6.0 earthquake shakes southern Peru

June 8, 2011 – LIMA, Peru— An earthquake that Peruvian authorities initially put at a magnitude of 5.0 has shaken the southern Peruvian city of Tacna. There have been no reports of damage or injuries. The quake was very deep- almost 100 km below the surface. The Peruvian Geophysics Institute says the quake struck at 10:06 p.m. (0306 gmt) at a depth of 100 miles (165 kilometers). The U.S. Geological Survey’s posted an initial magnitude of 6.0 for the Tuesday night quake on its website. It put the location at 81 miles (130 kilometes) northeast of Tacna, a sparsely populated region. The turbulence on the Nazca plate and Cocos plate continues. Moderate quakes were also reported in Boliva and south of Panama.
