6.7 earthquake strikes: current seismicity in the Philippines as tectonic plate agitation increases

Earthquake swarms near Katla and Henggil volcano on Iceland
Small seismic swarms have occurred near Katla volcano (S Iceland), Henggil volcano (SW Iceland) and a weaker swarm near Askja (N-Central Iceland) during the past 48 hours. The cause of the swarms is unclear and their intensity is not alarming. They are not necessarily volcanic, but could related to tectonic stress release around the main Icelandic rift zones.

My question is, since the earthquakes in the Philippines are caused by subduction, could this trigger large earthquakes near Taiwan and that nuclear facility in Taiwan? I really don’t know how these things work, but couldn’t help but notice all the “connecting lines” on the map.

EQ-20120205-229210-TW
There were two 4.5M earthquakes in Taiwan shown on rsoe alert map, one was 39.26 km from a submarine volcano and 40.48 km from a nuclear facility. If you zoom out, you can see that the Philippines lies to the south of Taiwan. There is a blue line (subduction zone) that runs from the Philippines north toward Taiwan and branching off of this blue line is a white line (continental convergent boundary) that runs through Taiwan which appears to run thru an offshore oil terminal, not to mention that it looks fairly close to the nuclear facility.

New hot springs in Greenland after an earthquake (swarm?)
Posted on February 5, 2012 by Jón Frímann
While hot springs are in few areas of Greenland. They are not common and not as hot as those in Iceland. I do not know a lot about the details of geology of Greenland. So I am unsure on the details why there are hot springs in Greenland to start with. But this news is even more interesting for that exact reason.
According to the Greeland Radio new hot springs opened up in the village of Kangersuatsiaq of the west coast of Greenland. After an what appears to be swarm of earthquakes, with the largest one somewhere around ML2.9 to ML3.? (enough to sake people pictures on the wall). A new hot springs did open up following this earthquakes. The water seems to be around 20C to up 36C. It might be warmer, as details on this are few and little.
Best to my knowledge there is no known volcanoes in this area and have not been in the past ~65 million years or longer.

We live in a world of constant changes.
Some changes are for good, some for the worst.
The geological history of the planet shows that no land mass is safe from any type upheaval wheather it be an earthquake, tidal wave or volcanic action.
Unfortunately, some of these earth change events occur where humans live.
So far, everyday in 2012 has been an eventful day it seems. Truely this will be an interesting
year in earth change events.

This appears very serious, for the philippino people, the mass of population is upon the micro plates, which is being squeezed by massive regional plates. The inhabitants have noware to go, the islands they live on could slip into the sea and or be over run with tsumani waves. The clock is ticking for these islands, very sad.

The news locally here was upgraded to 7.0. I was in Robinsons Mall in Dumaguete when the earthquake struck. There were cracks in the plastering of the building, and bits of plastering fell. I just stayed sat down while watching people’s response. Everyone panicked running for the doors. A tsunami level 4 warning was given, which then caused people to run to the mountains. I don’t know yet of any casualties, although a text message went around that a small boy was killed, but if there were many casualties, it would be because of panic related recklessness.
BTW, a man from the Philippines, is a Filipino, not philippino; and a woman is Filipina…

Fillade, that was a very disturbing outlook for the Philippines. So now, I’m depending on prayer, and God’s mercy and protection for my country and people.

Update: 40 killed and many missing with 100 injured due to earthquake induced landslides. The death toll is expected to continue to rise.
Update: 13 have been killed and many are missing following this earthquake. Landslides and aftershocks including a m6.2 in the last hour are making conditions difficult for rescuers.
5 have been killed and at least 29 missing. more news to follow.
Update 07:23 UTC : The NDRRMC said both damage to property and aftershocks are expected from the quake, whose epicenter was traced to 5 km northwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
Update 06:23 UTC : Not much more news than the 1 child killed has come from the authorities. Local tsunami alerts have been put out in the Visayas region – Alert Level 2 – stay away from the coast due to unusual waves.
Meanwhile, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) head Benito “Ramos said a child was crushed when a wall fell after the earthquake in Negros Oriental”.
In Negros Occidental, Ramos said the quake damaged the glass windows of a mall. In Iloilo, cracks were also noted at a mall.
The Cebu Department of Foreign Affairs building also had cracks.
In Cebu, the provincial capitol suspended work in the afternoon.

Based on a 5-year japan-funded study; the countries in the Pacific “ring of fire” will experience strong earthquakes. Some already happened: Haiti, Japan, New Z., etc. Japan’s Sendai is not yet the big one?. For the Philippnes is yet to come. It was said the Phil. gov’t authorities have been given a copy of the study but were busy campaigning in the last Presidential election. Election is over, what preparedness efforts are we doing???? Per climate change danger zone map; at full sea level rise due to melting ice caps, >90% of Metro Manila will be under water???….according to climate change Filipino expert…CDO, Bukidnon, Iligan, Albay included in danger zone areas!
