Uptick in seismic activity in Indonesia- double quakes rattle Java

April 26, 2011JAKARTA, Indonesia – An earthquake has hit waters off Indonesia’s main island of Java, sending panicked residents fleeing from their homes and office buildings. No tsunami warning has been issued, and there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4. It says it hit 88 miles (140 kilometers) south of Cirebon city and was centered nearly 50 miles (78 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor. El Shinta radio says the temblor triggered widespread panic in the nearby town of Garut.
