Parts of Ireland record coldest June in almost 40 years

 

July 2, 2011 – IRELAND – June 2011 was the coldest June since 1972 in many areas, according to Met Éireann, with mean temperatures finishing around 1.0c below normal over the country. In their just released monthly review for June, Met Éireann say that “Shannon Airport, Valentia Observatory, Roche’s Point, Dublin Airport and Belmullet all reported their coldest June since 1972. The minimum air temperature of 0.5°C at Mullingar on the 10th was the lowest recorded for June in 20 years at the station, while both Valentia Observatory and Claremorris had their lowest minimum temperatures recorded since 1991, with values of 4.6°C and 1.0°C respectively. Grass minimum temperatures recorded in the Dublin area on the 10th were the lowest for June in over 40 years.” Not only was June a cool month everywhere but it was also a wet one in places, the highest totals being recorded over the midwest and south. Shannon Airport reported its wettest June since 1998 while Belmullet daily rainfall total of 34.7mm on the 21st was its highest daily June total in 25 years.
