WHO says Ebola will claim 20,000 lives in the next six months – exhibiting characteristics it could go pandemic

September 2014 AFRICA – The World Health Organization has issued a terrifying warning: Ebola will claim 20,000 lives within the next six months. The virus, which is spiraling out of control in Western Africa, has already claimed 2300 lives the international health body reports. More than half of that figure has died in the past 21 days alone. Originating in Guinea earlier this year, more than 4200 people have since been sickened in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. “As soon as a new Ebola treatment facility is opened, it immediately fills to overflowing with patients, pointing to a large but previously invisible caseload,” WHO said in a statement. “Many thousands of new cases are expected in Liberia over the coming three weeks.” A Doctors Withour Borders statement was equally blunt, saying the virus was moving “catastrophically through the population much faster than new facilities are being created.” A surge in Ebola infections in Liberia is driving the spiraling outbreak in West Africa that is increasingly putting health workers at risk as they struggle to treat an overwhelming number of patients. A higher proportion of health workers has been infected in this outbreak than in any previous one — an alarming indicator of diseases that can turn pandemic. The latest infection was of a doctor with the World Health Organization treating patients in Sierra Leone. The organization gave no details, but an American who became infected while working in West Africa landed in the US yesterday to get treatment at Emory University Hospital.
This is the second WHO staffer to be infected in Sierra Leone, and the UN health agency said Tuesday that after an investigation of the first case, staffers battling Ebola there now have better working conditions — including larger, more private quarters. The outbreak sweeping West Africa is thought to have killed more than 2300 people, and public health experts agree that it is out of control. The disease is spreading particularly quickly in Liberia, where WHO figures published last night showed that more than 500 new cases were recorded in just one week. The organization warned that it expects thousands of new cases in the country. Sierra Leone said it is also expecting to uncover potentially hundreds of new cases during a three-day nationwide lockdown later this month. While people are confined to their homes, thousands of volunteers will go house to house to search for those infected, Sidie Yahya Tunis, a Health Ministry spokesman said last night. There are only about 570 beds in specialist Ebola treatment centers in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The WHO says at least 1000 more are needed — especially in Liberia. Health officials have said quarantine measures — including flight bans and travel restrictions to infected areas — were serving to slow the flow of medical teams, aid and protective gear.
“If (protective equipment) is worn properly, there is no risk of infection,” said Dr. David Heymann, a professor at London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “Unfortunately, in the case of Ebola, a mistake can be fatal.” After a Senegalese epidemiologist with WHO working in Sierra Leone tested positive for Ebola last month, the agency conducted an investigation into how he became infected. While the agency is not releasing the results of the investigation, spokeswoman Nyka Alexander said Tuesday that staff living and working quarters in Sierra Leone have been expanded to make them less cramped and workers no longer share living space with other agencies. Changes were also made to working procedures, including more temperature checks for everyone coming into the WHO office and living quarters, Alexander said. –News

Why is the US not giving the serum that has supposely healed that American doctor and nurse? If the story was true and those people were really affected by Ebola, then the serum would be proof that it heals. This is going to get nasty and many will die. I am not sure what to believe anymore.

“Why is the US not giving the serum that has supposely healed that American doctor and nurse?”
Because there isn’t any more. We haven’t figure out how to mass produce it, and the seven people who it has been used on (3 of whom died anyway) exhausted the entire supply. It will be several months before more can be made. This stuff is being painstakingly made by hand in a lab after being grown in tobacco plants; that takes time. Serums like that used to be grown using horses (back to the Spanish Flu in 1918), which took a lot longer, so it’s getting better, but there is still a lot to learn.

Quote from above article : “already claimed 2300 lives the international health body reports. More than half of that figure has died in the past 21 days alone”.

This disease is growing exponentially. – 1100 deaths in 21 days. Their statement of estimate 20,000 deaths in six months might be more accurately stated as reached within two and one half months.
500 dead in the last week alone. The fatality rate is doubling weekly – you do the math.

I am just guessing on this. But, it seems like the next most logical place where Ebola will break out would be India within the next year or so. India is a hot equatorial region with forests, jungles, millions of people, open borders, uneducated people, primitive health care system, and the list could go on. From India, the ebola virus could move into Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Phillipines, and then from there it could theoretically move into China…the nation with the most people on the planet. From China, ebola would just take off in all directions around the globe.

This is just a guess….what are your guesses?

    • I think Asia and the Middle East are serious concerns. Microbes exploit huge migrations to spread themselves across the globe. The Spanish Flu influenza exploited troop movements across the globe in WW1 in 1918. Fast-forward to today – Case in point, 70,000 Nigerians have been issued visas for the Haj in Saudi Arabia

“Saudi Arabia has no plan to ban some 70,000 Nigerian pilgrims from performing Haj this year because of Ebola virus cases that have surfaced in the West African country, a senior Saudi health official said.” (Sept 8, 2014) Source: http://www.zawya.com/story/ZAWYA20140908035548/

When the virus does eventually breakout of Africa, it probably will come as a surprise to most.

yes, definitely. i believe the only reason this epidemic has been confined this long to West Africa (if, almost unbelievably, it really has), is because the locale is predominately so impoverished that there is very little air travel coming out of the central hot spots. the disease has mainly been “confined” by the fact that most of the sufferers so far have been too poor to travel by any means other than foot or a few rattle-trap autos & busses.

the exception that we (so far) know of is/was Patient 0 to Nigeria, bringing this horrible pestilence into a densely populated urban center that is relatively prosperous and far more mobile than the tragically poor slums and villages it was mostly confined to before. (at least thats my understanding of the region- please feel free to educate me if ive got it wrong) Anyway, ive been watching this thing grow for months, and especially foccussing on reports coming out of Lagos ever since it gained a foothold there.

for example, has anyone seen this report published this morning in a Nigerian paper?
      >>
      http://dailypost.ng/2014/09/11/breaking-liberian-ebola-patient-arrested-lagos-airport/
“DailyPost has just been informed that a South African woman identified as Folswe Elizabeth Maria has just been arrested at the Lagos International Airport after showing signs of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease.
Operatives at the airport arrested the woman when she disembarked from the Air Morok flight.
After a quick virus test was conducted on her, report says she showed positive result and was immediately arrested. She was from Casablanca in Morocco.
Our Airport source said she was quarantined and taken away almost immediately.”

If accurate, this one truly worries me as the woman, who tested positive for infection, had just arrived FROM a North African country far outside the known affected region. ive been suspecting for some time that there’s been a high level of “plausible deniability” in the official reports. this would seem to corroborate only too well 😦

Compare this to the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, it killed 5% of the worlds population – 100 million souls and reached every corner of the globe, even polar regions. We aren’t quite at that level even with 20,000 deaths, so no need for hysteria just yet.

However, the most concerning aspect of this virus is it’s rapid mutation, almost like it’s trying various combinations looking for the ideal state to survive and prosper in it’s new found host – us.

ive done some reading on the Spanish Flu, and also the mysterious “Sleeping Encephalitis” that was strongly associated with it. if i recall, that pandemic actually took years to run its course. no one had any idea how devastating it would ultimately prove to be, even as they were living & dying in it.
our generation has the benefit of hindsight which is nearly always sharper. please lets not make the mistake of crying “peace and safety” where there is none…. ebola has not YET arrived at the scale of the Spanish Flu, but GOD help us, all signs show that it may.
