If Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, two-thirds of America will be left uninhabitable

July 2014 MONTANA – Deep in America’s northwest, there lies a supervolcano that, if erupted, has the potential to wipe out the majority of the United States. What is a supervolcano exactly? I think the name says it all, but officially, scientists define it as a volcano capable of an eruption thousands of times greater than any ordinary volcanic explosion. These supervolcanoes burst when a growing pressure of molten rock, or magma, rises up from the Earth’s mantle. When the crust can’t contain the buildup anymore — boom. In historic times, we luckily haven’t experienced a supervolcano explosion. The most recent eruption occurred 27,000 years ago in New Zealand. But, mankind isn’t out of the woods yet. Deep below Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming lies a supervolcano that is very much alive.
A volcanic winter: A massive underground chamber filled with magma sits miles below the surface in America’s oldest national park. Though scientists are mixed as to whether the place could blow anytime soon, there is one thing they do agree on — if it did, it would push much of Earth to the verge of extinction. Its immediate effects would be deadly enough, with some estimates saying that 87,000 people would be killed instantly. A 10-foot layer of ash would spread up to 1,000 miles away, leaving two-thirds of the country completely uninhabitable. Once the plume rises high into the stratosphere, the released sulfuric gases would mix with the Earth’s water vapor, which National Geographic reports could launch the country and other parts of the globe into a “volcanic winter.” Essentially, the United States and much of the world would be brought to its knees.
Storm is ComingBut the carnage doesn’t stop there. The spread of volcanic ash, rocks and gas would immediately cease any sort of air transportation in much of the world. Just take into account the traffic shutdown following the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption in Iceland. The relatively small explosion caused the closure of large swaths of European airspace, as well as a six-day travel ban in the impacted area. Those who do survive would be left with a big bill too. Doug Bausch, a senior scientist at FEMA, told WND that such a scenario would cause an estimated $3 trillion in damage for North America. The last time Yellowstone erupted — roughly 640,000 years ago — the American continent was devastated, with volcanic materials reaching as far as Louisiana, over 1,500 miles away. In the past decade, there has been some increased activity at the site. Since 2004, the supervolcano has been rising and just this month, roads were closed in Yellowstone after extreme heat from below was melting the asphalt on roads up above.
An explosion of “volcanic winter” magnitude; however doesn’t seem likely according the U.S. Geological Survey. They say that the chances of a large-scale eruption at Yellowstone “are exceedingly small in the next few thousand years.” However other geologists told the Huffington Post in a 2014 interview: “The bulging pocket of magma swishing around beneath Old Faithful might never blow its lid again. Or, it might put on a surprise fireworks show next Independence Day. Scientists just don’t know.”  –RYOT

  1. I am thinking that we need to vent the monster.

That thought has been proposed to do that and rejected AND I thought that was a good idea. Where to vent it to?

      • Well, I am no scientist but I would think we could find a way to vent it high into the atmosphere. If it erupts, it will go there anyway. At least, it will not destroy most of America. LOL. Hugs, Barbara

Venting it would simply give the magma the exit it needs. You can’t stop nature.

        @Barbara
However, it won’t be just America affected by Yellowstone’s eruption, the world will also. America will face the brunt of the devastation, but the ash will gradually cover the planet blocking out the Sun. That will effect crop production and send this planet into a volcanic winter. It could last 6-10 years. Look into into the Mount Toba eruption for an idea of how that super volcano had a major effect on the planet.

The magma won’t reach the atmosphere, the ash will. Once that happens, it moves with the winds. The volcano’s magma will find a way to the surface somehow and any attempt to vent a volcano could likely cause a premature eruption. For lack of a better comparison, they’re like zits. The zits will burst on their own eventually, but popping them does it earlier.

No, I suppose we shouldn’t give up, but natural processes just happen. Nature and the universe doesn’t stop for any species. We can only brace ourselves as best we can.

Best wishes to you. Hugs, Leesha.

If you were to suspend a magnetic core in the centre of a jar of fluid, and if you were then to bring a magnet close to the jar, what would the core do? It would be either attracted to or repelled from the approaching magnetic field. The more viscous the fluid inside the jar, the greater the pressure on the outside of the jar. I wonder if this principle is behind solar flares and associated magmatic pressure?
After the magnetic influence is removed, how many times would the core oscillate back and forth through the jar’s (or Earth’s) centre until it reached it’s equilibrium?
Of course the rotation of the Earth would complicate the picture a little.

Plenty of rumors that there might be some action this year or the next. This is based on what has bee reported happening there and some reports are unclear and there are allegations that actual issues are being held back and its worst than being reported.

It’s always worse than what’s reported and also covered up. If they reported the true events, there would be mass panic. And think of all the man-made disasters that they brush off and water down for the public. Yellowstone’s eruption will be no different.

  7. I probably shouldn’t say anything, but it is this Yellowstone scenario I was thinking of when I wrote:

“At the moment of Creation, the Sun stands before the bow of
Sagittarius at the dark center of the Milky Way on the winter solstice.
We will pass Milky Way’s center “Vishnunabhi” (the Seat of Brahma)
while the latest incarnation of Lucifer finds himself by the very pit of
Hell. (Isaiah 14) Watch for a great ball of fire – or better yet, take cover.”
Possible date on the horizon? Look at Jupiter-Saturn in Capricorn 2020, Sun at Galactic Center.
And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved …

  10. Does this have anything to do with the fact, there are perennial fires in Ohio and other Eastern states, underground, that destroy whole towns? Does this have anything to do with effects of fracking? Does this have anything to do with the movement of earthquakes from one region to another? If so, Earth is about to experience a massive correction.

      Hi Emily
I grew up in one of the areas in Ohio where there are underground fires. The fires were started 117 years ago, in 1884. The coal miner’s union and the mining companies clashed. Some miners became so angry that they put timbers in coal cars, soaked them with oil, ignited them, and pushed them into the mine. The coal caught fire and no one was able to extinguish it. Millions of dollars worth of coal burned up. Reportedly, the coal seam was fourteen feet across and extended an undetermined distance into the Earth. It purportedly took several days for the fire to be discovered. By that point, it was too late to stop the fire’s spread. As a result of the fire, the mine closed. Over time, as the coal burnt out under the ground, roads collapsed and had to be replaced. There are several areas where you can see steam coming from wells on winter days.
      No volcano here! 😉

No to all of the above. Yellowstone sits atop a magma chamber and is not connected to underground fires in the Eastern states. Fracking began only recently, while the Yellowstone magma has been inching it’s way northeast for millennia (>2.4 million years). Earthquakes mostly occur on fault lines, not under volcanoes.

We should put some type of straw or something underground to let the magma flow out and into the ocean so it cools into rock it something cause then it would just drain out and wouldn’t keep building up with magma.

    • The more man tampers with the Earth, the more harm he does. What’s more puzzling is why does man erect habitats in regions he knows is dangerous. Birds don’t build their nest in nuclear plant cooling towers, and ground hogs don’t burrow tunnels in the San Andreas Fault.

Man is the only creature on this planet with a suicide complex and death wish…and then he is shock and horrified when disaster strikes.

It shows you just how disconnected we’ve become from the creation and ecology.

Recall Christ’s parable about the foolish man who built his house upon the sand and the wise man who built his house upon a rock – and the forces of nature assailed the house on the sand and it collapsed. This was a spiritual lesson as well as a precept about ecology. Matt 7:24-27.
