Vast underground river system discovered in once-vibrant Western Sahara – climate collapsed rapidly

Africa
November 2015 AFRICA A riveting mystery is unfolding in Western Sahara, as scientists discover a massive ancient underground river system with the aid of satellite imaging. It confirms that only about 5,000 years ago, the Sahara was an immensely vibrant place. The African region containing the Mauritanian Desert is roughly the size of the United States – or a quarter of Africa; so if such conditions persisted today, the river system would be the world’s 12th-largest, French-led research indicates in the journal Nature Communications.
That means a river some 500km long, with sources in the Atlas Mountains and Hoggar Highlands, in present-day Algeria. The team used hi-tech equipment aboard the Japanese Advanced Land Observing Satellite – particularly the PALSAR sensor system, capable of detailed underground imaging from space. As the river approached the coast, it carried important minerals and nutrients by way of an ancient underground canyon system, the team believes. Those were fed to the variety of plant life, which existed in abundance in the region and off the coast of Mauritania, as food for marine life. The region just off the coast had an incredibly rich ecosystem, with plenty of filter feeders and other organisms sustaining it. If that area had stayed hospitable, the entire region would be fit for humans to thrive in.

All of this activity took place during several humid periods stretching to 245,000 years ago. The last such period would have been 5,000 years ago, according to calculations. But abrupt changes in climate caused a near-complete dry- up. The connection with the Cap Timiris Canyon system is obvious – the underground canyon lines up almost perfectly to the river system. The 2.5km wide and kilometer-deep artery that was first mapped in 2003 terminates off the Mauritanian coast. Underground sediment and river-bone particles found at the bottom of the ancient underground shelf establishes the link with inland Africa.
“It’s a great geological detective story and it confirms more directly what we had expected. This is more compelling evidence that in the past there was a very big river system feeding into this canyon,” Russell Wynn of the National Oceanography Center in Southampton, who helped create the 3D map of the canyon, told the Guardian. He was not part of the current research. As the researchers indicate in the study, the current finding “provides new insights for the interpretation of terrigenous sediment records off Western Africa, with important implications for our understanding of the paleohydrological history of the Sahara.”
According to Wynn, this should serve as an example to those who doubt how fast climate change can happen. The area in Western Sahara went from humid to arid within a space of just a couple of thousands of years. –RT

A good portion of the top of the continent used to be lush green irrigated farmland with olive trees growing along the roads, all built and provided by the Roman empire. Not sure how far inland it was though.

Quite coincidental that since the arrival of the last run of “fallen angels”/ET /AI whatever option one prefers,
which is documented to be around 12 000 to 7 000 years ago: this 6th extinction has started… which is a few 1 000 times faster than any of the previous 5…

Also, the entire fertile crescent stretching from the Persian and Bactria empire across Egypt and the Sahara has been turned into wasteland; the epic of Gilgamesh is the first epic of environmental destruction; now the various Book of Giants tell us that Gilgamesh was a 10m giant that chopped down the massive cedars of Lebanon (Chaldees) with his cohorts to conquer the known world; they were the offspring of “fallen angels” and women… the mighty men of the Shem who had un-naturally long lives; there was a clsh of the titans; the Indian Mahabarata relates this high tech war…

Evidence is emerging that there was a massive nuclear war and the Sahara and Saudi deserts are for once, not man-made, but not natural either… giant-made? ET-made? “fallen angel”? demon? Dracos messengers?

Interestingly, the same epicentres still have wars raging where these angels were said to have arrived or have been locked out from… Syria, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, Afghanistan etc. “nothing is new under the sun…”

Is there more ancient technology which they want to back-engineer?… to put the finishing touches on a mars-type earth? things that make one go hmmm…

This has been studied extensively. And proved without a doubt that this area changes from wet area to desert area, and it has for a long time. ANd it will be a wet area again, Yes the climate changes with time, ok. so what.

Interesting posting shared with us by The Extinction Protocol’s Alvin… is this happening anywhere else in the World today…. ? Food for thought.
    Thank you for sharing, Alvin.

    Alvin,
Is it known why this part of Africa became such a wasteland. The Atlas pictures in the fifties do not show the desert to be as large as it is now shown.

That line across Africa looks an awful lot like the one from Robert Temple’s book The Sirius Mystery. The Dogon tribe told him that in the ancient past the Nile flowed west across the continent and emptied into the Atlantic.

The underground rivers have been known about for many years.
In some towns in Algeria south of the Atlas mountains are great wells. You can look down and see the water flowing. The old Foreign Legion head quarters town of Sidi-Bel-Abbas has these wells.
I have an image of an old Roman well located in the middle of a sand sea 600 kilometers south of Algiers. Still producing water.

Hey guys, I just now read a really interesting article called: “In targeting Exxon on climate, New York puts all corporations on notice.” Apparently the New York attorney general is investigating EXXON for financial fraud of knowingly misleading the public about climate risks over the past 10 years! The article also mentions a book called “Bending Science” by Tom McGarity and Wendy Wagner that goes into detail explaining various despicable tactics being use to slow or stop Scientist from coming forward as well. (Sigh) Anyway, the ‘Bending Science’ book looks to me like a real barn burner to say the least. ; )
