Study finds dangerous New Madrid fault ‘alive and active’

January 25, 2014MISSOURI The New Madrid fault zone in the nation’s midsection is active and could spawn future large earthquakes, scientists reported Thursday. It’s “not dead yet,” said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough, who was part of the study published online by the journal Science. Researchers have long debated just how much of a hazard New Madrid (MAD’-rihd) poses. The zone stretches 150 miles, crossing parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. In 1811 and 1812, it unleashed a trio of powerful jolts — measuring magnitudes 7.5 to 7.7 — that rattled the central Mississippi River valley. Chimneys fell and boats capsized. Farmland sank and turned into swamps. The death toll is unknown, but experts don’t believe there were mass casualties because the region was sparsely populated then. Unlike California’s San Andreas and other faults that occur along boundaries of shifting tectonic plates, New Madrid is less understood since it’s in the middle of the continent, far from plate boundaries. Previous studies have suggested that it may be shutting down, based on GPS readings that showed little strain accumulation at the surface. Other research came to the same conclusion by blaming ongoing quake activity on aftershocks from the 1800s, which would essentially relieve strain on the fault. The latest study suggests otherwise.
Hough and USGS geophysicist Morgan Page in Pasadena, Calif., analyzed past quakes in the New Madrid region and used computer modeling to determine that the continuing tremors are not related to the big quakes two centuries ago. “Our new results tell us that something is going on there, and therefore a repeat of the 1811-1812 sequence is possible,” Hough said. The USGS estimates there’s a 7 to 10 percent chance of that happening in the next 50 years. Arthur Frankel, a seismologist with the USGS in Seattle who had no role in the study, said the latest results seem plausible. His recent field work using GPS shows significant movement of land along the fault in the past decade, indicating a buildup of strain that could lead to potentially dangerous quakes. Others said this won’t end the debate about the hazards on the New Madrid seismic zone. Andrew Newman, a geophysicist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, said the method used in the study works well for faults along plate boundaries, but he’s unsure if it applies to enigmatic faults like New Madrid. –Yahoo News

I think the convergence of the rivers there shows that it is sinking which may be exacerbated by the heating of the earth’s core melting and busting lower crust.

Hi Alvin. I have read your books and tuned into your website for the past 3 years. I became most interested in the earth changes having become aware of the New Madrid Fault. I believe this could be the trigger for major worldwide earth changes. Could this be the case Alvin? Also, I’m living in Western Australia and I understand that this is not such a safe place to be when the changes accelerate. Any comments? All the best, and please keep up the good work.

Oh, and by the way Alvin, if you want to know how I learned of the new Madrid fault please email me. It’s a pretty interesting story. Cheers, Pete

    • Peter,

I think New Madrid will be one of many systems that will experience turbulence, as change intensifies across the planet. We will likely receive little warning when there is a sudden quake on New Madrid. Needlessly to say, it will be the major US news story for months on end, depending on the nature of the severity of the incident. It’s a very troubling and dangerous fault system.

Thanks for staying tuned in all these years. I’m fortunate to have you as a reader. Let me know your thoughts, in reflection about New Madrid.

      All the best,
      Alvin

It sounds like this report confirms what is written in the book, “Visions of Glory”. I was wondering if there were scientific evidence of such a massive earthquake fault in the center of the nation, now I know there is such a fault, and that confirms what it is written in the book.
    Thanks for the report..

This is hardly a “massive” fault, and a 7-10% chance of significant activity in the next 50 years is hardly a reason to adopt it as confirmation of someone else’s imagined experience. Go do some research about plate tectonics and you will see that science, not superstition has the better explanation of natural phenomena.

Here’s an article I saw today. This is were I live. I had posted in the comments about the lights a couple of days ago.

    MONSTROUS EARTHQUAKE TO HIT OHIO?

    http://turnerradionetwork.com/news/219-pat

January 24, 2014 5:55 PM EST (TRN http://www.TurnerRadioNetwork.com ) — A historic earthquake with monstrous destruction may be in the works near Mansfield, Ohio as residents and local TV report strange lights emanating from the ground.

While the local TV Weatherman claims all is well – saying it’s only ice crystals in the air – this phenomenon has been seen before in many places just days or hours before a massive earthquake.

(This story is NOT intended to frighten or panic anyone, but it can’t hurt to make some emergency preparations with food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, radios, blankets and such just in case.)

    Complete details below. . .

Some geologists and mining engineers in Russia claim to have drilled down the deepest ever into the earth, what they discovered, if true, is quite interesting. These geologists and engineers apparently lowered a microphone in an attempt to listen more clearly to some “noises” they seemed to here coming out of the drilling hole, the results terrified all there; what they heard was what seemed quite clearly to be screams of pain and suffering by large numbers of people.

St. Thomas Aquinas, possibly the most learned man ever, who studied and understood near all the sciences at the time, the 14th. century, explains in his writings on religion that indeed, hell is in the center of the earth. Other’s through the centuries have claimed to have been shown hell itself.

Practically, if one estimates the area of the center of the earth, it could hold, in numbers, all those that have ever been born since the beginning of time or of man’s appearance. Accompanying that estimate is the fact that the center of the earth is molten metal, a furnace of fire.

Consequently, some have mentioned that volcanoes and our connections to the depths of the earth, of earthquakes etc, are those that God allows the demons to do, especially in times and places where man has abandoned God.

It is taught in Catholic Theology, in studing the attributes of angels, that they are “pure spirits” that were created and instantly infused with all the knowledge of material science among other gifts, that an angel knows instantly, without reason, thinking, or comparing, all the laws and possibilities of the universe, that an angel knows the sum of all the knowledge man has ever amassed or ever will, in an instant – in other words science and scientists are less than a new born compared to an educated adult, in their knowledge and understanding of science, compared to an angel.

I live in ILL and I remember a tremor we had back in the early 70’s. It was the weirdest feeling. I was just sitting on my bed in my bedroom and everything shook. Not violently, but it still felt really strange. I’ll never forget it. In the newspaper the next day there was an article about the New Madrid Fault. It mentioned that this Fault could someday release a Quake that may rival any Quake in California. Only time will tell.
