At least 35 dead, 100 missing – after powerful earthquake strikes Taiwan

Taiwan Quake
February 2016 TAIWAN A powerful and shallow 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan. Most of the 32 confirmed to have died after the quake were in the Weiguan Jinlong building in Tainan City. Tainan Mayor William Lai said survivors and relatives had reported legal “violations” but gave no further details. Dozens of people thought to still be trapped in the ruins. Two of them, a male and a female at different sides of the building, were reported to be talking to rescue workers. Huang Kuang-wei, 20, was rescued early on Sunday, but a six-month-old baby girl pulled alive from the rubble a few hours later died in hospital.
Mr Lai said: “I’ve contacted judicial units and prosecutors have formally launched an investigation. “We’ve also commissioned three independent bodies to preserve evidence during the rescue so we can assist the residents if they want to file lawsuits in the future. We will hold the builder responsible if they have broken the law.”
The 17 storeys of the Weiguan Jinlong (Golden Dragon) apartment complex crumpled as the magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck just before 04:00 local time on Saturday (20:00 GMT Friday). Census records suggest about 260 people were living there but it is now thought that more than 300 were inside at the time of the collapse, as some students renting rooms would not have been registered and people may have had guests staying to celebrate the Lunar New Year holiday beginning on Monday.
Hundreds of soldiers are involved in the rescue effort, with the help of hi-tech equipment, sniffer dogs and cranes. Shelters are being set up for those who have lost their homes in the city of two million people. About 200 people have now been rescued. Nearly 500 people were injured as a result of the earthquake, and dozens remain in hospital. One woman at the site said her son had been found dead but she was hoping her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren would be rescued alive. “I won’t give up hope, I will wait here until I see them come out safe,” she said. Su Yi-ming, 48, who lived on the sixth floor of the complex, told AFP news agency that he was rescued after tapping on a wardrobe that was trapping him. “I knocked on the closet to get the attention of rescuers who broke the window to get me,” he said.
The quake was shallow, meaning its effects would have been amplified, the US Geological Survey said. There were also at least five aftershocks. The quake was felt in the capital Taipei, 300km away. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and often sees tremors. –BBC

    awful! and heartbreaking!
what caused an entire 17 storey bldg to collapse… structural faults/contractor error/malfeasance-
or possibly a larger earthquake than is being listed?

What’s causing these earthquakes and volcanoes is God’s destroyer. When it gets here it will put everyone on the same level. If you haven’t accepted Christ yet as your personal Savior better do it soon. This world if falling apart and its permeated with evil. You can be spared from everything coming soon. If you wait and Christ comes back you will be forced to go through the tribulation, the Bible says there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth , a time of terrible sorrow. just say in prayer “I’m a sinner and in need of you Jesus to save me from my sins”. That’s all it takes , now live your life to strive to be more like Him.

This quake caused major R earaches before it happened, craving popcorn, slight vertigo.
the USGS gave it a 6.4 but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the National Tsunami Warning Center both gave the magnitude as a 6.7 and I tend to believe in the higher magnitude based on the damage the quake caused.
The next largest A/S based on my forecasting methods should be as follows. This is not to say that the quake could not hit anytime but this timeline works most of the time.
Timeline… this quake A/S timeline is largest A/S should hit by Mid day on Tuesday the 9th Often this hits during the first 12 hours or less but if this is a precursor meaning a larger than the original quake should hit then it will likely hit during that first 12-24 hours. The size depends on the size of the main shock. One the size of the Taiwan quake could be anywhere between 5.5-6.2 + or minus 1 point. Then we can look at the next timeline. It would be the 23-29 of February.
