Vast ocean lays under Earth mantle, may be wellspring for world’s oceans

“In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up.” Genesis 7:11
June 2014 GEOLOGY – A reservoir of water lying deep under the Earth’s surface may contain triple the volume of every one the world’s oceans and may even be the “wellspring” source of them, U.S. researchers say. Although not in a liquid form most familiar to all of us — it is instead bound within rocks deep in the Earth’s mantle — it likely represents the largest reservoir of water on Earth, scientists at the University of New Mexico and Northwestern University say. Writing in the journal Science, they report finding pockets of melted magma 400 miles underneath the North American continent that are likely signatures that water exists at those depths. Scientists have long questioned whether the mantle, the rocky, hot layer between the Earth’s crust and its core, might contain water bound up and trapped within rare minerals. The new discovery is evidence water can be transported from the surface of the Earth to great depth by plate tectonics, the movement of continents and plates over the Earth’s surface. “Geological processes on the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes or erupting volcanoes, are an expression of what is going on inside the Earth, out of our sight,” says geophysicist and study co-author Steve Jacobsen at Northwestern. “I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet.” Movement and partial melting of rocks in the mantle’s transition zone — a region between the mantle’s lower and upper layers from around 250 to 400 miles deep — could allow water to become tightly bound to the minerals there, the researchers said.
To test if the transition zone could be a possible deep water reservoir, the researchers used seismic waves recorded during earthquakes to analyze the structure of the mantle in the zone and to detect if melting is taking place as tectonics drives rocks ever deeper. “If we are seeing this melting, then there has to be this water in the transition zone,” University of New Mexico seismologist Brandon Schmandt says. “Melting is just a mechanism of getting rid of the water,” he says. If the surface water the Earth possesses today came from such degassing of molten rock, the researchers say, that’s in contrast to the theory held by some scientists that water came to a young Earth by way of large, icy comets. It is of course the existence of liquid water on the surface of the Earth that makes our planet habitable and capable of supporting life, which is why its origin is of such interest to science. The latest findings are strong evidence of a process where water has long been cycling between deep interior reservoirs and the surface through the action of plate tectonics, the researchers say. “Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades,” Jacobsen says. And they may just have found it. –Tech Times

    In 1981 the gaseous decay products from potassium and uranium were used to show that only about 17% of the Earth has degassed to produce the oceans and atmosphere [O. K. Manuel and D. D. Sabu, “The noble gas record of the terrestrial planets,” Geochemical Journal 15, 247-267 (1981)]. http://www.omatumr.com/archive/NobleGas.pdf

      Earth accreted in layers out of the heterogeneous supernova debris orbiting the Sun’s pulsar core after the Sun exploded five billion years (5 Ga) ago:

      1. Beginning with accretion of iron meteorites into Earth’s iron-rich core;
      2. Followed by the accretion of stone meteorites into the Earth’s mantle; and
      3. Then partial melting of the upper mantle to form the crust, oceans and atmosphere.

      Unreported CHAOS and FEAR of nuclear annihilation in late August 1945 convinced world leaders to hide the source of energy in cores of heavy atoms, ordinary stars and galaxies:

    Just a rogue thought but….I wonder if this might better explain why the oceans are ” salty”..

    Of course the water comes from our star, as anyone who has studied ‘starwater; would already know. But for some reason the atheist science body wants us to believe it was comets! Well where do the comets come from you idiots? Thats right, its water being emitted from our stars which goes out into the depths of space and returns as a melting comet. Anyone seen how many sun-diving comets hit our star every year? Anywhere from 200-1000 per annum, and sometimes as many as 25 in 10 days, but who really knows?

    Of course, since I believe in the Biblical account of the Flood, this doesn’t surprise me.

    In the Book of Genesis, in the account of Noah’s Ark, the water of The Great Flood comes – not only as 40 days of rainfall – but also, from the breaking up of the “fountains of the Great Deep…” Google “The Deepest Hole” for an account of the Russians, whilst drilling the world’s deepest hole (7 1/2 miles), finding water and many small sea shells at depths of 5 miles.

    Could it be that all of that water got there via the explanation given in Genesis? Nah, there is no God, I think because science hasn’t proven that yet. When they declare He exists, then and only then He will exist.

    The MYTH of Noah was plagiarized from the Babylonian tale of Gilgamesh. And every LITERATE person knows that.

      Hey, harry, not that I have much interest in squabbling over myths, but it’s common knowledge that EVERY culture in the world has a flood story, so regardless of whether or not the account of Noah was plagiarized from the Epic of Gilgamesh or not is sort of beside the point, or, for that matter, if the Epic of Gilgamesh was actually borrowed from the story of Noah, because we are, in this instance, discussing the existence/pre-existence of archaeological artifacts, and just because there is no proof today, one might argue that the Noah story is actually the elder, an argument which can neither be proven nor, beyond doubt, disproven, and so we turn round-and-round. However, most literate Bible scholars understand (and as is taught in most Jewish Seminaries) that the first 11 chapters of Genesis are not LITERAL teachings but are condensed allegory. Thus, Adam and Eve may not have literally existed in an actual garden of Eden, nor did Eve actually confront an actual serpent, but the story is used to illustrate that the existence of sin upon mankind came into being when a wise creature manipulated an innocent one, which is to say that the nature of sin is not technically the fault of humans, which illustrates, therefore, the GOOD NEWS of the Gospels, that the willing sacrifice of Jesus, beloved of God, serves as the blood sacrifice that cleanses all from sin. That is, because sin is not the fault of man, the burden of “repentance” falls on God, and He proves through his only begotten that HIS love is stronger than sin. We can debate and split hairs and argue, but anything that detracts from the truth is, to paraphrase Paul in 2 Tim 2:22-25 and Titus 3:9, useless and stoopid. So, all this is to say, try not “pitch the baby out with the bathwater” and get so hung up on “myths” that you fail to see the truth.

        You say the epic of Gilgamesh was ‘borrowed’ from the story of Noah, yet the epic was written much earlier in time. Maybe a little thought towards timeline would guide you to believe that the Bible didn’t have the first account of this flood. Also the old testament is all stories… don’t put the word ‘truth’ in association to something that is but a myth/story.

    The ancient Sumerians already knew this story about the vast undreground ocean. In their myths it is called Apsu or Abzu and the Lord of Abzu is Enki (Sumer) or Ea (Babylonia and Assyria). Everything in the Old Testament stories and anyone can verify it comes from sumerian and babylonian mythologies. Including the story of Noach that is called Ziusudra (he who has found life) in Sumer or Atrachasis in Akkad or Babylonia or Uta-Napishtim in Assyria. And these stories were known some 3000 years befor the Ancient Testament was written.
