Struggling Liberia creates “plague villages” in Ebola epicenter – potential refugee nightmare

Plague Village
August 2014AFRICA – To try to control the Ebola epidemic spreading through West Africa, Liberia has quarantined remote villages at the epicenter of the virus, evoking the “plague villages” of medieval Europe that were shut off from the outside world. With few food and medical supplies getting in, many abandoned villagers face a stark choice: stay where they are and risk death or skip quarantine, spreading the infection further in a country ill-equipped to cope. In Boya, in northern Liberia’s Lofa County, Joseph Gbembo, who caught Ebola and survived, says he is struggling to raise 10 children under five years old and support five widows after nine members of his family were killed by the virus. Fearful of catching Ebola themselves, the 30-year-old’s neighbors refuse to speak with him and blame him for bringing the virus to the village. “I am lonely,” he said. “Nobody will talk to me and people run away from me.” He says he has received no food or health care for the children and no help from government officials. Aid workers say that if support does not arrive soon, locals in villages like Boya, where the undergrowth is already spreading among the houses, will simply disappear down jungle footpaths. “If sufficient medication, food and water are not in place, the community will force their way out to fetch food and this could lead to further spread of the virus,” said Tarnue Karbbar, a worker for charity Plan International based in Lofa County/
Ebola has killed at least 1,145 people in four African nations, but in the week through to August 13, Lofa County recorded more new cases than anywhere else – 124 new cases of Ebola and 60 deaths. The World Health Organization and Liberian officials have warned that, with little access by healthcare workers to the remote areas hidden deep in rugged jungle zones, the actual toll may be far higher. Troops have been deployed under operation “White Shield” to stop people from abandoning homes and infecting others in a country where the majority of cases remain at large, either because clinics are full or because they are scared of hospitals regarded as ‘death traps.’ “There has to be concern that people in quarantined areas are left to fend for themselves,” said Mike Noyes, head of humanitarian response at ActionAid UK. “Who is going to be the police officer who goes to these places? There’s a risk that these places become plague villages.” Aid workers say the virus reminds them of the forces roaming Liberia during the civil war, making it a byword for brutality. “It was like the war. It was so desolate,” said Adolphus Scott, a worker for U.N. child agency UNICEF describing Zango Town in the jungles of northern Liberia, where most of the 2,000 residents had either died of Ebola or fled.
In recognition of the region’s inability to cope, the World Health Organization this week declared Ebola an international health emergency – only the third time in its 66-year history it has taken this step. Neighbors Guinea and Sierra Leone have placed checkpoints in Gueckedou and Kenema, creating a cross-border quarantine zone of roughly 20,000 square km, about the size of Wales, called the “unified sector.” Within this massive area, Information Minister Lewis Brown described more intense quarantine measures in Lofa county, ring fencing areas where up to 70 percent of people are infected. Access to these hot spots is now cut off except for medical workers,” he said in an interview this week. Reaching the sick in isolated villages there is critical because the county’s main Foya health centre is full. The site was run by U.S. charity Samaritan’s Purse until it pulled out after two of its health workers contracted the virus in Monrovia. Medical charity MSF, which has now stepped in, says 137 patients are packed into the 40-bed site.
But Liberia’s response team is struggling to keep up. The main health care centre in Lofa is “overwhelmed” by new patients, a health ministry report said. A total of 13 health care workers have already died from Ebola in the county while its surveillance office lacks computers to manage cases. Liberia’s Brown also acknowledged the risk: “We can establish as many checkpoints as we want but if we cannot get the food and the medical supplies in to affected communities, they will leave.” Even if the resources arrive, help might be chased away. Unlike in other areas of the country, where Ebola awareness campaigns are helping to draw people out of hiding, in this isolated border region, far from the otherwise ubiquitous ‘Ebola is Real’ government billboards, denial is still strong. According to a local rumour, merchants dressed as health workers are taking people away in order to sell human organs, provoking violent reactions from locals, Karbarr said. –Yahoo News

  1. Food should be dropped for them and water as well as medicine.

AIRDROPS, so no one will get infected. drop of clothing, warm blankets, water and food and no one will get infected, while looking after the ones who are battling on their own. Throw in some games and book and pens and paper to keep them occupied. Make them feel ‘thought of’.

I think the biggest problem here is that it takes weeks for the symptoms to develop! Have the feeling that in the next month we will see if there has been any effective isolation of the virus but so far it seems to be infecting at an increasing rate; not decreasing and if it is still increasing then it is going to reach a threshold where it simply explodes upon human kind, again because of the long incubation period.
Think about it…in this sex thirsty society we live in with the lengthy incubation period of this virus that explosion threshold might just be a few weeks away.

Yes Dennis, do you question whether we are seeing the beginning of the tribulation? I always believed in a pretrib rapture but now I’m not so sure. Your thoughts?

I have always been instructed to believe in a pre-tribulation removal of the Church based on scriptures from The Book of Daniel (I didn’t look that up) that the restrainer had to be removed before The Man of Sin could be revealed(paraphrased). So based on that comment, and since the Holy Spirit dwells in us now, it is the belief that The Spirit would reveal to believers that this person is the Anti-Christ.

When you speak of the tribulation period, the rapture, catching away, or the great assembly, as it is sometimes called: that subject always surfaces. Many believers doubt this belief. However, the Bible has many cases of Believers( also the children of Israel) been delivered from an hour of persecution/death just in time.

To answer your question, the world is falling into chaos as I keyboard this comment, in all areas.
In order for the world to accept a world leader who has all the answers to chaos in the world, war, hunger, a condition must exist………………Remember that……………

Since the election of this president and in the last 24 months, I would say that the seed for the approaching times of trouble has been laid is sprouting. We are currently in a blood moon cycle
that started on April 14th 2014 and is its climax will be in April 2015. There has only been four blood moons since 1493, this is the four one and they are all on major feast days for Israel.

So, yes to your question and when you see the cornerstone of the 3rd Jewish Temple laid and they are allowed to build, then we are in the tribulation period.

Thank you Dennis, I too have been following prophecy from scripture as is my family. We are hoping we will be taken up this fall during the feast of trumpets. The timing is right with the 4 blood moons and many other occurrences which I see you are already aware. How much worse can our world get???? I pray God gives us all wisdom through these times as there are those that will deceive and confuse.

Hey Dennis: I have struggled with this teaching for years, but I have never heard your take on it before. So, I dove into Daniel 12, and here’s what I came up with: According to the Interlinear (Hebrew/English/Greek/English) Bible, the word used in Daniel 12:1 is ya·‘ă·mōḏ, which means “shall stand up”; that is, “Michael shall stand up. . . .”

        http://biblehub.com/interlinear/daniel/12-1.htm

The same word appears 32 times in the Hebrew Bible, from Exodus through Nahum, and is translated (depending upon verse/context) as “endure, stand, arise, be present”:

        http://biblehub.com/hebrew/yaamod_5975.htm

Some scholars argue that, in context, chapter 12 is the clearest picture in the Hebrew Bible of the resurrection:

        https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=70&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CFQQFjAJODw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.preteristarchive.com%2FBibleStudies%2FBible_OT%2FDaniel%2Fdaniel_12-02.html&ei=KfTzU7TwLoj3yQTC74K4DQ&usg=AFQjCNExxyDlgaVh0ZWG42p-IaMXdmDVxQ

I urge you to consider that the restrainer (2 Thess 2:7-12) ceases to restrain in order that wickedness run amok and be revealed (reveal itself) to all. As such, that time of trouble is a testament AGAINST non-believers, who will see, repeatedly, the Glory of God but “repenteth not” (KJV) (Revelation 2:21; 9:20; 16:8; 16:11). That said, the reason that I struggle with the notion of the pre-trib rapture is Revelation 9:20-21 (KJV): “And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.” Due to the “universal” religious system which has infiltrated nearly every “genre” of Christianity . . . we are all guilty of idolatry, even if it is without intent. Leviticus 5:17 (NASB) “Now if a person sins and does any of the things which the LORD has commanded not to be done, though he was unaware, still he is guilty and shall bear his punishment.”

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (Daniel 3) were delivered from fire. Daniel was delivered from the lion’s den (Daniel 6). The Israelites were delivered from the plagues in Egypt, were delivered at the Passover, were delivered at the parting of the Sea (Exodus). Jacob saw the face of God and was delivered (Gen. 32:22-31). The Jews were delivered from the Persians in the book of Esther. The difference between them and us is . . . they had not intermarried the truth with a lie; they were not, in any way, idolaters. The same is not true of us. That said, I HOPE there is a rapture, because I believe we will experience the glory of God, but we will witness the wrath of God, first.

Niebo: A great response, a great research blog answer. As I posted, yes that has been my instruction as a child that the Church would be removed before the advent of The Man of Sin.
Another reason for this teaching was that in scripture its says that God has not appointed us to wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9) but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

It has been taught(believed) that the wrath of God is separate from his judgment. For example, after The Jewish Temple is built and The Man of Sin intervenes and stops the daily sacrafice and proclaims himself to be God and the world accepts him and worships him as such, then God’s wrath will be poured out on the world, his anger. That would be a mid-Trib rapture as some believe. I didn’t put a much more, on the way to work, but as you I pray there will be one.

But, I think we should live and if there is not one, then we should be prepared to give our lives for the faith because to denounce Christ is the eternal end of a person. So, if not then it is what it is.
If Jesus died for us, then what is it for us to die for his name/cause?

“For I am the LORD your God, who stirs up the sea and its waves roar (the LORD of hosts is His name). I have put My words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand*, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’” Isaiah 51:15-16

*”My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” John 10:29

The best way I know to illustrate being covered in the “shadow” of his hand is to imagine that each of us stands in the palm of one hand while His other hand covers us. Where, in all of creation, is safer? Who, indeed, might snatch us away?

Yes, my friend, whether to physical deliverance and to eternal salvation or to spiritual freedom but to death in His name, we are His and at His mercy; He is in control, and we are not, and His GRACE is sufficient for us. Come, Lord Jesus! Come!
