Burnt by the Sun: high proton density solar winds sear planet’s magnetosphere

WAITING FOR IMPACT: The CME from Tuesday’s magnificent flare still hasn’t reached Earth. NOAA forecasters haven’t given up, though. They estimate a 20% to 30% chance that the cloud may yet deliver a glancing blow to our planet’s magnetic field and spark geomagnetic storms during the next 24 hours. High latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras. –Space Weather
The magnetosphere is holding but it is being seared by the very-dense solar winds emanting from the solar prominence that erupted on the Sun on Tuesday. The storm is only grazing the Earth’s magnetosphere and the planet was spared a full frontal assault from the solar eruption but it is, nonetheless, still causing quite a stir. Proton density counts in the solar wind stream have been rising dramatically over the last 36 hours.

    Maybe related?
They say the computer systems outage affected its website and airport computer systems around the country

Feeling it here in Texas…..saving up the daily activity for the evening because the heat just makes you sick being out in it during the day.

TEXAS is a huge land mass, as we all know, where in Texas are you located (directional) matters, that gulf coast is humid. If you’re not a life long Texan it is hard to get use to the weather. Air conditioners allow tourists and residents manage. Hydrate often.

Nothing special. Wind from coronal hole last week was more intensive.

  5. There was a big thunderstorm in Canada two days ago and more then 65,000 Hydro One customers are still without power after storm. Was this storm a result of the suns activity?

Alvin, this is probably not the best place to post this. I am hoping you may have so helpful information on the following. As a storm was approaching this evening, the cloud appeared to be curved on the outer edge. But the outer edge of the cloud was preceded by light. The cloud was kind of low and it was almost as if someone had outlined the cloud with a white marker. I’ve tried to find a picture on the internet and cannot find one like it. The closet example would be the picture on this site except it was not smoothe on the edges.
At first I could not believe my eyes, it was very sureal. Later I talked with a neighbor that also saw it. He said when he saw it, hehad called his wife out to look at it and they were amazed too. Any thoughts. I was wondering if it might be related to the solar flares.
Thanks for you time and input.

    • No problem Jenn. Just trying to get a feel for what you’re describing. Did it look anything like the following? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenticular_cloud

Thanks Alvin for your response. The lenticular cloud does look similar (as far as the shape of perimeter). But the one in our area was relatively low in the sky, was moving with the storm cloud, and appeared to be only one layer. Nearly the entire view of sky for me was cloudy at the time unlike the many pictures I’ve viewed online. I took a picture with my cell phone, but it was not a good one at all. My neighbor also took one with his phone. When I see him later, if his came out clear I will post it.
God bless and just want to say you posts and responses, as well as many of others also posting (on this site and EP FB site get more and more interesting daily.

I guess not much of a difference in daylight – however I felt the change of our climate in the air over 15 years ago without knowing anything about climate change – hard to explain. Thank you for the info 🙂
