Iceland’s lava field now extends 33 square miles: Why are Earth’s volcanoes suddenly oozing so much lava?

Ring of Fire
January 2015HAWAIIThe Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports an active breakout of the Kilauea Volcano lava flow that began June 27 advanced about 120 yards toward Highway 130. An update Saturday from the Hawaii County Civil Defense said the original flow front and south margin breakout remain stalled. However, a breakout along the north side of the flow remains active and has advanced down slope below an area near the stalled front. The leading edge of the breakout was 0.4 miles from Highway 130 and west of the Pahoa police and fire stations. The Civil Defense agency says dry weather is likely to keep brush fires a concern. –Fox 8
Tonga underwater volcano creates new island: A Tongan volcano has created a substantial new island since it began erupting last month, spewing out huge volumes of rock and dense ash that has killed nearby vegetation, officials said on Friday. The volcano, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of the South Pacific nation’s capital Nuku’alofa, rumbled to life on December 20 for the first time in five years, the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry said. It said the volcano was erupting from two vents, one on the uninhabited island of Hunga Ha’apai and the other underwater about 100 meters (328 feet) offshore.
The ministry said experts took a boat trip to view the eruption on Thursday and confirmed it had transformed the local landscape. “The new island is more than one kilometer (0.6 mile) wide, two kilometers (1.2 miles) long and about 100 meters (328 feet) high,” it said in a statement. “During our observations the volcano was erupting about every five minutes to a height of about 400 meters (1,312 feet), accompanied by some large rocks… as the ash is very wet, most is being deposited close to the vent, building up the new island.”
It said ash and acidic rain was deluging an area 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) around the volcano, adding: “Leaves on trees on Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai have died, probably caused by volcanic ash and gases.” A number of international flights were cancelled earlier this week amid concerns about the volcano’s ash plume but they resumed on Wednesday, with authorities saying debris from the eruption was not being thrown high into the atmosphere. “Tonga, which is almost 2,000 kilometers (1,243 miles) northeast of New Zealand, lies on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where continental plates collide causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity. –Discovery News
Iceland volcano still erupting: Five months after it sparked fears of aviation disruption in Europe, this aerial footage shows the Bardarbunga volcano in Iceland continuing to magnificently erupt. Seismic activity from the volcano has continued since August last year, with small earthquakes occurring daily in the area, according to a report by the Icelandic Met Office. The Holuhraun lava field is now around 85 square kilometers (33 square miles), NASA has said.
It is Iceland’s largest baslatic lava flow since the Laki eruption in 1783-1784, with lava flowing at an estimated 50 to 70 cubic meters per second over the last few weeks. High levels of sulphuric dioxide are still being recorded in the area, which has triggered evacuations of villages. Air exclusion zones were put in place when the volcano first began to erupt on 27 August. In 2010, an ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano closed much of Europe’s air space for six days. –Sky News

I don’t know why? Why do you think there is a lot of lava flowing. I guess the answer is there is a lot of tectonic plate movements going on. Or, maybe the earth’s inner core is heating up. But, then you have to ask, why is the earth’s inner core heating up and is that contributing to tectonic plate movement? Of course, it seems like this lava flow might contribute to global warming. 2014 was reported as the hottest year on record. Russian scientists are predicting global cooling, but American scientists are predicting global warming. I guess it can work both ways. Lava flows initially create global warming, but then as volcanic dust blocks the sun, global cooling would kick in. Maybe that’s why they call it climate change. It’s both global warming and global cooling alternating back and forth….

“2014 was reported as the hottest year on record”. NO. IT WAS NOT. Then again, it depends who’s “record” we’re going by, doesn’t it? EVERY YEAR is being recorded as “the hottest year on record” by NASA, since they have abandoned manned space flight and are now in the “global warmi… err “climate change” business, slinging carbon credits and stacking cash until the rubber band pops with the IPCC.

Medieval times were much, much hotter on average than now… the IPCC stopped recording right after that period for some strange rea$$$on. Look at a chart of average world temps and there have been ice ages and centuries long warming periods that were a hell of a lot hotter than anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes.. Even “extreme” weather we have now is pretty tame and ordinary in the big picture of the earth’s history.

But ya’ know what? THE SKY IS FALLING AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO RAISE TAXES TO HELP SAVE THE WORLD AGAIN — so saith the UN.

“Science” says so. Lopsided, UN funded “science” that has already proven itself to be completely criminal in every way, shape and form. But then, who is going to call the UN out on their lies? Who is going to step in when the UN decides to bend everyone over the barrel and lie in their face?

Whenever big brother burns everyone and tells them that it’s for “their own good”, people go for it. Comfortable lies are easier to believe than uncomfortable truths and in the end, everyone gets what they deserve.

So the next time you’re seeing record snowfall and deep freezes, just remember that it’s because of global warmi… err “climate change”. The climate has only started changing the last few years and it’s only changing because we don’t have enough nuclear reactors.

The government is going to have to penalize us by (you guessed it) raising taxes again. It’s for our own safety. The “war on climate change”, “war on drugs” and the “war on terror” are being waged to keep us safe.

      They always are, aren’t they?

Interesting, I checked and Iceland and Tonga are pretty close to being right across the planet from each other.

Alaska Volcano Observatory has been keeping a Level Orange watch on Shishaldin (Kenai Peninsula) since last March… nothing dramatic so far, but looks like activity has been gradually increasing for about a year

  4. 3 million underwater volcanoes. One should understand that the continents are BILLIONS of years old whereas the ocean floors are mere MILLIONS. They’re also much thinner. Hence, the ice age: warming oceans cause more precipitation, causing (more) clouds to reflect sunlight. Eventually ice and snow will do the same, cycling towards a self-sustaining global cold that’s, ironically, set in motion by WARMER oceans.
The cause? There are different theories but the fact that all of the planets in our solar system have been warming up suggests that the cause is cosmological, for sure.
If you haven’t understood the ice age yet, i suggest you look up Red Ice Radio’s interview with Robert Felix. He will explain that not one or two, but 3 ice age cycles are set to come around at this point in time. The water has come and much more cold is coming. This is good news for some parts of the world and disastrous for others.

Volcano Discovery just posted this (very cautiously hopeful) prediction
    http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/bardarbunga/seismic-crisis-2014/updates.html

“According to Icelandic volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson, it is reasonable to predict that the eruption might be ending in March this year.
This audacious prediction is based on extrapolating the observed ongoing slow subsidence (“collapse”) of the central volcano’s caldera floor, located under 800 m of ice, and assuming that it is a direct indicator of the magma erupted at the Holuhraun fissure.

The underlying model is based on a number of assumptions:
    – magma from the reservoir underneath the caldera is drained through a 50 km long underground “tunnel” (more likely a fissure-like feature) to the eruption site
    – the evacuated volume corresponds more or less to the one erupted.
    – the subsidence of the caldera is a result of pressure adjustment in the magma chamber. Once the pressure in the magma chamber reaches a balance (equals out with lithostatic pressure, i.e. the weight of the overlying rocks and ice), the caldera subsidence and supply of magma to the eruption site would stop.
    – the observed rate of subsidence is amazingly regular and therefore it is reasonable that it can be extrapolated using a best-fit mathematical curve.

Using this approach, the rate of caldera subsidence is modeled as a simple square-function curve that flattens out in March. That would imply a pressure equilibrium in the magma chamber and the end of magma supply, hence the end of the eruption…

The volcano and time will tell whether this prediction holds! “

I get alerts when quakes and volcanos go off and over the past 2 weeks, 10-15 countries have been erupting with volcanoes and quite often only minutes apart and they seem to be in a row. I also noticed, what used to be 4.5 quakes, there are none that low, now they all seem to range from 5.0 – 8.0 and you know what? NONE OF THEM ARE ON THE NEWS. I find multiple volcanos very much a matter of interest. They certainly pick and choose what garbage goes on the news.

We live in a world of change. Islands rise, islands sink.
However, I did read a report that toxic fumes from the eruption in Iceland was causing some respiratory problems in the country and others as it is carried by the wind.

@Alvin, trying to understand all these phenomena. At this rate it might take few decades to actually alter something drastically on the face of the earth. I feel it is going at a slow and steady pace to show any affect immediately or in near future. What is your take on this?

    • The planet is becoming more geologically active. Look at the number of volcanic systems erupting and staying active. It’s mind-boggling.

I recently read a report “explaining” that the “pause” found that warming is on hold until the warm mid-ocean water rises, and then, BANG! “Global warming” says the experts. Zero explanation of how the warm got to the middle while surface water just conducted it down and stays cool/cold. (Really, and straight-faced to boot).
Afraid of losing their grants to show that real science says that huge and new methane and CO2 leaks from ocean floor, uh, maybe volcanic heat too?, adds to any potential warming more than our collective stoves, cars, cigs, whatever.
Such ego (not to mention flat-out, against-all-known-science) to say WE can heat a planet. Puleeze!

The reason is that when the suns activity declines as it goes into a solar minimum (as is happening now) the solar wind is weaker and doesn’t push away as much cosmic radiation as usual.
Cosmic rays are sub atomic particles called muons that have about 104 times the mass of an electron.
These particles penetrate about a kilometre into the earth, as they pass through magma they excite the atoms they crash into causing a change of state from liquid to gaseous. This increases the magmatic pressure which is released by venting at the surface.
