Cold War 2.0: Russia to launch nuclear submarines across both north and south poles

June 2, 2013MOSCOW Russia plans to resume nuclear submarine patrols in the southern seas after a hiatus of more than 20 years following the break-up of the Soviet Union, Itar-Tass news agency reported on Saturday, in another example of efforts to revive Moscow’s military. The plan to send Borei-class submarines, designed to carry 16 long-range nuclear missiles, to the southern hemisphere follows President Vladimir Putin’s decision in March to deploy a naval unit in the Mediterranean Sea on a permanent basis starting this year. “The revival of nuclear submarine patrols will allow us to fulfill the tasks of strategic deterrence not only across the North Pole but also the South Pole,” state-run Itar-Tass cited an unnamed official in the military General Staff as saying. The official said the patrols would be phased in over several years. The Yuri Dolgoruky, the first of eight Borei-class submarines that Russia hopes to launch by 2020, entered service this year. Putin has stressed the importance of a strong and agile military since returning to the presidency last May. In 13 years in power, he has often cited external threats when talking of the need for a reliable armed forces and Russian political unity. Fears of a nuclear confrontation between Russia and the United States has eased in recent years, and the Cold War-era foes signed a landmark treaty in 2010 setting lower limits on the size of their long-range nuclear arsenals. But the limited numbers of warheads and delivery vehicles such as submarines that they committed to under the New START treaty are still enough to devastate the world. Putin has made clear Russia will continue to upgrade its arsenal. Russia’s land-launched Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) would fly over the northern part of the globe, as would those fired from submarines in the northern hemisphere. Both the Borei-class submarines and the Bulava ballistic missiles they carry were designed in the 1990s, when the science and defense industries were severely underfunded. Russia sees the Bulava as the backbone of its future nuclear deterrence, but the program has been set back by several botched launches over the past few years. –Reuters

News update : the Russians were having technical issues with the Bulava ICMB but those issues have been resolved, The Bulava is a hot little missile that packs a mega kiloton punch . This is not like another Cold War between the U.S. and the Russians this time it is the Real Deal . Sorry people . Get your affairs in order !

The bear is back and the reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated.
Those who visit this site on a regular basis, have read reports of recent “Cold War” activities by Russia regarding the testing of US Air Defenses, Resumption of Reconnaissance flights by Nuclear Capable Long Range Aircraft , the circling of our airbase at Guam and other activities. The point is, Russia is back.

At the conclusion of the cold war, everybody it seems in America got on the love boat and believed that we were entering an era of peace and a NEW WORLD ORDER. Many, except followers of biblical prophecy, believed that we were the only superpower and our willingness, our military power, our technology, our ability to produce, eventually overcame The Communists and their way of life. The US greatly reduced its nuclear bomber, missile and land based missile force designed respond to a soviet nuclear strike. One former Soviet Leader once said; “In the event of a full scale nuclear exchange between us and the USA, the USA would be gone, but we would get it in the neck”.

Well, here we are, here we are with the weakess goverment in our history and at the time Russia and China are flexing their military muscles world wide and with Russia making direct and in your face deployments in the middle east and WE are on the verge of a major middle east war with Russia over Israel.

While, it is true, Russian technology can be rather crude, it is effective. Many people did not know that in the early years of submarine missile designs, our missiles were reported to be ineffective due to a warhead design faults. Even now, many of our land based missiles are 1980-90 time frame and many of the people who designed, maintained them are retired.

Weapon treaties benefit Russia more than it has us it seems………..

Just my opinion………..and yes you should be concerned

I wish the governments and the people in the world would get off there flag ladden high horse’s and realize just what there doing, don’t they understand all these nuclear weapons will kill every living thing on earth? them including? surely the people we vote into power are not so stupid they can’t see the threat to if nothing else there own lives and work towards completely eradicating any and all nuclear weapons/facility’s on the planet.

funny how we all look down our noses at nature and animals yet where the only one’s on the planet working towards killing ourselves off, I think the animals must laugh at our stupidity not the other way round.

    • The big problem with your laudable vision of eliminating all nuclear weappons is that everyone has to abide by it, meaning every nation on Earth. If just one nation broke such a pact and fielded nuclear weapons and the means to deploy them, then all are at risk. Nuclear weapons is a Pandora’s box that never should have been opened but now that it has we all must live under their shadow.
