The ocean off the coast of California is “turning into a desert” – marine ecosystem crash is unprecedented

May 2015 OCEAN HEALTH The waters of the Pacific off the coast of California are a clear, shimmering blue today, so transparent it’s possible to see the sandy bottom below. Viewing the ocean from the state’s famous craggy headlands, it’s impossible to know that the ocean’s unusual clarity is hiding a cruel beauty: clear water is a sign that the ocean is turning into a desert, and the chain reaction that causes that bitter clarity is perhaps most obvious on the beaches of the Golden State, where thousands of emaciated sea lion pups are stranded. Sea lions are a ubiquitous part of the Californian landscape – they’re up and down beaches, piers and wharfs, with an overall population estimated at around 300,000. They have the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 to thank for their existence, passed by Congress in response to concerns about dwindling populations of marine mammals, including sea lions.
Now, the familiar creatures have become victims of their own success, with some arguing that their population may have reached natural capacity, and others blaming it on changing environmental conditions in California. Over the last three years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has noticed a growing number of strandings on the beaches of California and up into the Pacific north-west. In 2013, 1,171 sea lions were stranded, and 2,700 have already stranded in 2015 – a sign that something is seriously wrong, as pups don’t normally wind up on their own until later in the spring and early summer. The problem, explains Justin Viezbicke of NOAA, is those crystal-clear waters. “The main contributing factor that we’re looking at right now and talking about with the biologists and climatologists on the Channel Islands [a major sea lion rookery] is the lack of upwelling. We haven’t had the strong north winds that drive the currents that create it, and because it hasn’t materialized – it’s moved the prey further and deeper from the moms that are foraging.” –Guardian
Warm Blob
Nate Mantua, NOAA: “[An unusually large number of sea lions stranding in 2013 was a red flag] there was a food availability problem even before the ocean got warm.” Johnson: This has never happened before… It’s incredible. It’s so unusual, and there’s no really good explanation for it. There’s also a good chance that the problem will continue, said a NOAA research scientist in climatology, Nate Mantua.
Experts blame a lack of food due to unusually warm ocean waters. NOAA declared an El Nino, the weather pattern that warms the Pacific, a few weeks ago. The water is three and a half to six degrees warmer than the average, according to Mantua, because of a lack of north wind on the West Coast. Ordinarily, the north wind drives the current, creating upwelling that brings forth the nutrients that feed the sardines, anchovies and other fish that adult sea lions feed on. –ERN

Nuclear waste and other garbage has been thrown and blasted into the Pacific ocean (think Fukashima) and it is killing the ocean. We once lived in Eureka and loved the coastal areas, Samoa Island, Crescent City, Agate Beach, Trinidad. I can’t imagine walking along there anymore. It’s heart breaking.

It is interesting and worrying “that clear water is a sign that the ocean is turning into a desert.” How can a ocean turn into a desert, does it have anything to do with the premise that California is[considered] a desert?

Uhhhhh….hello NOAA…..maybe the water is unusually warm because of all the radiation it was contaminated with!

Do you not understand how radiation works? Do you not understand how dilution works? Do you not understand how exposure works?

Clearly you do not, because there’s more radiation in the Colorado river from picking up bits of uranium from natural deposits, or in several US cities due to natural Radon deposits then there is in the Pacific ocean.

Your idea of radiation increasing the temp is so goddamn insane that it boarders on laughable. See, Nuclear power plants have these things called spent fuel pools. And these things are literally big pools of water with spent fuel rods at the bottom. Whole rods, just lining the bottom. And even with that much highly radioactive material around, it only raises the temp of the water by 2 to 5 degrees on average.

In order to raise the sea temp like they’re doing here you would literally have to coat the entire seabed in that area in fuel rods. And ironically, even if you did that, you could still swim around on the top just fine because water is such a good nuclear insulator.

We went to Long Beach, WA las week and noticed the sea lions dead on the beach. Even up north they are dying…. it’s awful. It’s not just sea lions either – we also saw squid on the shoreline dead a few months back… and they said the starfish are dying from some virus… it’s the food chain collapsing…

Between the drought and the mass die offs, seems like the Golden State (California) is going to turn into the dead one.

It’s not just California that is turning into a dead zone area. The whole planet is dying due to climate warming that was brought on by greed and/or apathy of the human species.

Btw- I really do feel that possibly a worldwide massive subliminal mind control program is in place as well? I mean its got to be some form of mind control technique being applied to the masses because people are well aware that our planet is being destroyed but yet for some reason the people as a whole wont act on it? Indeed not even knowing that the very survival of not only their children but also just about every living species on this planet is enough to rally the masses together. Of course it also doesn’t help that the ‘paid off’ news media continues to spread propaganda that climate warming is due to the planet just doing its cyclic ‘thang’ as well. (Sigh) Thus we remain caught up in a web of self destruction due to our own making…..

kat… ive wondered the same… it is so odd how few are even remotely willing to hear & see, and of those few even fewer who seem able to make any sense of it all… its like its So Big that there is too much to take in,
ive always been one to stare at the needle or the knife coming but even so, i find my heart & mind shutting down after a few minutes of pondering… to reawaken and come back to it again later, but for some reason i too have this psychic narcolepsy… i’m just determined to keep fighting to stay awake… but becoming so, so tired…

I find Revelation 8:8-9 the most disturbing, “a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the creatures which were in the sea and had life, died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.”

Granted, we have yet to see the sea turn to blood, actual or due to algae blooms, and few ships were/have been destroyed by Fukushima (unless by way of contamination that no one is allowed to talk about yet), but a nuclear reactor, while venting steam, resembles a volcano, which could be described as a “mountain burning with fire”. I’ve heard different interpretations, a meteor, a literal volcano, but the reactor spewing poisonous steam is spooky. Factor in the estimate that the Pacific Ocean comprises 46 percent of the world’s water, and a “third” of creatures dead seems less of a stretch.

Also, the author of the first article “hints”: “. . .The chain reaction that causes that BITTER clarity. . . ” It’s almost like he wanted to say it. . .

so does radioactivity, i have read.

warmer waters are in no way responsible for these massive die-offs which are snowballing incrementally. warm waters have always been the ocean’s spawning nurseries.

its What is IN these warm waters that is killing the Sea… and the Land will soon follow…
      and so will we

God created Nature to handle all creation, and every year mankind expands the earth gets worse in every way — the only consolation is to those Bible believers who actually study the Holy Scriptures and see what the end result will be, but fortunately The Rapture will solve the problem for True Believers in Lord. All the answers are in The Book, read it and know the future. I sleep well knowing I’ll not be around for the final chapter.

  13. It is obvious that the oil spill in California was masking the radiation problems, it is heartbreaking what is happening there and around the world. Most people do not know this but the oceans are the lungs of the earth not the rainforests, the oceans cover over 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, the oceans microbial communities and algae produce 80 percent of the worlds oxygen requirements.

I work as an ecologist in Ecuador. I am from the UK, I have had to just stand by and watch the Amazon be destroyed with many indigenous, even though 800,000 signed a petition to the government to protect the rainforests here from Ecocide, it goes on. Now China is building a railway through the rainforest. Our key ecosystems are being systematically destroyed and nothing is being done to protect them. I wrote a book called The Silent Ecocide that explains this, just found your website. Thank you so much for caring as much as I do.
