

if there is one eartquake it will be a very good one

  12. Joseph t. Repas says:

I think that we should remember that the moon and sun have an effect on fluids, not nearly so much with solids so if anything perhaps the magma near the Earth’s crust could be pulled about and that could possibly cause volcanoes that are already on the verge of popping their tops to finally let loose some and maybe that super hot plasma melt a rift on a fault line or two somewhere causing a bang as the rocks close that gap but I would not neccessarily expect anything big to happen. We all tend to oversimplify God’s intricate creation with even numbered years and perfect alignments etc. but there is so much more involved than meets the eye. Most of which we don’t know.

  13. suz says:

Here is a website that shows planetary alignment for any year –
I read that the closest the planets came to alignment was somewhere around 500 BC and may come close again in the late 29th century. Not in our lifetime. It’s an interesting subject for sure!

  14. Victoria says:

Hey, have been following this site for a couple of years now and it never ceases to amaze me how people comment but seem to not read the other posts! It’s been stated a couple of times that the march 2011 earthquake happened on the 11th and the super moon on the 19th so no correlation whatsoever!! Btw seriously love this site, really great work 🙂

  15. nixArt says:

another interesting astronomical events for 2012:
Annular solar eclipse 2012 May 20, visible from US:
Venus will be visible from earth when it passes the sun – it occures 2 times per century, for now in 2004 and 2012 June 5/6:

  16. Deesolution says:

There is a full moon every 28 days..if the full moon caused Fukashima, then we should be having tsunamis and all sorts at a rate of knots..I’m sure Planet earth will be fine..nothing to be afraid of at all..
    I loathe scaremongering..

  17. arsh says:

dont worry God knows wat to do…and btw human species hv done more disasters than nature

  18. TexasRedNeck says:

Just go outside, look up at the moon and enjoy another of God’s Creations.

  19. John Kilby says:

Isn’t the sun supposed to flip poles this year sometime?

  20. Irene C says:

I think that with this Super moon, I’ll do what I did last year – take some pictures. That is if it doesn’t rain.

Once again, thank you for this site, Alvin. There’s a big difference between watching earth changes and being prepared, from getting caught up with conspiracy theories and doom and gloom. It’s very easy to get caught up in unrealistic and unscientific ideas and conspiracies. I’ve done it myself. That’s why I love this site so much. Although many may consider all of this doom and gloom, I call it knowledge. If I’m going down, I want to know what hit me.

  21. Rob says:

Good grief! Not another link to the invisible “PlanetX” that “meandered through our solar system” until(depending on who you ask), some time between 2003 & 2011, it threw on the brakes, took up orbit on the oposite side of the Sun from us, where it alternates between peeking out one side of the Sun or the other(so the “Faithful Awake Ones” can see it on SOHO, but only when the “PlanetX deletion Software” that “EVERYONE knows NASA is using, runs slow enough for a few lucky ducks to snap a picture) & flipping it’s 30-70 million mile long tail at Earth to remind us who’s boss. *rolls eyes* Not THAT rediculous “Theory” again? You guys & gals DO realize that this “wending” “meandering but never waivering in it’s goal of orbiting the Sun” was supposed to destroy Earth back in 2003, this according to “Go kill your pets while I channel the Zeta’s to find out what’s going to happen next” Nancy, right?

  22. Sue says:

John Kilby said, ‘Isn’t the sun supposed to flip poles this year sometime?’ As Alvin said, sometime before the end of this solar cycle next year the polarities are supposed to change, but I read recently that it is happening this year…one year early and for an unknown reason the north poles are ahead of the south poles which is an unusual event. What it means…only God may truly know. Scientists seemed to be perplexed frequently this year, and that too is just as God intended it. Interesting time like no other and the best is yet to come. God bless us one and all.

  23. Jerry says:

There will be some amazing things happening that day, people all around the world…. will celebrate their birthdays:) Take some pictures, have some fun, get a Moon burn;)

    • Joseph t. Repas says:

…YES! and also for our Mexican friends..Cinco de Mayo ! Got lime?

    • Sreela Kolandai says:

Tomorrow wil be a great day, it’s my Birthday, day wil be filled with sunshine, laughter, love, peace, good wishes. Lets celebrate God’s creation. Enjoy your weekend everybody!!

  24. Emanni says:

Some more events during the month of May & June 2012

    Partial Solar Eclipse (May 21)

    Shavou’ot / Pentecost (May 27)

Partial Lunar Eclipse (blood moon – June 4)

Rare Transit of Venus (June 5 – June 6)

  25. KIMMIE says:

It doesn’t matter what MAN says, GOD IS IN FULL CONTROL!

  26. TexasRedNeck says:

Alvin here’s a link that I believe your readers would be interested in looking at. “And there will be SIGNS in the Heavens”. All for the glory of God.

    • northern treck says:

this caught my attention. although one thing that I always understood is – we will not know the hour or the day of Jesus’s return and there will be signs and seasons for which people should prepare… but interesting read.

I remember one reaccuring dream I had, of all people looking and facing the moon

  27. suz says:

I call it knowledge on this site as well. I don’t see it as doom and gloom. Alvin’s posts have let me to research different topics and I am so much more informed now that I was, and I’m still learning.

  28. kristoffer94 says:

Some theories says that the Supermoon could trigger natural disasters, but what about the last year’s supermoon? The Japan 9.0 magnitude earthquake happened 1 week before the supermoon of 2011, so can it possible happen in the coming days? Maybe or maybe not

  29. doomed? not doomed? either way i’m sure it will be a pretty sight as long as its not cloudy. but then if there is an earth quake on saturday it will probably be me falling over on cinco de mayo

  30. Sally says:

When the Monks of Tibet have knowledge of pending disasters, the order of the day is: sit quietly and recite mantras by youself and is extremely powerful in groups. The purpose of the mantra is to quell radical energy in our minds and send kindness and compassion to all beings on Earth & to the entire Universe. This is considered a proactive approach. Peace, love & harmony, Sally

  31. gabriel says:

Planetary alignments and astronomical events occur all the time. Nothing lasts forever, and the universe is constantly changing. It’s quite possible there will be a major earth change during this event. It’s also quite possible that you will be hiding in an underground shelter for nothing. The only thing more frightening than death is not living. Enjoy what God has given you and appreciate what you do have. There will be many changes coming this year, and there is nothing anyone can do to change that, but we can change our reactions to it. Accept the life you have been given. Go live your life and enjoy it! Life is too short to be spending it worrying about what you cannot change. God will take care of the rest.

  32. Emanni says:

    Amazing photos of God’s creation

    ‘Supermoon’ lights up the sky
