5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes off the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island

July 21, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – A strong earthquake has struck off the east coast of New Zealand, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.8 temblor struck Saturday off the east coast of the North Island at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles). New Zealand is prone to earthquakes. In February 2011, a strong quake in Christchurch killed 185 people and destroyed much of the city’s downtown area. –HP

    The volcano is stirring now an earthquake ……and a ‘4.5 earthquake has struck Victoria this evening. The quake struck in Moe, 117km east south east of Melbourne, at 7.11pm.’ It seems that the lithosphere is ringing like a bell.

    There was a 5.2 and a 5.1 offshore Northern California Saturday morning.
