Record high temperatures roast Oklahoma- heat warnings issued for numerous counties

August 1, 2012 – OKLAHOMA – The National Weather Service forecasts highs near 113 degrees (45 C) this afternoon; 109 on Thursday; 107 on Friday; and 102 on Saturday for Tulsa. Highs are expected to finally sink to the 90s again by Sunday, when a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast for Tulsa. Tulsa reached its hottest temperature of the calendar year on Tuesday, 112 degrees. Tulsa finished the month of July with 1.38 inches of rain, almost 2 inches below normal for the month. The weather service extended its heat warning for northeast Oklahoma until 7 p.m. Friday. Counties under the warning are: Adair, Cherokee, Craig, Creek, Delaware, Haskell, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Nowata, Okfuskgee, Okmulgee, Osage, Ottawa, Pawnee, Pittsburg, Rogers, Sequoyah, Tulsa, Wagoner and Washington. According to the weather service, these areas are expected to have high temperatures in the 105- to 115-degree range each afternoon, with overnight lows in the mid- to upper 70s. More urbanized areas in Tulsa County are expected to have overnight lows in the mid- to upper 80s. –Tulsa World

August 2, 2012 – OKLAHOMA – Fire crews have been battling a large fire at an oil refinery in Tulsa. Neighbors told local news outlets they heard an explosion at the refinery in west Tulsa early Thursday. No other details were immediately available. The refinery is owned by Dallas-based HollyFrontier Corp. According to the company’s website, the Tulsa refinery has a crude oil capacity of 125,000 barrels a day. –Chron

George Ure’s Urban Survival site had a letter recently from a guy in OK who said that 150-300 year old trees are dying. They survived the drought of the dustbowl, but back then the temps were not so consistently high. The smaller trees and shrubs like wild plums and sumac are all dead. It is so sad. May God have mercy and send rain.

It was 113 with a heat index of 122 in central Ok today. 😦 my ac is running constantly but the house stays around 85 degrees.

    The oceans are warming. Permafrost is melting, releasing more methane into the air which traps about 25 times more heat than C02. The continents are heating up because landmasses insulate heat. We have less trees on the planet due to urbanization. There is a phytoplankton dieoff due in the world’s oeans due to red tide and pollution.
    
    There are many factors at play but the bottomline is the collapse of one system causes the degradation of others; because they are all interconnected. We have never understood this as a species.
