Moderate 5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes buildings in Chile’s capital

June 20, 2013 – CHILE – A magnitude–5.7 earthquake shook central Chile on Wednesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital but apparently causing no major damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 17:29 p.m. local time and its epicenter was about 60 kilometers (37 miles) east-north-east of Los Andes, Chile. Officials discarded the possibility of a tsunami and said there were no immediate reports of deaths or damages. Chile is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. A magnitude-8.8 quake and the tsunami it unleashed in 2010 killed more than 500 people and destroyed 220,000 homes. –ABC

    Alvin, there have been no MAJOR(6.0 and above) earthquakes for 5 days now. This seems to be a quieter month than May so far. It looks like we have now entered another quiet period again at the moment. Why do you think it is so quiet at the moment in terms of MAJOR quakes?

    Hi Alvin from Wayne in Melbourne, Australia. This morning at 6.57 A.M. Melbourne time we experienced a 2.2 magnitude earthquake at a very shallow depth of 1 kilometre and the tremor was widely reported in our media down here. People reported that the tremor sounded like an explosion and one person said that it sounded like a drum exploding. It’s epicentre was half way between the Melbourne suburbs of Chirnside Park and Lilydale right next to the busy Maroondah Highway. It is the 4th minor earthquake to occur now in different parts of Victoria, Australia since the 14th of April, 2013. Seismic activity is definitely increasing in this part of the world and I think that it is only a matter of time before we experience a really big and deadly earthquake. We did have a significantly moderate earthquake here in Melbourne, Victoria centred near the town of Moe, Victoria that rumbled right through Melbourne on the 19th of June last year at a magnitude of 5.4 which apparently was the biggest quake Melbourne has experienced in over 100 years. I believe these are all ominous signs of a big quake coming soon to Melbourne and Victoria. What are your thoughts on these events and the increase in seismic activity in Melbourne and Victoria in recent times?
