Rift Valley quake swarm: 5.7 magnitude earthquakes strikes Ethiopian region

June 12, 2011 – Eritrea – Two5.7, a 5.4, 5.1 and a 5.0 magnitude earthquake by a swarm of nine other quakes has struck the Eritrea region near Ethiopia along the Great Rift Valley at a depth of 10 km. The quakes are occurring near the vacinity of the Nabro volcano. The volcano has not erupted in recorded history. Are we on the verge of an event? Meanwhile, the rift is tearing Africa apart. Eventually, as the rift deepens and widens, surrounding waters will rush in to create a new gulf, or sea, as Somalia will break away from Africa to form the new Somali Plate. See below

Volcanic risks:We are more and more convinced that one of the nearby volcanoes went into an active status as the distance to the ridge fault is to big to create this kind of earthquakes. Additionally almost all the earthquakes are occurring near the volcano complex on the picture. This unusual series of moderate earthquakes have also occurred a couple of months ago in the Gulf of Aden. The earthquakes are typical for separating irregular tectonic plates. The series in the Gulf of Aden had their epicenter in the immediate area of the ridge fault. Due to the close-by volcanoes, an eruption pattern of the Dubbi volcano is still possible.  The pre-eruption pattern of both the Icelandic and Chilean volcanoes from the last few weeks is also present here.” –The Earthquake Report

    @Luis:
    Interesting swarm, indeed.
    The quakes are concentrated along the Bidu volcanic complex comprising both Nabro and dangerous Dubbi volcanoes.
    According to GVP, “Nabro is the most prominent and NE-most of three volcanoes with large summit calderas aligned in a NE-SW direction SW of Dubbi volcano. These three volcanoes, along with Sork Ale volcano, collectively comprise the Bidu volcanic complex.
    Dubbi, located east of the Erta Ale Range and south of the crystalline basement rocks of the Danakil Alps, is a large volcanic massif that rises to 1625 m above the western shore of the Red Sea. About 20 small cinder cones are located at the summit, and extensive basaltic lava fields to the north and NE, known as the Edd lava field, cover an area of 2700 sq km and reach the Red Sea coast. The two most-recent eruptive centers are fissure systems that extend NW-SE and NNE-SSW. The former produced lava flows that reached the Red Sea in 1400 AD. The second created 19 small craters at the summit in 1861. Ash fell more than 300 km from the volcano. Two villages were destroyed and more than 100 persons were killed during Africa’s largest eruption in historical time. Lava flows from the 1861 eruption traveled as far as 22 km and reached the coast.”

    UPDATE 21:25 UTC : The latest earthquake has a magnitude of 5.7! also at a depth of 10 km. These magnitudes can lead to serious damage if the epicenter is below or very near to Afambo. We do not think that there will be injured people as the series started with moderate earthquakes and as people will stay on the streets after so many earthquakes. The current situation tends to become very dangerous.

    UPDATE 21:18 UTC : The present seismic activity does not necessarily mean that the craters would go into eruption, but it can not be excluded also.

    UPDATE 21:18 UTC : The location of the earthquakes has 3 major calderas (historic activity). Mallahle caldera, Nabro caldera and Dubbi volcano.

    • That’s crazy Luisport. Everything is being shaken in the region around this. They’re measuring quakes in Saudi Arabia and one 500 km under the Red Sea. It looks like the beginning of a massive plate separation- this might be the first stage after the Gulf of Aden swarm a few months ago.

    UPDATE 22:35 UTC : This will be a very special volcano eruption because we expect that the eruption comes from the Dubbi volcano who had it’s latest recorded activity in 1861.
