Mutant Ebola: Leading U.S. scientist warns deadly virus is already changing to become more contagious

October 2014AFRICA The deadly Ebola virus could be mutating to become even more contagious, a leading U.S scientist has warned. The disease has killed nearly 4,000 people, infecting in excess of 8,000 – the majority in the West African nations of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Communities lie in ruins, thousands of children have been orphaned, millions face starvation but the virus continues its unprecedented pace, invading and destroying vast swathes of these countries. Meanwhile three nurses, two in the U.S. and one in Spain have caught the infection while treating Ebola patients, despite wearing protective suits. Now U.S. scientist Peter Jahrling of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease believes the current Ebola outbreak may be caused by an infection that spreads more easily than it did before.
Dr. Jahrling explained that his team, who are working in the epicenter of the crisis in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, are seeing that the viral loads in Ebola patients are much higher than they are used to seeing. He told Vox.com: ‘We are using tests now that weren’t using in the past, but there seems to be a belief that the virus load is higher in these patients [today] than what we have seen before. If true, that’s a very different bug. ‘I have a field team in Monrovia. They are running [tests]. They are telling me that viral loads are coming up very quickly and really high, higher than they are used to seeing. ‘It may be that the virus burns hotter and quicker.’
Dr Jahrling’s warning comes amid calls for the international community to step up their efforts to tackle the Ebola epidemic. Yesterday the World Health Organization admitted it blundered in its efforts to halt the outbreak of the virus in Africa, blaming incompetent staff and a lack of information for the failure. Now British Prime Minister David Cameron has urged the EU to stump up £800millon (1billion euros) to pay for 2,000 health workers to fly out to the affected West African countries, to help stem the spread of the disease. He has insisted that the UK is ‘leading the way’ in providing assistance to West Africa as he backed a call by United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon for other countries to deliver more in the way of funding and resources. –Mail

As this event unfolded a couple of months ago, information was that it had already gone through 33
    mutations?

Yes, I am following this closely.

The other virus no one is speaking much about is The Marburg Virus which as a infection shows up at 5-10 days as on the CDC site. Has similar symptoms of Ebola.

But again. No travel ban. I think quarantine is something obvious in situation like now.

Only England and the US seem to be showing any energy in tackling the ebola virus. This world wide apathy could set the stage for a world pandemic.

that’s according to us and uk news sources, anyway…

china, russia and cuba have all sent substantial aid with no horns tooting or megaphones blaring. at least, not much by our press

india has too… and most likely others. “Doctor Without Borders” aka Medecins Sans Frontieres- not an american or english outfit- seem to have shown most energy by far

If I were a conspiracy theorist the Ebola “scripting” couldn’t get any better or more bizarre.
This is no Y2K drill. No way possible to coordinate Ebola on such a massive, global scale.

Now we read that scientists think the Ebola virus “may be mutating, getting stronger, more contagious & burning hotter”.  Its viral load is increasing at faster & higher rates.  It’s now killing up to 70% of those infected & starting to go global.  No one could script these scenarios. What else do the experts know &  aren’t  telling us.

Sounds like Ebola is going “nuclear”.  No way to cure it & apparently no way to contain it.  Scientists are at odds as to its “air borne transmission” capabilities. It replicates & multiplies exponentially.   Slowly, in first one Africn country than another, then exploding  as the world watches.   Liberia requested 800,000 body bags.  Even if they double bag each Ebola victim…that’s almost a half million dead in one country.

The outbreaks beyond Africa are at a much smaller  rate/pace.  But…isn’t that how this current Ebola outbreak began in Africa?   A fast moving, contagious, deadly disease that liquifies internal organs.  No treatment only hydration. Why not alarm, fear & panic?   Official arrogance, hubris, misinformation, incompetence.  No coordinated, comprehensive, proactive, preventative strategies.  The public can read & is not stupid.  If you trust it…the Internet provides a universe full of credible information one can  research, cross reference & connect the dots.  Try informed alarm, fear & potential panic.

What we do know is Ebola kills quickly & there is no treatment, cure or vaccine. Ebola knows no borders, race or class.  Ebola is an equal opportunity killer virus.  We are witnessing the beginning of Ebola out of Africa.  We see the inadequacies, dysfunction & unpreparedness  of the best healthcare systems in the western world.  We were warned months ago. Now we’re playing catch up & Russian Roulette to dodge Ebola bullets.

With all their ” abundance of caution” and each passing day, event, new revelation…we know America/the world is not ready.  Nothing gives us confidence in our ability to fight Ebola.
( 5 out of a total of 9 US beds available in those 4 high tech Ebola treatment centers?)  Is it time for alarm, fear & mild/controlled panic yet?

Interesting twist:  HIV-AIDS blood = deadly.   Ebola survivor blood = life saving & priceless?

      “Official arrogance, hubris, misinformation, incompetence.”

It sounds so . . . ugly . . . when you say it like that.

That’s supposed to be a joke, Janice, but, I’m with you . . . it ain’t funny. It’s all I can do to NOT pop a cork on this subject. I would phrase it thusly: “Official disconcern, apathy, propaganda, stoopidity” But your way has teeth, and nobody has to look up “stoopidity”.

“No sh*t Sherlock”… It has mutated so many times already, and will continue to do so. It is airborne, and it is spreading quickly. I suspect there are more people infected in the U.S. than we are being told, to prevent a panic. Problem is, that policy will only serve to help spread the disease, because everyone is “fat, dumb and happy” and blissfully ignorant. Maybe that’s what “they” want…

It is not airborne. Don’t put out false info like that. And if it were airborne it would spread like wildfire. WHich it is nowhere close to doing with only thousands infected. If it were airborne it would be spreading many, many, many times faster than it currently is.

i have to agree with aaronwt about the airborne assessment. Compare the travel of the West African epidemic to that of the EV-d68, a virus that is truly airborne in every sense of the word.

Doesn’t seem to be a question of ‘If’, but simply…..when.

Well, if the virus continues to spread exponentially that is. Perhaps, and rightfully so, with the current 8,000 Ebola cases it’s unlikely to mutate into an airborne pathogen. However, once we’re in the tens of thousands or millions of cases in the next few months, it just about becomes a guaranteed certainty.

And if it does become airborne, with a 90% morality rate? With no vaccine, no cure, no effective protocol for treatment? Could it threaten the existence of the human race and have us facing an extinction level event? We’re not talking centuries, decades or years for it to do its damage and unfold, this could explode in a few mere months!

To me this is like watching the world falling off a cliff in very slow motion.

    Hi Steve,
I have been following the outbreak for a while now, it seems as though the weekly up date is a little slow this week. It’s been The CDC has not updated in 5 days. Is that the norm or just the new norm?
