Villagers run for their lives as Sinabung volcano kills 16 in Indonesia

February 1, 2014MOUNT SINABUNG, Indonesia A rumbling volcano in western Indonesia on Saturday unleashed fresh clouds of searing gas that killed at least 16 people and injured three, only a day after villagers who fled earlier eruptions returned home thinking it was safe, officials said. The dead included four high school students on a school trip to see the volcano and a local journalist, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. He said that the government on Friday allowed nearly 14,000 people living outside a three-mile danger zone to return home after the volcano’s activity decreased. Mount Sinabung’s morning eruption was followed by a more powerful blast that sent lava and pyroclastic flows down southern slopes up to 2.8 miles away, Nugroho said. Television footage showed villages, farms and trees around the 8,530-foot -high volcano covered in thick gray ash. Authorities were still preventing more than 16,000 villagers living along the path of hot clouds from going back to their homes, but many of them insisted on checking their houses and farms after more than four months of being crammed into temporary shelters. Authorities raised the alert status for Sinabung to the highest level in November. “The death toll is likely to rise as many people are reported still missing and the darkness hampered our rescue efforts,” said Lt. Col. Asep Sukarna, who led the rescue operation.
The number of evacuees rose to more than 30,000. Many wore masks to protect against the soot and sulfur-choked air. Food, emergency tents and medicine were sent to the area. The latest eruptions came just a week after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono visited displaced villagers and pledged to relocate them to new plots with permanent housing. The volcano’s last major eruption in August 2010 killed two people and forced 30,000 others to flee. It caught many scientists off guard because it had been quiet for four centuries. Mount Sinabung is among about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia and has sporadically erupted since September. Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin. –NY Post

I can’t believe human stupidity !!! “High school students on a school trip to see the volcano” !!! I always said that when stupid people are dying driving drunk or doing jackass stuff, it’s call natural selection but this time “adults” were in charge of those poor students who died !!! It’s just showing that our governments (who we think are responsible) will never be ahead of catastrophes when they’ll happen, we’re better on our own… Incredible…

So sad for these people. And I just can’t understand why high school students would be on a field trip to see an active volcano. Education people! Know what these things are capable of doing. They can erupt at any time without warning. Praying.

Let that be a lesson for us. Don’t go to look at a volcano, because the volcano may decide to see you as well.

  5. There is no living thing could survive a volcanic eruption. Hot lava, hot ash and sulfur-containing air will pursue all living creatures that are in the closest lane. Find out how to survive in the face of the volcano, recognize the safe zone restrictions and precautions volcano in the danger zone.

As the Sinabung volcano problem, is that you due to the long time of lethargy, no eruptions for almost 400 years, people forget or ignore the risks and cultivates and sits in the vicinity of the volcano, exceptionally fertile land…Something similar happens in Italy, along with Mount Vesuvius…Security experts seized is the head when they see the slopes of Vesuvius, occupied as if they were plain, and the people living in the neighbouring town of Pozzuoli, sulphurous Lakes…These lakes are the indicator that down there is a huge cauldron of magma, ready to explode…It is a few kilometers of the volcano and national park that contains it is called Campi Flegrei…Authorities know the associated hazards, but do not allow it to more studies with the technique of drilling, fearing to activate the boiler…
