Climate change study has revealed Gulf Stream system slow down

March 2015CLIMATE CHANGE The Gulf Stream is one of the most important heat transport systems on the planet. It efficiently brings heat from the equator to the Northern Hemisphere through ocean currents. But a recent study indicates that it has been slowing down, which is most interesting because it results in cooling of the region when most other parts of the world are warming up. Michael Mann, one of the study researchers, comments, “Common climate models are underestimating the change we’re facing, either because the Atlantic overturning is too stable in the models or because they don’t properly account for Greenland ice sheet melt, or both. That is another example where observations suggest that climate model predictions are in some respects still overly conservative when it comes to the pace at which certain aspects of climate change are proceeding.”
The Distinguished Professor of Meteorology at Penn State, comments that the new study found evidence that this Atlantic overturning, or the Gulf Stream system is, indeed slowing down. And this, of course, means, less warm ocean water from the tropics and Southern Hemisphere is getting pumped north, alternately less cold water is getting pushed southward.
Study author Stefan Rahmstorf, of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), comments, “If the slowdown of the Atlantic overturning continues, the impacts might be substantial. Disturbing the circulation will likely have a negative effect on the ocean ecosystem, and thereby fisheries and the associated livelihoods of many people in coastal areas. A slowdown also adds to the regional sea-level rise affecting cities like New York and Boston. Finally, temperature changes in that region can also influence weather systems on both sides of the Atlantic, in North America as well as Europe.” –PN

actually… pretty much… it is physics that controls everything… at the molecular level one may find some mystery whether wave or particle… within that mystery may lie the one true God…. hard to say… but Climate Change is not False as you so claim…. it is Constant.. dong ding dong

This is a problem identified several years ago. We all saw the snow events in the North East this past winter. Based on what has been written and discussed, that was just a taste of what is to come. I’ve been telling people to prepare for much colder winters and shorter growing seasons.

Can anybody help me out on that?

      1) yep
2)the scientists had it right back in the 70’s when they said global cooling was on the way. Then the warming agenda and it’s lies started. Now it’s obvious the agw arguments were all bogus and COLD is what is coming.
      3) how’s that for help?

real good GMAN4721…….Because I’ve been stocking up on thermal blankets, hand warmers, feet warmers socks/gloves outer wear and other things that create/keep heat…….when the power goes out.

We live in a world of change

  4. I wonder why nobody notices the incomplete logic applied to the ocean conveyor system. We are told that the reason warm water sinks in the North Atlantic is because it evaporates water, thus loosing heat and becoming salty, and thus colder and heavier.

What is the logic for cold water rising in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean to become warm water? Also, doesn’t warm ocean water evaporate anywhere else in the world to produce cold, salty sinking water?

There is clearly a different and more dominant mechanism driving ocean currents. Warming and cooling of ocean water do occur synchronous with the driver of ocean currents, but they do not provide the driving energy to move the water. It is rather ludicrous to believe that sinking water in the North Atlantic can provide the primary force necessary to push and pull water clear around the planet in neat currents that crisscross each other.

Yes, I agree! Just as hurricanes are spun up by the coriolis affect caused by the earth’s spin I believe we see the same thing happening in the oceans. As the currents move further away from the equator the affect decreases, the waters do cool and sink so a portion of the water flow does return deep in the ocean. just a opinion and would like to hear others too!

  5. If I remember correctly this was told would happen when BP poured all that corexit in the gulf stream.so no surprises here.

another global temps graphic, this one opts for a view from above the polar cap:

this perspective shows how the colder-than-norm swaths, (that i’d thought were on opposite sides of the world), are actually connected

If we try to correlate and understand the types of natural disasters occurring throughout the world, we can figure out and draw an end to end conclusion. If something is cyclical, it will happen, since it happened throughout ages. Question is are we able to digest the truth? We need open eyes with Mind, heavenly bodies takes months to come in full swing rather than days.

Also are we undermining the forces of nature, like Moon. If it has an impact on entire Oceans/seas, then why it can’t have an impact on Clouds carrying water. Why is it always from East to West, can be figured out by Moon’s revolution around earth. We might need a bit help of Astrology over here, to understand complete life cycle..
