19: Mt Marapi spews thin grey smoke: second volcano in Sumatra erupts

January 8, 2014 Bukittinggi, West SumatraMount Marapi in West Sumatra, Indonesia expelled thin grey smoke up to 200 meters from the crater into the sky, on Wednesday morning, stated spokesman of the Bukittinggi Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVBMG) Warseno. “The volcano spewed smoke after it showed signs of increased activity at 7.28 a.m. local time on Wednesday. Local residents should therefore, continue to stay alert,” he warned.  The volcano, located in the Tanahdatar and Agam districts, West Sumatra, remains on the second highest alert level. People living within 3-km radius of the crater are banned from climbing the volcano. Mt Marapi is one of the active volcanoes in West Sumatra. It had sent out sulfuric volcanic ash, one thousand meters into the sky, on August 3, 2011. The ash had fallen over several areas, such as Agam, Tanahdatar, Padangpariaman and Padangpanjang. The volcano is also considered a conservation area as well as a tourist destination in West Sumatra. When inactive, the mountains adjacent to Mount Singgalang and Mount Tandikek have always been a destination for climbers from within and outside West Sumatra. During every New Year, it is gets crowded with trekkers. –Antara

Geomagnectic Storm watch for High latitudes…

    Updated 01/07/2014 @ 19:20 UTC
Major Solar Flare Detected + CME
A major solar flare measuring X1.2 was detected on Tuesday afternoon peaking at 18:30 UTC. The source of the eruption was region 1943, with interaction between sunspot 1944. Because the flare appears to be long in duration, a coronal mass ejection is possible (see below). The blast site is in a great geoeffective position for Earth directed eruptions. Attached image by the Solar Dyanamics Observatory (SDO) below, captures a “wave” of plasma racing away from the blast site. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

Solar Update / Geomagnetic Storm Watch
Good morning folks. Below is an updated look at the visible solar disk on Wednesday. Solar activity on Wednesday morning declined to lower levels following a period of high activity. Sunspot 1944 produced the largest event during the past 24 hours, a strong X1.2 solar flare at 18:30 UTC. The event was associated with a Type II radio emission with a velocity of 1064 km/s, and a 10cm radio burst (TenFlare) measuring 8,300 sfu. A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) was produced and directed mostly to the south and west, however there does appear to be a noteworthy Earth directed component. Earth bound proton levels gradually increased following the flare and reached above the moderate S2 radiation storm threshold. Departed sunspot 1947, now located behind the west limb, produced an impulsive M3.6 flare at 03:47 UTC. This particular event was associated with a Type II radio emission with an estimated velocity of 697 km/s, and a westerly directed CME. No impact on Earth is expected due to this event. All other visible regions are currently stable. There will remain a chance for an isolated moderate to strong solar flare within the next 24 hours.

As noted above, a moderate S2 level radiation storm remains in progress following the X1 event, all while teetering very close to the strong S3 threshold. These levels are expected to slowly decrease as the day goes on. Click HERE for more information regarding radiation storms and their effects.
