Unthinkable to reality: first Ebola case diagnosed in the United States – CDC vows to prevent an ‘outbreak’ in Dallas

September 2014 DALLAS, TXU.S. health officials said on Tuesday the first patient infected with the deadly Ebola virus had been diagnosed in the country, in a new sign of how the outbreak ravaging West Africa can spread globally. The patient had recently traveled to West Africa and developed symptoms several days after returning to Texas, state officials said. The patient was admitted to an isolation room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the diagnosis. U.S. health officials and lawmakers have been bracing for the eventuality that a patient would arrive on U.S. shores undetected, testing the preparedness of the nation’s healthcare system. The Texas Department of State Health Services said it was working with the CDC, the local health department and the hospital “to investigate the case and help prevent transmission of the disease. The hospital has implemented infection control measures to help ensure the safety of patients and staff,” the statement said. U.S. hospitals have treated several patients who were diagnosed with Ebola in West Africa, the center of the worst known outbreak of the virus that has killed more than 3,000 people.
The previous U.S. patients were all medical and other aid workers who were diagnosed while still in West Africa. Ebola symptoms generally appear between two and 21 days after infection, meaning there is a significant window during which an infected person can escape detection, allowing them to travel. CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden has said U.S. hospitals are well prepared to handle Ebola patients and has assured the public that the virus should not pose the same threat in the United States as it does in Africa. Stocks in small biotechnology companies working on Ebola therapies or vaccines rose on the news of the U.S. Ebola patient in after-hours trading. –Reuters
CDC vows to stop the virus: The first Ebola case has been diagnosed in the United States, but a top health official said there is “no doubt… we will stop it here.” Dr. Tom Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the patient left Liberia on Sept 10 and arrived in the U.S. on Sept. 20. The patient sought medical help on Sept. 27 and was put in isolation on Sept. 28, Frieden said. Tests confirming the Ebola diagnosis came back today. Frieden stressed that the patient was not sick on departure from Liberia or upon arrival in the U.S. and the disease can only be contracted by someone exhibiting symptoms of the disease. Frieden said he was confident there would not be an Ebola outbreak in the U.S. “There is no doubt in my mind we will stop it here,” he said. –ABC News

How did he get here. Commercial plane? There are hundreds if not thousands that could be sick from exposure. Airplane + coughing + sex/fluids + + + = _/\_/\________

I bet that the folks on that airplane are worried……..and perhaps we should too.
Because, who knows how many he touched or sneezed about.

Not all hospitals in the US are preparing to receive Ebola patients. Some are declining and are prepared not to accept Ebola patients .

If it takes such direct contact with other people to get this AND they must already be showing signs of the sickness to be contagious AND he was not there as a medical assistant then he knows from where he got it [ for with what we are being told he had to be intimate with people he knew were sick] or we all got fooled again…There is something horribly wrong with what the media is being fed! either we are being lied to or doctors are stupid.

If someone has a fever and does not know they have Ebola but just are not feeling well…and they open a door in a public place with their sweaty hand…would that be considered bodily fluid that could contain an Ebola virus or three? to be touched by another seconds later? just asking..

Yes, the virus has been found in sweat. It can survive for weeks in blood.
One study says “Zaire ebolavirus (ZEBOV) can survive for long periods in different liquid media and can also be recovered from plastic and glass surfaces at low temperatures for over 3 weeks”… http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20553340

thanks DJ… This confirms my suspicions…The doctor’s are not outright lying…Just not telling the real truth ; yet this will end up making more of a panic than the real truth would. Keep praying everyone; this looks like a bumpy ride and the health care bubble in USA is about to burst like I mentioned a couple of years ago.

SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DISINFECTANTS: Ebolavirus is susceptible to 3% acetic acid, 1% glutaraldehyde, alcohol-based products, and dilutions (1:10-1:100 for ≥10 minutes) of 5.25% household bleach (sodium hypochlorite), and calcium hypochlorite (bleach powder) Footnote 48 Footnote 49 Footnote 50 Footnote 62 Footnote 63. The WHO recommendations for cleaning up spills of blood or body fluids suggest flooding the area with a 1:10 dilutions of 5.25% household bleach for 10 minutes for surfaces that can tolerate stronger bleach solutions (e.g., cement, metal) Footnote 62. For surfaces that may corrode or discolour, they recommend careful cleaning to remove visible stains followed by contact with a 1:100 dilution of 5.25% household bleach for more than 10 minutes.

PHYSICAL INACTIVATION: Ebola are moderately thermolabile and can be inactivated by heating for 30 minutes to 60 minutes at 60°C, boiling for 5 minutes, or gamma irradiation (1.2 x106 rads to 1.27 x106 rads) combined with 1% glutaraldehyde Footnote 10 Footnote 48 Footnote 50. Ebolavirus has also been determined to be moderately sensitive to UVC radiation Footnote 51.

SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: Filoviruses have been reported capable to survive for weeks in blood and can also survive on contaminated surfaces, particularly at low temperatures (4°C) Footnote 52 Footnote 61. One study could not recover any Ebolavirus from experimentally contaminated surfaces (plastic, metal or glass) at room temperature Footnote 61. In another study, Ebolavirus dried onto glass, polymeric silicone rubber, or painted aluminum alloy is able to survive in the dark for several hours under ambient conditions (between 20 and 250C and 30–40% relative humidity) (amount of virus reduced to 37% after 15.4 hours), but is less stable than some other viral hemorrhagic fevers (Lassa) Footnote 53. When dried in tissue culture media onto glass and stored at 4 °C, Zaire ebolavirus survived for over 50 days Footnote 61. This information is based on experimental findings only and not based on observations in nature. This information is intended to be used to support local risk assessments in a laboratory setting.

SO… Ebolavirus is rather heat sensitive (good), can be destroyed by baking or boiling (good), but survives nicely at winter temps (NOT good). can be destroyed from surfaces using a number of household disinfectants (good) such as Vinegar, Vodka, Tequila, Bleach, Alcohol-based hand cleaners. but (NOT good) it survives for weeks in blood and tissue culture. however, it is less stable (Good) than other viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa.

historians have said the european Great Plague was most likely another hemorrhagic fever.
it is recorded that it became common among grave diggers to wear headwraps soaked in vinegar (as the sharp scent was believed to dispel the ‘miasma’). many of them survived.
additionally i have read of a woman, the wife of a grave digger, who daily washed every surface in their home and soaked her own laundry in vinegar.
        plague passed their home by.

And yet the government is doing nothing. According to news reports, Obama has missed half of his national security briefings while the world spirals out of control. The government didn’t secure the borders let alone the White House, prevent air travel from Africa, quarantine people etc. A woman was beheaded at work by a Muslim terrorist, but yet it’s being called work place violence. Uprising of ISIS. Something is up. Population control? The ushering in of the one world government? Marshall Law before the next presidential election? These times we live in only get more frightening with each headline. Felt another earthquake today. And I live in Oklahoma. Never had them growing up. Volcanoes are erupting everywhere. Alvin, what do you think?

Hey, Kim, you touch on some things that raise a relevant question; even though the patient traveled to West Africa and returned with the virus, if the US gov’t is not serious about securing the southern border during these interesting times . . . what did THEY think was going to happen?

The government is doing exactly what their script tells them to do. There’s no telling how many people this patient has come into contact with. This could spread exponentially. Best to take matters and your family’s health into your own hands and prepare (just in case) for a self imposed lockdown. Better to be prepared and never need it than to be unprepared and helpless. Food, water, medical supplies need to be top priority (after prayers of course). Martial law, involuntary quarentine could be in our immediate future.

I find it beyond belief that the authorities let a person carrying this disease enter the country and mingle with the general population. At the very least anyone who has traveled through or from west Africa should be quarantined at the point of entry (eg airport) for the incubation time of the disease. Let’s hope they’re right when they say there’s nothing to worry about. Time to get serious about border protection.

September 19: Patient boards flight to the U.S. in Liberia after being screened for Ebola symptoms
September 20: The patient arrives in the United States- no signs of illness yet
SEPTEMBER 24: PATIENT SHOWS FIRST SYMPTOMS OF EBOLA
SEPTEMBER 26: Patient seeks medical care- BUT IS SENT HOME…
SEPTEMBER 28: Patient admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas- IN ISOLATION
September 30: LAB CONFIRMS patient has Ebola…

Reports indicate all family members the man was with are being monitored. Once he began feeling ill, chances are he stayed home in bed, so not highly likely to have infected random strangers (although of course a possibility) What has not been said however, is whether all health workers etc who came into contact with this man during first hospital visit 9/26 are being monitored as well. Thats the gap im feeling most concern about.

It was only a matter of time – Now it’s here. The patient wasn’t feeling well a few days after arriving, went to a hospital, but was sent home because his symptoms were “undefined” – meaning they figured he had a simple virus. Apoarently they did not inquire about his latest travel, which should have triggered alarm bells… So much for their preparedness… 2 days later he returns to the hospital and is placed in isolation. How many he infected in that time is anyone’s guess…
