Massive section of ocean floor off the coast of Portugal beginning to fracture

Major geological shift for planet: NOAA/NGDC image of the Atlantic crustal age of the ocean floor. Geologists have detected the first evidence that a passive margin in the Atlantic ocean is becoming active. The team mapped the ocean floor and found it was beginning to fracture, indicating tectonic activity around the apparently passive South West Iberia plate margin.
June 18, 2013 GEOLOGY - A new subduction zone forming off the coast of Portugal heralds the beginning of a cycle that will see the Atlantic Ocean close, as continental Europe moves closer to America. Published in Geology, new research led by Monash University geologists has detected the first evidence that a passive margin in the Atlantic Ocean is becoming active. Subduction zones, such as the one beginning near Iberia, are areas where one of the tectonic plates that cover Earth’s surface dives beneath another plate into the mantle — the layer just below the crust. Lead author Dr João Duarte, from the School of Geosciences said the team mapped the ocean floor and found it was beginning to fracture, indicating tectonic activity around the apparently passive South West Iberia plate margin. “What we have detected is the very beginnings of an active margin — it’s like an embryonic subduction zone,” Dr Duarte said. “Significant earthquake activity, including the 1755 quake which devastated Lisbon, indicated that there might be convergent tectonic movement in the area. For the first time, we have been able to provide not only evidences that this is indeed the case, but also a consistent driving mechanism.” The incipient subduction in the Iberian zone could signal the start of a new phase of the Wilson Cycle — where plate movements break up supercontinents, like Pangaea, and open oceans, stabilize and then form new subduction zones which close the oceans and bring the scattered continents back together. This break-up and reformation of supercontinents has happened at least three times, over more than four billion years, on Earth. The Iberian subduction will gradually pull Iberia towards the United States over approximately 220 million years. The findings provide a unique opportunity to observe a passive margin becoming active — a process that will take around 20 million years. Even at this early phase the site will yield data that is crucial to refining the geodynamic models. “Understanding these processes will certainly provide new insights on how subduction zones may have initiated in the past and how oceans start to close,” Dr. Duarte said. –Daily Science

Amen, Alvin. One of the many things I have learned from you is how science and the Bible interrelate. We are told that using the Masoretic Hebrew text of Genesis 5 and 11, that the approximate Biblical age of the earth is 6,000 years. How amazing it is when you are able to unravel some of the mysteries of the Bible and realize that Pangea, which is considered by most Bible scholars and even scientists, occurred when? When man, who was born into sin, attempted to build a tower to heaven termed the Tower of Babel. The Lord came down and scattered man by both geographical and language barriers so the tower could not be built. And, this occurs in Genesis 11:9 and correlates perfectly with the concept of Pangea! Could it be possible, from reading in this article that God intends to rejoin the continents before He returns?…

“And every mountain and island was moved out of their places…Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.” -Revelation 6:14, 16:18 KJV, NIV

We would certainly be looking at a compressed time-scale of catastrophism, which could see the planet’s surface altered almost overnight. Continents converge and islands will collapse and be drug under the waves along oceanic trenches. Perhaps, we have never fully grasped what we have read until now…

        God bless,

Unfortunately the Masoretic text has been tampered with and is not reliable. The Septuagint or better still the Dead Sea Scrolls would be a safer bet but learning to read Hebrew will surely open one’s eyes to possible errors in some of the current translations especially the English. The Delitzsch is ok and i use it in combination with the Masoretic but hopefully will have a copy of the Septuagent. Again reading Hebrew has helped to uncover some of the mistakes or additions & subtractions made by man.

More BS from those who can only guess what is going to occur but give us these astronomical time frames that are absolutely untenable and cannot be proven by any science. There is no science that can prove anything over 5000 years accurately as carbon dating gives us results on fictional human input. This scientists may as well be sorcerers or fortune tellers as the information one would get from them would be as accurate.

Carbon dating is notoriously unreliable, I agree. But some of the more advanced isotope decay techniques–such as Uranium/Thorium-Helium or U/Th(H) dating–I think are very accurate. For one thing, repeated tests using the same samples give the same time frames with very little deviation, using these other techniques.
Thing is, they cannot be used to date organics, which is what carbon dating is used for. They are meant to be used by geologists to attempt to date strata layers.

What has surprised me is that these techniques are NOT being used by geologists to date strata. I attempted to figure out why and found that, for one thing, Geologists generally don’t have the knowledge necessary to carry out the procedure, which is extremely complex. You basically need a top-level physicist to set up and run the dating process, which is based on obscure particle physics.
The problem with that is, physicists don’t have any skin in the game in terms of the ages of various strata, etc. If a geologist sends a sample of material to be tested that came from strata thought to be 200 million years old, and the physicist runs the procedure which returns an approximate age of 2 million years, the geologist has a big problem. Either the theoretical age of 200 million years is wrong, or the age given by the dating procedure is wrong. Claiming the latter will piss off the physicist, who will take it as an insult to his knowledge of physics and his ability to utilize that knowledge in a laboratory environment. The physicist will fight tooth and nail against that accusation, and the ensuing battle would garner a lot of attention, which is the last thing you want if you’re protecting a dogma from truth.

So the accurate techniques are rarely used. Because, you know, why bother? We already know how old everything is. ಠ_ಠ

    • That whole “subduction thing” is not any sort of “assumption” but is a proven fact, derivative hypothesis that has been tested and validated, becoming recognized fact, wherein convergent plate boundaries result in the collision and subduction of one plate beneath another. We have geologic evidence of these convergent plate contacts occurring in present time, along with resultant volcanism and orogeny, and geologic evidence of these having occurred in the past, resulting in paleo mountain ranges at previous convergent boundaries in which marine sediments and marine fossils have been uplifted 1,000′s of feet in the air.

    • April 12, 2012: A leading Romanian earthquake scientist has warned that a series of massive earthquakes in the past 48 hours could be a sign that the planet is literally cracking up. Thirty-nine earthquakes have rumbled around the globe in the last two days, and Romania’s National Institute of Earth Physics expert Gheorghe Marmureanu is warning this could have serious implications. According to a report published in today’s Croatia Times: “The series started with two massive quakes in Indonesia measuring 8.6 and 8.2 on the Richter scale rapidly followed by three more only slightly smaller in Mexico within hours. There is no doubt that something is seriously wrong. There have been too many strong earthquakes,” said Marmureanu. He added: “The quakes are a surprise that cannot be easily explained by current scientific knowledge. With the Indonesian quake for example, statistically, there should be one big earthquake in this part of Asia every 500 years. However, since 2004, there were already three quakes with a magnitude of over 8, which is not normal.” –Croatian Times

Sorry but I disagree. The non-human forces that are constantly in effect on earth–inertia, gravity, heat expansion, centripetal, geo and solar magnetics–are far, far above and beyond anything the human race can achieve in terms of power. The idea that we are having some huge, destructive effect on the planet is unsubstantiated.
The reason the earth has a molten interior, and the reason the plates of the crust are in motion above it, have to do with the earth’s rotation and axial tilt to the ecliptic combined with the imbalance caused by lunar gravitational pull. That imbalance is what causes oceanic tides–how much force do you think is required to pull the entire Pacific ocean 12 yards towards the California coast?
The answer is, way, way more force than the human race can put in play.

As for drilling and fracking for oil, mining, etc., ALL of those things take place in the earth’s crust. Not only that, they all take place in the outer layers of the crust. Some oil wells can be several miles deep…but the crust is 30-50 miles thick up on the continental plates. So no matter what you think of drilling, mining, and fracking, they don’t even get down deep into the crust, much less down into the mantle, and the mantle is where the action is at in terms of earthquake and volcanic events.
You also mentioned damming rivers. Well, that has even less of a chance of being the cause of earthquakes and continental drift than mining and fracking. Rivers and dams are on the SURFACE.

In fact, the more I look at your post, the less you sound like “A Christian” and the more you sound like someone who has bought all the State-approved bullshit about how the human race is destroying the world so we should let government take care of everything. “Harmful things the corporations are doing”? “Healing the world”? “The world has been altered too much”??
When was the last time a government “healed” anything? And big corporations, in the United States and elsewhere, don’t do ANYTHING without first having government approval, which you don’t get without first spending millions in lobbying fees. You want to “heal” the planet, get rid of lobbyists, shrink the size and influence of corporations? Simple: Get rid of governmental control over the market, which will eliminate lobbying because there will be nothing to lobby for, which will in turn eliminate the need for huge amounts of start-up money to get a company going, which will result in new, small companies popping up everywhere and competing with the corporate giants, which will first whittle them down as they attempt to streamline to be able to compete, then eventually topple them completely for being too big and slow to keep up with a changing market environment.

Please, I’m serious about this. It is massive governmental control that has gotten us to this point in the first place. More government control WILL NOT FIX ANYTHING, and most likely will only exacerbate the problems we have. Every time a new problem pops up, we have gone first to government as a solution. We’ve been doing that as a society for over a hundred years, and where has it gotten us? Nowhere, All the problems government was supposed to fix have not only not been fixed, they have grown larger. Time for new solutions, beginning with a removal of the old, failed attempts…i.e., government regulations and controls.

I think its human nature to believe we’re somehow responsible for every little thing that happens on earth, truth be told where only a small part of things and earth was behaving this way a looong time before we came into the picture.

The fact that we can now report on it more accurately and openly then anytime in history doesn’t mean the earth is falling apart, just means your hearing about things now that you wouldn’t of heard about 20 years ago but that doesn’t mean they weren’t happening 20 years ago.

Now that geoscientists have found evidence of a new subduction zone of the coast of portugul and spain it would be interesting to know if there is a simular event occuring along the western shore of the atlantic. A good place to look might be the north coast of cuba, haiti and the dominican republic. It would also be interesting to follow that subduction zone and find out where it leads to. Does it go up the east coast of america or up the mississippi valley and out the saint lawrence seaway? At this point there is no need to panic but it would be wise to do a proper investigation in order to plan for future events and relocate infrastructure like nuclear power plants, cities and so on. Find the problem and fix it ahead of time that way no body gets blamed ,few get hurt or worse.
