Azores quake
April 30, 2013AZORES An earthquake of magnitude 6 struck in the Atlantic Ocean 38 miles east of Ponta Delgada in Portugal’s Azores archipelago on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, but local authorities reported no immediate damage. The USGS downgraded the earthquake to 5.9 magnitude. The quake was at a depth of 9.4 miles, the survey said. “The quake was felt here, but it was not strong enough to do any serious damage on the island. We have not received any requests for help,” a duty officer at the Ponta Delgada fire brigade told Reuters. –Reuters

Alvin, it now looks like a new more active seismic cycle has begun earlier today after a lull for the last few days or so. We can now expect to see quite a few more MAJOR and GREAT earthquakes over the next 2-3 weeks according to my observations. What are your thoughts on this?

I also noticed the lull in seismic activity and felt like it was the calm before the storm. There’s a lot of talk about escalating activity in a variety of subjects, from warfare to weather. 2013 has been fairly calm, so far, but I think it’s time to buckle our seatbelts.

I often wonder just how many people on the east coast of the US know about Ponta Delgada and the threat it poses to their future. If the island loses it’s western flank (which it will some time in the future), a tidal wave of unimaginable magnitude shall head their way and the only place safe will be several hundred miles inland.

Thank you Alvin and Wayne. – I’m on the same page. This event surprised me along with a few other seismic events that occurred last night. I was not able to absorb the activity but it seems that there’s a whole new ball game around the corner.

Great Lisbon Quake May Have a Sequel, Study Says. It was one of the greatest natural disasters in European history. The 8.7 earthquake that struck Portugal in 1755 killed at least 60,000 people, and triggered tsunamis (giant waves) that wrecked seaports in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.
The Portuguese leading experts in earthquakes that Portugal may be, at any time, an earthquake and a tsunami similar to what we saw in Japan and that will kill tens of thousands of people

(The estimated magnitude of 8.7 makes the 1755 earthquake 20 times stronger than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

It generated a 5- to 10-meter-high (16- to 33-foot-high) tsunami wave, which swept across the coasts of Spain, southern Portugal and Morocco, devastating most of the ports and dragging people and debris out to sea.

Shaking was felt in France, Italy, and North Africa. The quake was reported to have lasted for as long as ten minutes.

The disaster was a setback to a powerful trading nation—Lisbon may have been the richest city in Europe at the time—and caused an important shift in the balance of power of the era.
