NASA sees monster sunspot growing fast, solar storms possible

February 22, 2013SPACE – A colossal sunspot on the surface of the sun is large enough to swallow six Earths whole, and could trigger solar flares this week, NASA scientists say. The giant sunspot was captured on camera by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory as it swelled to enormous proportions over the 48 hours spanning Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 19 and 20). SDO is one of several spacecraft that constantly monitor the sun’s space weather environment. “It has grown to over six Earth diameters across, but its full extent is hard to judge since the spot lies on a sphere, not a flat disk,” wrote NASA spokeswoman Karen Fox, of the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in an image description. The sunspot region is actually a collection of dark blemishes on the surface of the sun that evolved rapidly over the last two days. Sunspots form from shifting magnetic fields at the sun’s surface, and are actually cooler than their surrounding solar material. According to Fox, some of the intense magnetic fields in the sunspot region are pointing in opposite directions, making it ripe for solar activity. “This is a fairly unstable configuration that scientists know can lead to eruptions of radiation on the sun called solar flares,” Fox explained. The sun is currently in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle and is expected to reach peak activity sometime this year. The current sun weather cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory launched in 2010 and is just one of a fleet of spacecraft keeping close watch on the sun for signs of solar flares, eruptions and other space weather events. –Yahoo News

Is this the biggest one so far?

  2. bobby90247 says:

You know…in early 2012, a large solar flare actually enveloped the Earth. The magnetic poles completely “flipped!” Unfortunately…NOTHING HAPPENED!!!

That’s right! Nothing happened! Satellites were not “knocked-out”, the Earth didn’t turn “upside-down”, there were no “earthquakes, eruptions, or tsunamis”, and ALL the DOOMSDAY predictions by these “scientists”.,..didn’t materialize!

Don’t bother looking for the evidence as it was taken down almost as soon as “they” realized “NOTHING HAPPENED!!!”

    • Zehuti says:

Hu? many THINGS HAPPENING!!! Wait until the comets affects our sun, i think the nazis knows something about it…

    • Bone Idle says:

The Carrington Flare was a fact. If such an event were to happen now … had better be prepped.

      • bobby90247 says:

WOW…everyone “missed” the flare that actually enveloped the entire Earth last year…didn’t you! Don’t bother looking for the data as it was removed immediately. Truth-of-the-matter is, it did, the Earth’s magnetic fields completely “flipped”, and…NOTHING HAPPENED!

        Satellites weren’t “knocked-out” and astronauts weren’t “fried”…hmmm???

        “…now what?”

I’m not about to try and convince anyone here about this…it’s a “fact!”

        so please…don’t bother responding as I’ve said what I “know”…and that’s that!

This could easily be the BIG ONE

  4. Kaos says:

On This alvin, have you looked at solarhams farside watch?
This mentioned 1678 is small when compared to Former sunspot 1670.
I’ll be watching that rotate around…

Ps – love the EP and keep up the amazing work. I tell everyone I know about this site, and your putting the media to shame.
Hardly hear about any of these things you post on tv.

The sunspot is headed away from Earth, posing no threat. I think you’re late on this one

  7. Bone Idle says:

Unfortunately this press release is a little bit of a beat up. Solar flares have been occurring quite regularly in the last year or so – some quite large. Fortunately none has been directly aimed at the earth.

The sun is in sunspot cycle 24. The sunspot count is extremely low for this phase of the cycle. The radio wave measurements are extremely low for this phase of the cycle. There is one measurement – The AP frequency it’s at all time record lows. The solar activity for this phase of the cycle is extremely low.
Solar scientists are seeing the sun as has never been recorded in the technological age. It’s extremely interesting for them. All predicted solar activity is subject to weekly or monthly observations and revision. One solar scientist has remarked – Quote : “we are in uncharted territory as far as the suns activity is concerned”
The kicker is that a major CME such as the Carrington Event could still be released even at these extremely low readings of solar activity.

The current sunspots are quite small compared to ones observed in previous cycles.

One must get a bit of perspective also. If you imaging that the sun is as large as a big beach ball then the earth is comparatively the size of a pea.

    • Garth Colin Whelan says:

Do you think it’s possible to say that because this cycle is extremely low, then it’s abnormal? If so, does that make it possible that the sun could reach a peak outside of its 11 year cycle?

      • Bone Idle says:

Differing solar scientists offer different predictions on the ongoing progression of this solar cycle 24. Some have theorized that the cycle has already peaked – others that the peak will occur sometime later this year. The last cycle – 23 was of an overly long length.
There are some theories that this cycle is the beginning of a 66 year low solar activity series of cycles. Others have predicted that the low series of cycles maybe the start of a little ice age or colder period.

As noted above, one solar scientist has stated that observations are in uncharted or recorded territory so in reality predictions of future activities are hard to perceive or at best predictions maybe moot..
It must be noted that solar cycles 11 and 12 were very low sunspot activity cycles. However it also must be noted that for those cycles the AP readings did not get so low.

What is interesting is that since the late finish of solar cycle 23 and with the onset of this cycle 24 with it’s relatively low radiation readings that the earth’s magnetic north pole is moving at an extremely fast rate

  8. Bone Idle says:

Here is a current image of the suns sunspots. Hardly any at all and these are very small.

The sun normally would be covered in many small and large sunspots at this stage of a normal solar cycle.

  9. William Hill says:

Ok this report is ridiculously over stated. This particular group has already past the earth facing area and has ZERO chance of effecting us at all. Solar flares are at a very unprecedented low for this time of year, we should be getting a lot more and more stronger ones. This is bad news because solar flares are what keeps the earths magnetic shield strong and the fewer we have the weaker our shields get. That can lead to more spacial radiation getting through to us causing more severe weather problems as well as earthquakes.

  10. Doreen Agostino says:

The Legend of 2012 is now and it is us. Changes in the sun alter all matter, a signal to expand our awareness now, awaken from a dream about what Humans are not, and embrace our heart intelligent body mind non-physical Soul as one, the only true Power to bring a coherent new world into physical reality. Changes in the sun and you.

  11. tonic says:

Going by cycles 22 and 23 then cycle 24 is off the charts.

Does it follow if we see changes on Earth, then changes are occurring throughout the whole of the Solar System.? Including comet and asteroid behaviour.
It is unchartered territory, because we have never had instruments to monitor this before, and scientists are only in learning mode in the all that is, probably, natural cosmic cycles of the Solar System.
Might only be that humankind were never witness to it before.

    • bobby90247 says:

i agree with you “tonic!” unfortunately, the media and government (which are one and the same now) are “Hell Bent” on feeding us (the general public) “miss-information” in order to put “their” agenda into place!

      • tonic says:

And one day, some force of nature will take their “agenda”, ball it up and chuck it into the waste basket. And a look of terror, and disbelief, will replace the smugness, they seem only capable of displaying, in times like these.
Perhaps super, super, computers can be built, a car that drives itself and tells you “have a good day”, some super duper weapon that holds the world to ransom.
But until we can predict the weather more than a few days in advance, or communicate even on a very basic level with some of the very clever animals we share this planet with, we are just blazing ahead without any concern or awareness of where we live.
Saving the planet is a noble idea. But the planet is quite capable of saving itself.( Been doing it long before we came along.) Saving ourselves from the consequences of our ever evolving technologies might be worth thinking a little deeper about.
Mother nature has a habit of wiping the slate clean periodically and starting all over again, without the least concern of us, our politics, or our technologhy.

    • Bone Idle says:

Sunspot numbers are still read using Wolfe’s original telescope from more than one hundred years ago. There are now satellites which intensively monitor solar activities. NASA is concerned for solar activity because any flares, CME’s or magnetic radiation bursts greatly affect the multitude of comms, weather, military, research satellites out in orbit around the earth. Further a Solar flare has the potential to “Fry” astronauts working in the international space station.

  13. Kikola Milovic says:

    I write this for NASA!
To date science has not figured out the true causes of the emergence of sunspot cycle. Sunspots aren’t the main causes of these phenomena on the Sun, but only indicators of what is happening, and we do not know why.
To make a long explanation, if one wants to solve this problem, it is necessary to accept the offer of “nonemphatic” people who may have a much more logical assumptions about the causes of these phenomena, but that many mathematical models and forecasts based on past events.
These 11 year cycles are similar but can never be set to conclude next cycle compared to previous years. This takes place over millions of years and have never repeated, so the number of decimals of pi.
Who wants from NASA, to study this problem, we can make a contractual correspondence. I will give you some idea and the formulas and sketches, and you technique and tehlologiju with finances, and you will see that it will not be in vain, because we are on the right track causes.
Look cycles of> 11.18181818 years, 11 reps give 123 years, which is a whole butterfly diagram, or multiple multiplier:
    11 ^ n, where n = 2.3.4, etc. .. get in which something special happens:
    1353, 14883rd
There are other cycles in which one can find something different Redistribution events. You have my cooperation address. I offer to those who have upper features.

“Nikola Master?” Has anyone here ever visited Nassim Harramein’s video’s?

“IF” this is truly a “sunspot” growing in size…then perhaps that means an extremely large intergalactic “ship” will be arriving soon?

btw…does anyone realize that the “plasma” that is ejected from these things is in excess of 85% water?

      “Things that make you go…hmmm???”
