Indonesia’s Mount Soputan erupts with 6 km ash cloud

July 3, 2011INDONESIA – A volcano on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island has erupted, spewing ash and smoke 6 kilometers into the air. Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi province erupted about 6am on Sunday (8am AEST) but people living in the sparsely populated area have not been evacuated, Iing Kusnadi, a scientist at the volcano’s monitoring post said. “The volcano erupted this morning. Besides spewing ash and dust particles, it also spewed hot gas but that’s limited to around its crater,” he said. “The recommended evacuation zone is set at a six-kilometer radius around the volcano but there’s only forest in that range. At the moment, it is still a safe distance from people but we’ll continue to monitor the activity,” he added. The nearest village is 8km away on the western side of the volcano, which towers 1783 meters over North Sulawesi province. Soputan, one of Sulawesi’s most active volcanoes, last erupted in 2008 with no fatalities recorded. State volcanologist Surono, who uses only one name, says no one was injured when Mount Soputan, located on Sulawesi island, exploded early Sunday. –MB.com

Totally soothing shows the scientific community about the seismic activity recorded in the last few days in Santorini. It is particularly weak vibration of around 2-3 degrees on the Richter scale, which does not have a centre of the volcano, but the marine area around the island.
This activity is not necessarily associated with a volcanic process, but even if that happens, the possibility of explosion of the active volcano of Santorini is strictly theoretical.
“When we talk about internal processes in volcano eruption meant not” clearly says, Professor of geology at the University of Athens, Euthymius Lekkas.
“We are talking about volcanic activity, which in fact does not appear to the naked eye. Are phenomena such as the gas flow with greater speed or a movement of magmatos in very small extent. ” So alarmed the scientific community, explains Mr Lekkas, the volcano should have serious business for many years.
“The volcano always warns. You must be an internal process, increase in temperature, changes in the local terrain, lava emission etc. Is not simply an explosion “. Reassuring as it is also the Deputy Mayor of Santorini, Marcus Kafoyros, who stresses that for years made ongoing monitoring of the volcano.
“In Santorini have the richer network instrumentation to monitor its activity. The scientists have informed me that there is absolutely no reason to worry. Anyway we know that the volcano is active and has some kind of activity and, in any case, if it is to happen in the future, we will know in advance. No volcano does not suddenly explodes.

    Soputan eruption:

The websites below show that the eruption of Soputan strongly affected the area arond the volcano:

    2. http://www.daylife.com/photo/07hfcwn4dydMS?q=soputan
The gg. translate of the first referred site suggests that personal injury also occured due to the eruption. Some specultion: the small article say that the volcanic deposit is still hot, which may be suggest that PDC also occured during the eruption.
