The calm before the solar storm? NASA warns ‘something unexpected is happening on the Sun’

The year 2013 was supposed to be the year of the solar maximum, but the sun has grown strangely quiet.
March 9, 2013SPACE ‘Something unexpected’ is happening on the Sun, NASA has warned. This year was supposed to be the year of ‘solar maximum,’ the peak of the 11-year sunspot cycle. But as the pictures (below) reveals, solar activity is relatively low. ‘Sunspot numbers are well below their values from 2011, and strong solar flares have been infrequent,’ the space agency says. The image below shows the Earth-facing surface of the Sun on February 28, 2013, as observed by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.  It observed just a few small sunspots on an otherwise clean face, which is usually riddled with many spots during peak solar activity. Experts have been baffled by the apparent lack of activity – with many wondering if NASA simply got it wrong. However, solar physicist Dean Pesnell of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center believes he has a different explanation. ‘This is solar maximum,’ he says. “But it looks different from what we expected because it is double-peaked. The last two solar maxima, around 1989 and 2001, had not one but two peaks.’ Solar activity went up, dipped, then rose again, performing a mini-cycle that lasted about two years, he said. –Daily Mail

I think this maybe one of the most significant announcements to come out of NASA, perhaps in our lifetimes. Why it’s so significant, is what all of you to delve into more deeply. Watch the video very closely, and take note of what’s said. It has significant bearing on what’s happening this year.

Two of the eight most intense geomagnetic solor events in the last 150 years happened in solor cycle 14 so from what I’m gathering just because the current cycle is unusually quiet so far doesn’t mean it will continue to be so…

      • Solar cycle 14 was the fourteenth solar cycle since 1755, when recording of solar sunspot activity began.[1][2] The solar cycle lasted 11.5 years, beginning in February 1902 and ending in August 1913. The maximum smoothed sunspot number (monthly number of sunspots averaged over a twelve-month period) observed during the solar cycle was 64.2, and the minimum was 1.5.[3] There were a total of approximately 1019 days with no sunspots during this cycle.

      • Solar cycle 14 and solar cycle 24 was said in the video to be twins. That solar cycle 14 peaked once and then went quiet and then peaked again years later then thought. They believe solar cycle 24 will do this as well, peak again but a later time. So the sun is in it’s solar maximum only it’s double peaked as in solar cycle 14. So, this is the calm before the storm?

your cryptic “most significant announcement…perhaps in our lifetimes” is overly dramatic. Solar observation is very new. Until about 30 years ago, nobody paid much attention to it all, there was no funding for it, so any observations were done very low budget with inexpensive equipment.
The possibility of any solar event affecting things on earth in these modern times with so many electrical devices is insignificant. Depending on what part of the earth is facing the sun in a 24 hour period, either absolutely nothing will happen (most likely–most of the earth is ocean) or a few “wired city areas” could experience some brown outs, should there be a MSE. Remember that most civilizations upon the planet are very low tech with very little to worry about as far as electronic interruption.

This is a piece released by NASA and their chief solar scientist – Dr Hathaway because all their previous forecasts have been wrong, altered and then wrong again.

NASA have a vested interest in the sun because solar activity to a great extent determines future launch and positioning locations of geostationary satellites.

NASA are a commercial brand. Many countries and private companies rely on NASA to launch and position their own domestic satellites. NASA is paid big bucks for this service.

There has been and still ongoing a great debate between solar physicists at NASA and various Universities regarding the makeup of solar cycle 24 …..and beyond. Meetings and conferences took place in 2004 discussing SS24. There was great debate wether it would be a large or small event. A consensus was reached. That consensus was forecasting higher activity than is actually happening.

The signs were already apparent back in 2004 that solar cycle 24 would be an unusual one. It was already found that the steady predictable cycle as has been the 11 year norm for over 100 years would be different.
So for NASA now to say that something unexpected is happening to the sun is a misleading statement. They knew it would be unexpected near 10 years ago.

Some leading solar physicists are forecasting a Maunder type minimum of solar cycles.

Just because there appears to be low activity on the sun doesn’t mean that large C.M.E.’s or storms don’t occur.

‘Something unexpected’ is happening on the Sun, NASA has warned.

This might be news, but not for anyone who stays with this site. Their prediction of cycle 24 has fallen flat. Now a new prediction, its a “double peaked”? OK.

But not a mention of any consequence to the Suns planets. Solar activity apparently only affects the Sun. All it does is provide heat and light to us, and the rest of the planets, asteroids, and comets. So no worries.

Solar Storms, it is reported, can cause power black outs, damage GPS and radio communications, can perhaps trigger earth quakes, wind storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and volcanoes. Also, (and I took the time to research this) during high solar periods, it has been reported that it also effects a persons central nervous system and brain function. It is reported it can make a person agitated/change behavior….(Hm)
Well, I found this info on CarliniInstitute.com And although, I might not accept everything posted on that site, I can bear witness regarding to some of the affects posted. But, if you know what is causing the problem, then you can work a solution.

In 1989, a solar storm caused 6 million people in Quebec,Canada to lose power.
Solar Storms can generate Auroras(Northern Lights).
Perhaps an extra powerful solar storm could disrupt the earths electrical system for a while
I do not believe that one would disrupt the grid for years, perhaps several months or less.
To lose the grid permanently, would make end-of-days prophecy fallible….

Just giving info, there are plenty of smart people who blog here that has more infomation

Maybe, and only maybe, low and changing solar activity is capable of causing change within the orbits of minor pieces of rock drifting about in the solar system. Tungusta 1908.
Cycles 22, 23, and 24 all show weakening, possibly from the increasing influance of the Galaxy and our unique position in relation to it’s centre. If the galaxy is capable of suppressing magnetic activity on the Sun, and magnetic energy can be stored, what will happen when the Sun continues its occilation and leaves the plain of the galaxy, and its influance?

I have thought that year 2015 will bring more perilous events because God is specific with numbers, and timing as well. After reading The Harbinger, I realized that the author is onto something that I already knew about God, that we have brought on these harbingers, and now it is a pattern. Last Harbinger year was 2008, now I have been suspecting that 2015 will cause more troubles: economically, worldly events, America’s moral, now this solar maximum.

    Solar Cycle 14:
It was reported that in the Southern Hemisphere, the waters heated up while the waters in the Northern Hemisphere remained cool.
So, can we say if we are entering a solar minimum period and so if so where there no sunspots, then can we expect abnormal out of season weather during the summer months?
The winters could be colder and summers shorter and during 1902 and 1903 there two extremely
    violent volcanic eruptions.
    1906- San Franciso earthquake.

I think we are going to a period of extreme cold on the earth depending on location and after that
the sun will wake up and move towards its second peak with worrying solar flares.
I was unable to fully run the video and I could be wrong….

Svensmark has some interesting hypotheses regarding the affects of solar activity as it pertains to his theory on cloud seeding by cosmic rays.

He also spends a little time in his book The Chilling Stars on the Solar System’s position in relation to the Galaxy’s spiral arms and the central plane of the Galaxy over eons which I though interesting and thought provoking. He didn’t however extrapolate as to why the sun itself has active & inactive periods. His main theme was to show how the solar system’s position in the Galaxy might affect the numbers of cosmic rays available to reach the Earth and therefore affecting the percentage of cloud cover over the Earth. He did however spend a lot of time on the affects of the activity / inactivity of the sun… according to Svensmark, an inactive sun means a weak solar wind which in turn means more cosmic rays reach the Earth… i.e. more cloud cover, i.e. more reflection of the sun’s energy i.e. a cooling planet.

From other reading, I believe it is entirely probable that various Galactic influences are what drives the sun into it’s active & inactive phases, as gravitational forces change depending on our solar system’s position in the Galactic scheme of things… both the changes in the solar wind & changes in the gravitational forces in the Galaxy that are probably driving the sun’s moods might indeed also alter the forces at play when it comes to bits of rock & asteroids etc. and thereby change their orbits, as mentioned in a post above.

A lot of Svensmark’s linkages to the history of the Earth through Beryllium 10, carbon 14 and heavy oxygen in ice cores, sea bed cores and many other offerings over the ages makes sense to me and until proven different, it will remain my preferred theory of what is the over-riding climate driver on our planet.

Oh and seems like I remember reading that some think it may have been from a comet and not an asteroid. Read that somewhere

Yes Tunguska came to my mind in that solar cycle years, as well. 1902-1913, now with all the asteroids flying around and several comets, tends to make me wonder even more. Thanks Alvin, sure wish my mind worked as well as yours does. But thankfully you are here sharing all of this with us as well.

Large meteor explodes over the Urals region of Russia in February of 2013

You’re halfway there, Romalynn. However, I want you to continue to build a case which may be acausal. Since you’ve touched on the premise, here’s your start:

      A. During a weak solar cycle 14, with a double peak from 1902 to 1913, an object, presumably a meteor or comet crashed over northern Siberia in 1908 in the Tunguska event
      B. During a weak solar cycle 24, with an apparent double peak, a large meteor again fell across northern Siberia and exploded over the Urals region of Russia in 2013.

What is interesting is the lack of sunspots effect on the earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is collapsing. The magnetosphere is weakening. How might that affect us if we get a large CME like the one that happened a few days ago – which was FORTUNATELY not earth facing.

Nothing new here. Has happened before and will in the future. Maybe NASA needs funding and is scaring people with these “omg, double peek!” news…

But what is interesting, is the Earth’s “magnetic field flip” what is going on:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal

…”They argue that the atmosphere of Mars may have been eroded away by the solar wind because it had no magnetic field to protect it.”

North and South pole (magnetic ones) are changing places and in the middle of that Earth will be unprotected by the Magnetic Field that takes 95% of the Solar wind punch…

How far is that going now?

I don’t trust NASA in giving us honest information. NASA and our Government is usually minimizing and/or withholding significance info to keep folks calm. One minute NASA is telling us that they are “baffled by the apparent lack of activity” and the next they are telling us the opposite. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sdo/news/solar-activity.html

I also remember reading about a flare so huge that SOHO couldn’t capture all of it within a photo.
    http://www.space.com/14811-huge-solar-flares-erupt-sun.html

    In Sept 2012 NASA reported:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/04/solar-flare-light-bulb-sun-nasa-soho-spacecraft_n_1853695.html

And in Feb 2013 I read “A long-lasting solar flare erupted from the sun early Saturday (Feb. 9), triggering an intense sun eruption aimed squarely at Earth”
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/11/solar-flare-2013-earth_n_2661587.html

I’m glad that NASA has admitted they have no clue as to what is going on today…..because clearly they don’t! The old adage of “Hope for the best and PREPARE for the worst.” is the best route to take imho. This website offers us ample “heads-up” information on ‘why’ its important to prepare for the future. And for that… I am most grateful. ♥
