Death-toll from European deep freeze hits 540 as Danube freezes over

February 10, 2012 – GERMANYThick ice closed vast swathes of the Danube on Thursday, crippling shipping on Europe’s busiest waterway, as the death toll from bitter cold across the continent rose to at least 540. As it has every day for nearly two weeks, the brutal cold claimed lives in several countries and killed dozens more in weather-related accidents. The 2,860-kilometre (1,780-mile) Danube, which flows through 10 countries and is vital for transport, power, irrigation, industry and fishing, was wholly or partially blocked from Austria to its mouth on the Black Sea. Navigation was impossible or restricted in Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria, as ice covered the river or formed dangerous floes in shipping lanes. An official from the Serbian economy ministry said the commercial repercussions “could be very bad,” while infrastructure ministry official Pavle Galico said shipping would not resume for 10 days. Bulgarian authorities, who have banned all navigation on the river, reported 224 vessels stuck in ports, and Ukrainian rescuers in Croatia reached three crew members on a ship trapped in the ice since Friday. Temperatures in Bulgaria dropped to a new record low Thursday of minus 28.6 degrees Celsius (minus 19.5 Fahrenheit) in the northwestern town of Vidin. The country has halted all power exports due to the cold snap. So far, 28 people have been killed in Bulgaria as a result of the weather, including eight who drowned when the icy waters of a small dam swept through their village of Biser in the southeast. Serbian railways, meanwhile, said the famed Balkan Express train that runs from Belgrade to Istanbul would only go as far as Sofia for now because of the flooding in Bulgaria. –Yahoo News

    Gullible warming strikes again. LOL!

Seriously, this would seem to be the worst winter in over two decades in Europe. Extreme weather on display yet again.

Seriously, I’m sitting on my balcony in the middle of February in my Teeshirt. No snow, nothing. Keep thinking happy thoughts. Your children will thank you for ignoring that something is wrong. It may not be AGW but something is certainly out of whack.

The toll is over 540 now. Those poor people. But it will get to the USA, something will. Perhaps God is saving the best for last? Or is it the worst for last?

My father grew up in Yugoslavia, before the communist take-over. He would tell me stories about the Danube freezing over and the wolves crossing the ice and coming into the city. I wonder if the same thing is happening now.

  6. “The jet stream, which circulates the globe mostly west-to-east azimuthally with some meanders , usually provides a “barrier” that contains the cold winter Arctic weather near the north pole. However, the jet stream sometimes destabilizes, so that the barrier becomes “broken” and thus no longer contains the cold Arctic weather. Now, with global warming, the Arctic has been heating up, with Arctic sea ice melting at an unprecedented rate. The causal connection proposed is that this additional Arctic heat contributes to the destabilization of the jet stream so that the barrier breaks more than it would under natural variation.”
So in future we will have this kind of winters in Europe. It is like you open a fridge door, the cold air gets out, in the fridge it is getting warmer, and the surrounding colder.

    • The likely consequence, as I said before, of the magnetic north pole racing toward Siberia and likely dragging the jetstream down further from the top of the globe with it.

        Alvin,
What are the consequences of the coming magnetic pole shift? They said the last one took place 700,000 years ago. What could this do to us? NASA says the magnetic poles reverse all the time with no effect on the earth.

If it happened, 700,000 years ago, how would they possibly know what happens. Science can not even figure out how the Pyramids, or Baalbek were built a few thousand years ago, so how can they possibly know what happened 700,000 years ago. In other words, if they can’t see the road 500 meters if front of them, how can tell you what’s around the bend? “He that is unfaithful in that which is least; is unfaithful also in that which is much.” Luke 16:10

Who does God committ the key to the storehouse of knowledge to in this world, the very ones who blaspheme His name?

The records are crappy for 1,000 years ago. The cycle may occur much more frequently, which seems to have been hidden thru out history to protect the innocent, whoever they are.

Here where I live in Norway, on the westcoast of Oslofjorden, by Norways oldest city, it used to be the place in Norway with most sunny days, and it used to be pretty windstill in the 90’s and before, now the wind almost always blows, and it is raining almost every day of the summer the last 5-6 years at least. The threes are dying because of too much water. But this winter is a lot warmer than last year and the year before that, now it is between 0 degrees C and -10 degrees C, last year we had around -15 to – 20. But other places in Norway the low temprature is breaking records. Whem my mom was little they could go iceskating on Oslofjorden, but that has not been possible for at least 30-40 years probably.

Wasn’t too fit last night. Woke up this morning and as soon as my feet hit the floor, I was shaking with cold and the central heating was on. The Lord had healed my body as soon as I asked Him last night. Today, I wondered why I was still so cold! My weather gizmo soon told me, it was minus 13 C outside! It’s never been that cold before as far as I can remember!
