Yellowstone volcano 2.5 times larger than previously thought

March 2014 GEOLOGYThe supervolcano beneath the surface of Yellowstone National Park is 2.5 times larger than previously believed according to a study from the University of Utah. The supervolcano is part of what is known as a caldera, an underground volcano forming a shape like a cauldron. More accurate details about the caldera were discovered by measuring the seismic waves of the underground magma which is anywhere from 3 to 9 miles beneath the surface of the earth. The length of the caldera is 88.5 km (~50 miles) with a width of 29 km (~18 miles). The lead author of the study, Jamie Farrell, claims the quantity of lava in the supervolcano is enough to give rise to what would be among the top three eruptions over the past 2.1 million years. Sulfur entering the upper atmosphere would turn to sulfur dioxide, circle the globe and drop temperatures. Worldwide famine would likely ensue. So just how spectacular would the eruption be? For a comparison, let’s go back to the year 1980 when the United States Geological Survey (USGS) refused to take no for an answer any compelled the city of Mount St. Helens to close off access to the nearby volcanic mountain of the same name and evacuate the town. The volcano erupted with devastating effect which would have killed thousands of residents. Farrell is the lead author of a study presented at the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco in December that determined the magma chamber beneath the Yellowstone caldera is 88 km long and 29 km wide, reaching depths up to 15 km. That makes it the largest imaged magma reservoir in the world. But is an eruption in the cards? No one really knows. “There may not be, but there probably will be. Of course, we don’t know when,” Farrell said. –Ecanadanow

Is there any correlation between the number of quakes at Yellowstone and sunspot activity?

We already knew this, I love your reports, but please share some good news too.

  3. Ray Hajduga says:

We can run ,but, we can’t hide. That is a frightening thought if that were to erupt.

  4. Ray Of Strength says:

Unfortunately Terri, we live in a society where negative events make good news…positive events do not make for good news…

This thing is going to erupt one day in the future and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. It doesn’t need a trigger, it will erupt due to its sheer massive size. However, no one knows when. It could blow today or in 10,000 years. Some say it’s “overdue”. Well, nature is in ultimate control of things and we’re just along for the ride. Humans aren’t as special as they believe themselves to be. There will be a time when we’re blown out of existence due to our own hand or by forces we can scarcely comprehend. (At least, we think we understand them.)

I believe the title ‘The Extinction Protocol’ would be a clear indication of the content of this blog. The author is simply concisely placing factual, worldly, earth phenomenon in one place which I greatly appreciate. We can’t alter natural major catastrophes, so I find it best to enjoy your present moments in life and not succumb to worrying about non changeable matters and perhaps even marvel at the power of our world.

  7. Thomas E. Strongin Sr says:

If Yellowstone Caldera ever erupts the blast would probably take out most of the NW States and and cover most of the world with volcanic ash. Coupled with the Sulfur saturation of the upper atmosphere, we would experience another ice age which most of mankind will be unable to survive due to the lack of crops to produce the things we need to survive. Not a pretty picture, mother nature still rules!!

Have you seen any models showing N/W states? Everything I have seen projects a S/W path of destruction? Not that anyone really knows what it will d, it’s all based on theory anyways.

I only hope and my daughters are visiting old dad here in Hawaii when this critter decides to blow its head gasket…you listening Margie and Cynthia?

  9. Dennis E. says:

Alvin, there are floating rumors on the internet that USGS is hiding reports that some believe that
yellowstone is in an early stage of some kind of eruption?

I wonder if the earthquakes off the coast of California would effect the caldera?

So, like, whoa, Dudes, does this means that, like, if it pops, it extinctifies EVERYTHING 2.5 times? So that’s, like, a new-and-improved extenction-level-event! BOSS! Oh, wait, no, “activate thinker before engaging talker” cuz that came out wrong. . . .
