February 6, 2012 – PHILIPPINES – Filipino officials say a strong earthquake has rocked the central Philippines, killing at least 53 people and causing widespread damage and power outages. The U.S. Geological Survey says the 6.8-magnitude quake struck late Monday morning at a depth of 20 kilometers. The quake was centered in a narrow strait just off Negros Island. Authorities say a landslide killed 29 people, others were killed in buildings and homes that collapsed on Negros, including the seaside town of La Libertad. Dozens of people are missing. Numerous aftershocks continued to shake the island hours after the quake. Officials say there is no concern of a tsunami, although some coastal towns nearby were hit by large waves. –VOA

    My children’s grandmother lives in Cebu along with their aunt and uncles. We have not been able to contact them yet to see if they are ok. They were able to meet her for the first time last July before she went home. I told her then that we must all repent and love one another and to not fear the things about to come and have faith in the promise of God. Above all else, love one another!

    Some corrections to the post. The reports so far there are 29 buried, but not yet confirmed dead. If I remember rightly, the depth was 47km not 20km. One thing I noticed is that the intesity of quakes are not round circles from the epicenter, decreasing in intensity the further out you go; but also depends on soil composition, wetness of the ground, and strength of the ground. Ayungon, which is very close to the quake, registered only 5+ on the richter scale, while Dumaguete (where I live), was worst hit, reaching 7.0. I was in Robinson’s Mall at the time the quake struck, and the whole building shook sideways. No tsunami came, but text messages (probably triggered by mobile companies themselves so many texts would be sent therefore spending more money of messages) caused widespread panic. People brought what they could, and fled to the mountains. The roads going upto Valencia (inland town from Dumaguete), was like a scene out of Deep Impact – full of cars going in one direction. Here is a paste with a more detailed list of places and the intensity they felt the quake.

    A 2:30 p.m. NDRRMC update said the quake was felt at:

    Intensity VII: Dumaguete City (Negros Oriental);
    Intensity VI: La Carlota City and La Castellana, Negros Occidental; Argao, Cebu;
    Intensity V: Roxas City; Dao and Ivisan, Capiz; Iloilo City; Ayungon, Negros Oriental; Kanlaon City; Lapu-Lapu City; Guimaras; Cebu City; San Carlos City; Bacolod City; Sagay City; Tagbilaran City; Candoni, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental;
    Intensity IV: San Jose de Buenavista, Pandan, Anin-y, Patnugon, Antique; Kalibo, Aklan; Sipalay, Negros Occidental; Dipolog City, Ormoc City;
    Intensity III: Butuan City, Agusan del Norte; Legazpi City, Albay; Carmen, Cagayan de Oro; Tacloban City; Catbalogan; Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte; Masbate, Masbate; Cagayan de Oro City;
    Intensity II: Cabid-an, Sorsogon; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Mambajao, Camiguin; and
    Intensity I: Pagadian City.

    This series of quakes has either created a new fault line, or exposed a hidden fault line, along the deepest parts of the Tanon Starit. If you could take a cross section of the Tanon Strait (between Negros and Cebu islands), the sea bed is ‘V’ shaped, reaching to a depth of 1,500 feet at the deepest part. It is pretty much like that from the North to the south of the strait.

    Alvin, thanks for reporting this and keeping us informed. Nothing on CNN or FOX about this earthquake that I saw (but I don’t watch much mainstream news). Guess the “information controllers” don’t want us to know what’s happening to our planet. Once the Internet is gone, we’re truly on our own.
