Dallas Ebola patient originally sent home with antibiotics: misdiagnosis exposed countless others to virus

October 2014 DALLAS,TX A Dallas hospital gave a man antibiotics and sent him home – only for him to be admitted two days later, it has been reported. Federal health officials later confirmed he has the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the US. The unidentified patient has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, officials said. Dallas patient diagnosed with Ebola was initially dismissed with prescription for antibiotics,’ CBS DFW tweeted. The man recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas. Dr. Edward Goodman told Dallas News ‘it does not appear the man went to any other hospitals in the area,’ website said. Scott Gordon, a reporter for KXAS, tweeted ‘Hospital reviewing why patient wasn’t properly diagnosed on Friday when he was evaluated and sent home. Dismissed with antibiotics.’ Other precautions have been taken since the case of the Ebola virus was confirmed. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings told CBS DFW ‘We have isolated quarantined both [the ambulance crew that took the patient to the hospital] and the unit itself to make sure that nothing was there that can be spread and we’re going about. We kind of – our protocol, how to do that – we’ve created an emergency center at the Dallas City Hall and they’re going to go through those protocols right now, so we’re taking all precautions to make sure everybody’s safe.’
‘First and foremost, we gotta have our thoughts and prayers for this man, who is very sick and hopefully he’ll get well,’ Rawlings continued. But we’re gonna sure everybody else is safe at the same time.’ Health authorities have begun tracking down family and friends who may have had close contact with the patient and could be at risk for becoming ill. But officials said there are no other suspected cases in Texas. At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Tom Frieden said the patient left Liberia on Sept. 19, arrived the next day to visit family and started feeling ill four or five days later. He said it was not clear how the person became infected. Frieden said there was no risk to anyone on the airplane because the patient had no symptoms at the time of the flight. –Daily Mail

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS—-DID THE PATIENT NOT TELL THEM HE CAME FROM AN EBOLA COUNTRY—-so how many did he infect sitting in the waiting room—-nurses, doctors, cleaning staff ,etc—-then home 2 days to infect a pile more people……IDIOTS—-ALL OF THEM…….

According to Fox News he did not tell them that he had just come in from West Liberia.

Drudge has an article up on the patient. Both patient and his sister said that he told the first ER that he came from Liberia. Maybe the ER paper-filler-outer didn’t know where Liberia is located or they are not familiar with Ebola.

This guy did report this info. Read updated info. His sister says when they asked for his SS#, he told them he was visiting from Liberia. At all ER intake desks they enter patient info as data in the system. If medical personnel failed to fully read this guys Intake bio…they were at fault. Were they trying to pass the blame on “the nurse”? The hospital has rephrased their initial statement about the “nurse failing to inform”.

according to his sister, he did tell them:

“On Sept. 26, he sought treatment at the hospital… Duncan’s sister, Mai Wureh, said HE NOTIFIED OFFICIALS THAT HE WAS VISITING FROM LIBERIA when they asked for his Social Security number and he told them he didn’t have one.” -US TODAY

plus, the sister’s family is part of a large Liberian community there in East Dallas- no mystery that. It’s just folks failed to connect the dots 😦

Was his anti-biotic an RX prescription he had to fill at a pharmacy? Was his visit welcomed by a host of family & friends? Was there a big dinner gathering? Did he bring gifts /items for others? How many family/friends did he hug/embrace/shake hands with.
Did he visit a local African food store/restaurant?

How often is this happening at other international airports around the country . Years ago I met some friends returning from Africa at JFK airport years ago. The disembarking passenger lines were endless & slow. It resembled a safari with all sorts of hand carried bags, luggage, items!…along with folks waiting to greet them.

All direct/connecting flights from the affected area should be suspended OR all passengers screened & isolated. This is very bad.

Again notice the respirator oxygen packs worn by medical staff transporting this victim.
Always heard that cold germs/virus infects others even before the “carrier” has obvious symptoms. That once a person “catches” the cold …others have already been infected along the way.

What do they know & aren’t telling the public?

if there is some small mercy in all this, it is that unlike flu, ebola actually is not infectious during its incubation period. Infectiousness coincides with sudden onset of fever, its first symptom.
So none of the folks he encountered prior to 9/24 (when he first fell ill) need to worry. But all the folks he had contact with from 9/24 forward do…

yes. this may be a natural epidemic or the latest ‘smallpox blanket’ to be spread across the land. regardless, panic will only make the outcome worse.

Flu season is just around the corner what a mess we’re into now how many cases will be flu how many will not be but will be sent home as the flu. I think our Dr’s are how do you say like everyone else ignorant to the fact that we’re not exempt to this disease

This is highly alarming and is happening way too fast. If this spreads beyond Texas we’re all in very deep trouble. If there is a higher power, may that higher power help us all.

Why isn’t the US automatically checking passengers that fly in from Ebola stricken countries?
Shouldn’t one of the first questions out of every healthcare worker in all US hospitals be “Have you recently been to Africa?”

So the same health care pros. that sent a person who arrived here from Liberia home with antibiotics now has everything under control.
Great. Now perhaps they can tell us how many others were exposed while the patient waited fro those antibiotics. How many were exposed in the 4 days that person was ill?
Why are we taking NO steps to protect Americans?
Why are our borders open and flights from infected countries allowed?
It is obvious that a simple temperature check is not enough, given an up to 21 days window before symptoms show.
Will we just check the temps. on our 3,000 troops who just went “door to door” in a hot zone, when they fly home?

We all wonder how the ER missed this, but here is a man who just came from a country in the middle of the ebola epidemic and he has symptoms that warrant him to want to go to ER. Did he (or his family) tell the staff/doctors where he was less than a week before the ER visit and that he may have been exposed to ebola? I think if the words Liberia or ebola came out of his mouth during that ER visit, the reaction of hospital staff would of been vastly different. And btw .. I’m not in the health care profession. Just a resident of Dallas that could have easily been beside this man anywhere – in the ER, store, airport, etc. This isn’t about visas or immigrant status, this is about life and death. I understand the CDC wanting to project calm and avoid panic, but they don’t have chance of containing this as long as people are not completely honest with the very people they are expecting help from.

So .. since when have people been completely honest??! What a crock!

This is… the end of the world as we know it. Get used to getting constructive and productive.

UNTRUE that “Frieden said there was no risk to anyone on the airplane because the patient had no symptoms at the time of the flight.” They do not fully understand the VIrus or how it mutates so how can they say there was no risk to anyone on the airplane. And notice this choice of words, “….I have no doubt we will control ebola, so ebola does not spread WIDELY in the United States”. in other words its coming, it’s here, it’s gonna spread…. hopefully not widely.

Pray for this man, his family, those who have died, are dying, those exposed and those who will be. Pray we don’t lose the bulk of our Medical Staff and those looking for a cure who are exposed because then we are totally screwed.

All flights and passengers are monitored where they are coming from/going!! Africa should be a no fly zone to and from these areas!! You don’t let random African travelers into the country!!! This goes back to our border not being secure, our intelligence being ignored, and if this goes beyond 2 people… good bye USA. In fact the arrogant doctors of the CDC saying everything is under control is a joke. Nothing is in control, the fact is this contagious person went home was in contact with multiple people, all of whom are not known, as those he came into contact with also contacted others. Furthermore this second person has a live he had live prior as well. The spread if not stopped at 2 will be exponential!!

It should not be exponential. It certainly hasn’t been in Africa. Now if the Virus was airborn then it could have the potential to spread exponentially.

First off, there should be a *NO* flights coming out of Africa, period. We’re talking a complete lock-down, particularly in countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and at this point I’d be weary even of Nigeria and neighboring countries because infected people can and will cross borders. We’re not talking about a serious flu strain, this is a contagious disease with a 90% morality rate that has NO VACCINE, NO TREATMENT, NO CURE. What happens when (not if!) it mutates and becomes airborne? This has the real potential to become an extinction level event for humans.

I think we’ve past the point of no return for Africa, I don’t know what can be done now except hope it burns itself out by being contained. If the Ebola virus spreads elsewhere, it will never burn out, it will just keep spreading and mutating. The fact that someone has brought it to the United States has brought us to a new turning point, one that we will have to wait out and see.

If it’s contained to just this one person, and no one else in Texas is infected after 30-60 days, we’re OK. If on the other hand, multiple people have been infected (without even knowing it!) and exponentially are spreading Ebola around as we speak….well, we’re going to be facing a nightmare situation, something unlike anything every before experienced in recorded history.

Problem is until flight travel out of Africa is immediately suspended, there is potential for this Texas situation to happen all over the world. Remember, it only takes one undetected person to allow this to spread like wildfire. JUST ONE.
