Ebola doctors at breaking point – a major wave of infections is about to wash everything away

October 2014AFRICAAt 3:30 a.m. in the world’s biggest Ebola treatment center, Daniel Lucey found the outbreak reduced to its essentials: patients lying on mattresses on the floor and vomiting in the dark, visible only by the wavering flashlight beam of a single volunteer doctor.  “I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Lucey, a physician and professor from Georgetown University who is halfway through a five-week tour in Liberia with Medecins Sans Frontieres, the medical charity known in English as Doctors Without Borders. “The epidemic is still getting worse,” he said by phone between shifts. That’s an increasingly urgent challenge for MSF and the global health community. As fear spreads in the U.S. over transmission of the virus to two nurses in a modern Dallas hospital, the main fight against the outbreak is still being waged by volunteers like Lucey half a world away.
MSF has been the first — and often only — line of defense against Ebola in West Africa. The group raised the alarm on March 31, months ahead of the World Health Organization. Now, after treating almost a third of the roughly 9,000 confirmed Ebola cases in Africa — and faced with a WHO warning of perhaps 10,000 new infections a week by December — MSF is reaching its limits. “They are at the breaking point,” said Vinh-Kim Nguyen, a professor at the School of Public Health at the University of Montreal who has volunteered for a West African tour with MSF in a few weeks. MSF has already seen 21 workers infected and 12 people die, and “there’s a sense that there’s a major wave of infections that’s about to wash everything away,” Nguyen said. –Bloomberg
South Korean aid workers exposed to Ebola: South Korean aid workers in West Africa have been exposed to the deadly Ebola virus due to a lack of protective wear and medical equipment, a lawmaker claimed Tuesday. A total of 102 South Korean aid workers have been living in West African countries, including Senegal and Cameroon, without proper protection from the epidemic, Rep. Kim Jae-won of the ruling Saenuri Party said, citing data from the government’s official development assistance body, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). –Yonhap News

Lets hope that when these wonderful volunteers and hard working nurses and Doctors return to their country of origin, they go to a quarantine station to wait out ONE MONTH before they even think about boarding a plane. This is where they stuff up. A temperature taken at the airport is no indication whatsoever if a person is carrying the disease, that is ludicrous to think they even use the word ‘assess’ while pushing through a queue anxious passengers waiting to board a plane. I still believe that STOPPING aircraft travel is the only way to keep it contained and we will just have to put up with consequences of that, and there are many.

What about the many Cuban doctors who have been helping – there is virtually no news about them or their work . . .

So, Doctors Without Borders is a CIA front operation like Samaritan’s Purse… telling lies and hyping ebola??

MSF volunteers are right there in the thick of it, fighting to save lives and giving up many of their own in the process. Does that seem like the same M.O.?

Knowing the political motto of never letting a good crisis go to waste. My understanding from what I have seen and heard tells me that people like Obama and his cronies are going to make sure they use this crisis to the max at the expense of Africa and the American people.
It appears more and more that Obama lunacy is a permeated attack to infect and kill Americans. What do you want to do? Rant or seek to become united with other like minded individuals and organize? The only way to handle this is through numbers. People need to organize, only then do they have the power to demand change.

Does anyone know right from wrong? The only way to handle Ebola is to isolate it. (Stop it before it comes into the country).
The bottom line is that not closing the borders and allowing open flights to come into the US from countries infected with …Ebola, plus risking the lives of over 4000 of our solders sending them to play nurse is not only wrong it is criminal. Risking the lives of millions of people while playing politics rather than protecting the people is wrong and criminal. I am tired of this political BS, lying to the people and will call it what it is. Wrong and criminal. These politicians need to be held accountable if there is a pandemic in this country because of their foolish games. It is time for the people to make a stand. Unless you draw a red line to stop this miss use of power these politicians will own you. When these people who run the country find out they are going to be held accountable lets see how long it takes them to do the things needed for the protection of the people.

From what we hear from Ghana, those American soldiers/National Guards are there to make sure the men who were on strike are back working in the diamond mines and oil resources.

None of the reporters have protective gear. Cameras abound. Sooo staged!

    • Why are you assuming they’re being interviewed after they’ve treated patients and not before? Do anyone really think any reporter in the world would be stupid enough to stand that close to an infected case worker after they came out of a treatment center?

I certainly hope so. This isn’t the 1st time we see people without protective suits in the midst of a photo shot.

msf volunteers have talked freely about slipping and sliding inside the suits and barely being able to see or breathe because of all the heat & sweat…must be terribly difficult to give a proper interview, all suited up like.
