Unusual geological event in Fiji on Saturday, 30 May, 2015

 Fiji
May 2015 FIJI, South Pacific – Tremors experienced in the district of Nakasaleka and Rakiraki in Kadavu have stopped. The Mineral Resources Department says a team will be going to the villages that experienced the tremors to carry out a geological investigation. Director Malakai Finau says they will try to find why it is localized. “We need to investigate so we could find out more information about the events such as the centre; the epicenter and the depths and that would help us find out the real causes of these tremors.” The tremors were experienced in the past week. Villagers reported cracks to walls of a hall and some houses in Nakasaleka. –RSOE

does anyone know why these are not being called “earthquakes”?

i was doing a little digging for history of the really deep quakes, and was surprised to see Fiji has had 10 very deep (537-675km) quakes over mag 7, between 1990-2013.
that’s a lot more than any other single region, in that timeframe

by comparison the very deep ones rarely occur in Japan. USGS only lists 2 others between 1990-2013:
    Sept 2013- 450km/6.8- off Tokyo
    Jul 2007- 370km/6.7- off Kyoto
