7.3 magnitude earthquake strikes off coast of El Salvador killing 1

October 2014 – EL SALVADOR – A powerful 7.4-magnitude quake shook the Pacific coast of Central America on Tuesday, causing some damage and killing at least one person in El Salvador. The quake was deep (40 kilometers or 24 miles) but close to El Salvador’s shoreline — about 64 kilometers from the municipality of Intipuca. El Salvador’s Ministry of Weather and Natural Resources initially issued a tsunami warning for the coastal regions, saying the quake was felt throughout the country. It later downgraded it to a tsunami alert. The quake was later downgraded to a 7.3 by the USGS.

The mayor of San Miguel tweeted some photos that showed light structural damage to the local hospital. Crews responded to at least 12 collapsed homes. Power to the city was knocked out, but has been largely restored. At least one death was reported in San Miguel. A woman was killed when an electrical utility pole fell on her, Mayor Will Salgado said. –CNN

slightly off topic- here’s some more US Pacific Coast Drought news: now that Emigrant Lake Reservoir (Ashland OR) has just about completely dried up, there is finally some belated public pronouncements that California’s legendary drought does NOT end at its political northern border

This year’s drought has drained Emigrant Lake, near Ashland in southern Oregon, of about 90 percent of its water, leaving boat ramps dry, turning the lake bed into a mucky plain and revealing building foundations, debris and scattered tools at the site…”

The pacific side of Nicaragua has remained under “yellow alert” since this earthquake which means schools are suspended until further notice and more police are out and about. Just a few minutes ago the national news, Canal 15, said that INETER (which monitors the volcanoes, weather, and seismicity of the country), is advising the public to expect a major intensity earthquake in the near future. For us, life goes on as normal because we homeschool, but my daughter continues to have much fear and trouble going to sleep at night. We are fairly well prepared to stay or leave, but I can’t promise my children that “nothing bad will happen.” We have to trust The Lord and pray that we remain faithful to Him…no matter what.
