Double earthquakes: 5.3 off the coast of Oregon and 6.1 strikes near Bali, Indonesia

October 13, 2011OREGON Full Moon Quakes: A strong 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Oregon along the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate and shallow magma plume at a depth of 10 km. Just this year, geologists discovered that a massive underwater volcanic eruption had occurred off the coast of Oregon sometime in late 2010. The epicenter of today’s earthquake was 233 km (144 miles) W of Coos Bay, Oregon and 365 km (226 miles) WSW of Salem, Oregon. The Juan de Fuca plate is part of the troubled Cascadian Fault system which extends up the northwest coastline of the U.S. and Canada. Geologists have said the region is long overdue for a major earthquake in the 9.0 magnitude range. Today’s strong earthquake should come as a wake-up call to the growing dangers of Earth’s heightened seismic activity and rising pressures at its magmatic hotspots like the Canary Islands, Etna and Iceland. The Oregon earthquake (which was downgraded from a 5.9 by the USGS ) was preceded by a 6.1 magnitude offshore earthquake that struck near Bali, Indonesia- another country of growing seismic and volcanic unrest. Indonesia currently has 6 volcanoes on very high alert. The Extinction Protocol
Bali Indonesia: A powerful earthquake has jolted Indonesia’s popular resort island of Bali, causing widespread panic and injuring at least 50 people, many with broken bones and head injuries. Ceilings caved in at some schools and offices on Thursday, while several ancient Hindu temples along the coast were damaged, with stones tumbling to the ground and their walls crumbling. The police headquarters in Denpasar, where a 14-year-old Australian boy and a number of other Australians are being detained, was evacuated after the earthquake, which struck at 11.16am local time on Thursday (1416 AEDT). A small aftershock more than four hours after the main quake also caused residents to flee buildings, although no further damage was apparent. The US Geological Survey said the 6.1-magnitude quake was centered 100 kilometers southwest of the island, famous for its resorts and spectacular surfing beaches. It hit 35km beneath the ocean floor. Although not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, the quake was felt on neighboring Java and Lombok islands. Strong shaking was felt for several minutes in the main tourist district of Kuta, said Endro Tjahjono from the Bali office of Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. “There was panic, everyone ran out of the buildings. When we returned to our office building, we saw some cracks on the wall and plaster had come off the walls,” he told Agence France-Presse. –Nine MSN

The 6.0-magnitude quake, which struck at 11.16am local time on Thursday (1416 AEDT), caused panic in tourist areas as people fled from their homes and hotels.

At least 50 people have been hurt, many with cuts, broken bones and head wounds, hospital spokesman Wayan Sudanti said.*

    Hi Alvin,
Just last night I had a dream that Indonesia/Java sunk into the ocean and 1.3 million people died.

    • We will see an unimagiable loss of life and changes to the islands in the Pacific. Your dream, no doubt, portends these events. As I have said repeatedly, and so say I again, when 1 million people pass from the Earth is one day- sadly, only then, will the seriousness of this crisis be understood. It is my hope and prayer that as many as possible can move out of harm’s way before lives are threatened and this crisis becomes critical.

  3. Wow, I was not aware that there was a shallow magma plume with this. That gives me a very uneasy feeling. Feels like the entire Ring of Fire is ready to explode.

And I live in Portland…lovely. Whatever happens is my destiny. I worry for others more than myself. There are so many that are not “awake” – that is disturbing. I love this Earth and trust that what will happen is meant to happen and I also know that there is a higher power that has our best interest at heart. Our life on Earth is a school and we have much to learn. We cannot continue to live the way we are and abuse eachother and this Earth without paying the concequences.. Peace and love to all.

A 4.3 reported in Baja California today also. This seismic activity is really escalating quickly and persistently. I pray that people will take note and start to make their peace with God and their fellow man – because our time gets shorter with each event.
Alvin, you’ve warned us about these potential catastrophes and I thank God for your willingness to keep others informed about these impending disastrous losses.

It IS ready to explode ! I think the earth has had enough and is in revolt for the weight of evil it has been made to bear.

i know this is off subject, but is anyone aware of tectonic activity in the great lakes area? lake huron to be specific. i live on lake huron and recently the water level has been lower than normal. i mean freakishly lower…at the rate of 1-2 feet/day. i have been measuring it. as of a few days ago it was 36ft (at the shore) lower than its normal level by the dock i have been using as a marker. i noticed it about a month ago.

the reason i ask about activity is because a few nights ago, around midnight, we were standing down there and we heard a huge wave (the lake was like glass it was so still). within a few minutes the wave hit the shore and surged the water level up at least five or six feet higher with repeated short waves following and then it retreated again. it wasn’t a wake from a ship, it wasn’t even a wake. just one wave/ripple that carried across the lake until it hit the shore.

another time, a month or so ago, i was standing on the sandbar in mid-calf-deep water and all of a sudden the sandbar was exposed. my children were at least ten feet further out in the lake so i called them in and we stood there staring at the exposed sandbar (i’ve never seen this before). about 2-3 minutes later the water came rushing back so fast it almost knocked me on my bum! i have lived here my whole life and never seen the lake act like this. its like we are getting mini-tsunamis?!

    • Not familar with the seismicity in the region Cristee on the dates in question but it goes without saying that we just came off a full moon and the Great Lakes are above sea-level. You can always check with the state agency to see if there are any abnormalities going on with the lake or if any sesimic activity is being reported.

Last night, before the Oregon and Bali earthquakes, I noticed how little earthquake activity there was world wide. Then Oregon and Bali earthquakes happened. It seems to me, like the whole world is ready to blow.

Just had a couple at Rainier. Are those very significant Alvin?

    Like

    • I think they were near Rainer…but if they are not of a volcanic nature, my second guess would be Cascadia is showing more unrest especially after the 5.3 off the coast of Oregon. I posted them on the Twitter feed…I’ll keep an eye on them.

      Thanks

Is it just me, but it seems that when a few things go wrong from our normal routine, people just freak out! What if these were the “big ones” and the result was that there was no tidal waves? The bali quake in 2004 happened to hit the fault in the perfect way as to create a powerful tidal wave than spanned the globe. That is not as common as you think. I think it is bad timing and circumstance. When I read these comments, you would think that we are living in caves and just came out and discovered the moon for the first time.
