Ebola virus: new aid worker attack in Sierra Leone amid curfew – thousands cross the border into neighboring countries

September 2014FREETOWN, Africa – Health-care workers in a village east of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, came under attack Saturday while attempting to bury five victims of the deadly Ebola virus disease, according to a police official cited by the Associated Press. Nevertheless, the attacks in the village of Waterloo did not derail a government effort to contain the virus through house-to-house inspections. Volunteers carrying out the inspections have reported that, by and large, most Sierra Leoneans have obeyed government orders to remain at home through Sunday evening. Sierra Leone, a small, impoverished West African nation seeking to emerge from decades of war and instability, has been among the countries most badly affected by the virus: Ebola has caused 560 deaths in the country, roughly one-fifth of the 2,600 fatalities registered in the region, as AP reported.
In their attempt to prevent the virus from spreading, government officials throughout the region have struggled to overcome insufficient medical equipment, poor transportation infrastructure and, occasionally, intransigence in the populations themselves. BBC News reported Thursday that villagers in Guinea, a nation bordering Sierra Leone, slaughtered eight Ebola aid workers in cold blood. Ebola is one of the world’s deadliest diseases, with roughly one-half of those infected in West Africa since December having died. U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged to rally support for combating Ebola when world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly meeting this week. And, last week, the president announced he would dispatch 3,000 American troops to the region, marking the first time a U.S. president has promised military assistance to fight a disease outbreak in Africa. –IB Times
Could lead to the collapse of 3 countries: West Africa’s Ebola epidemic threatens the “collapse” of three entire states, a Liberian minister has warned. Speaking exclusively to The Independent on Sunday, information minister Lewis Brown said that the international media had failed to “appreciate” the scale of an epidemic that has gone beyond a health crisis to threaten “every aspect of [Liberia’s] national existence. People need to understand, what we are dealing with has the potential to collapse our three countries,” he said, referring to Liberia and neighboring Guinea and Sierra Leone. “Liberia was in its 11th year of peace. We experienced, because of our war, a 90 per cent collapse in the productive sector of our economy, we were rebuilding and our health infrastructure was not what it should have been. We were just bringing back hope and life when we were struck by Ebola. It is having terrible consequences for every aspect of our national existence.”
Only around 40 per cent of the country’s healthcare facilities were functioning, he said, all schools are closed, and an entire farming season has been wasted in the agricultural regions in the country’s north-east, which were the first to record cases of Ebola. He said the international community’s response to the epidemic, which has claimed at least 2,622 lives, was now reaching the scale required. The US is sending 3,000 military personnel to West Africa. –Independent

What on earth are they still burying the bodies of infected Ebola patients for. This is NOT safe practice. They must be burned regardless of belief, religion or preference. Burning destroys the disease, burying allows the disease to resurface and begin again, when it rains, floods (virus washes up and into waterways on sits on surface ground or is unburied in years or centuries to come. They must be burned. Does no one know how to deal with a virulent fast spreading virus?

amazing that a virus can mind control people to defend itself from aid workers and force these unwitting victims to flee, and spread the deadly disease to neighbouring villages / countries. truly amazing powers of mind control from a virus, very impressive.

Ebola is now worrying the normally conservative non alarmist types. They finally may have woken up that this event is not just going to go away.
The current W.H.O. figures for infections and fatalities are meaningless. The authorities that be have completely lost control of the situation. The unofficial figures are at least 4 times probably more than the wild guesses of official ones.
I’m reminded of a quotation from a friend of mine who many years ago was an official in the British Colonial service in Sierra Leone. A well known saying in that part of Africa is WAWA. – West Africa Wins Always. This refers to the fact that whatever western or outside people try and do to effect the life in these countries is always thwarted by the local JuJu..
No amount of western military boots on the ground or outside health agencies will ever have an effect of whatever happens in West Africa – things will flow along the natural WAWA course – meaning the disease will either die out naturally or annihilate the population.

bone idle, i appreciate your explanation of WAWA. this helps me gain some understanding into an active dynamic which until now has been thoroughly baffling…. now i see why some things have made no sense (to me), and it is because they make no sense (at all). except within a matrix of contortions and confusions
similar to the effect of trying to form a coherent rationality from the logic governing in mental illness… frustratingly futile.
a thoroughly dark juju for sure

because of an unknown illness that broke out in the Expeditionary unit.
