Changes in the animal kingdom: super mega-pod of dolphins spotted off coast of California, vultures swarm NC

February 17, 2013CALIFORNIA Thousands of dolphins spanning across seven miles of ocean were sighted off the coast of San Diego on Thursday, a boat captain told NBC 7 San Diego. Capt. Joe Dutra of Hornblower Cruises said he saw a “super mega-pod” of common dolphins Thursday around noon while he was on his daily tour. He said the pod was more than seven miles long and five miles wide. Dutra said the boat tour followed the pod for more than an hour and said he’s never seen anything like it. “When you see something that is honestly truly beyond belief,” the captain said. Guests aboard the boat started screaming and pointing when they first saw the school of adult and juvenile common dolphins. Dutra estimated there were about 100,000 dolphins swimming in the area. “They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of stuff out here… but this is the biggest I’ve ever seen, ever.” Whale and dolphin watching tours have done particularly well this year, with dozens of animal sightings reported. Marine mammal expert Sarah Wilkin said the reason the large pod might be there is because there’s plenty of food in the area, including sardines, herring and squid. “They’re attracted to kind of the same thing, they might wind up in the same place,” she said. Though dolphins typically travel in groups of 200 or less, Wilkin said “super-pods” are not unheard of. “They’re definitely social animals, they stick together in small groups,” she said. “But sometimes, the schools come together.” Dutra, who’s been boating for decades, said he felt lucky to enjoy such a rare phenomenon. “You had to be there to experience it,” he said.  “It was truly spectacular.” –NBC
Climate shift brings vultures to NC: Thanks to a mild winter, swarms of turkey vultures have made themselves at home in Shelby, N.C., but town residents are wary of their neighbors. While the birds normally pass through the city while migrating south for the winter, the vultures have been sticking around this year, swarming lawns and making residents nervous. “We are just not getting cold enough to push them along,” Kristen Duren, an intern with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension,  the state agriculture service, told ABC’s Charlotte, N.C. affiliate WSOC-TV. “What used to be five to 10 birds is going up to 150 birds.” Joan Schmoutz, who has lived in the same home in Shelby since 1963, told ABCNews.com that the vultures normally flock in the mornings and the evenings. “They come and they’re there every morning,” she said. “In the morning, they throw out their wings and catch the sun,” Schmoutz said. “They’re not a nuisance in that way, because I like to watch them. But they do a job on the yard.” Schmoutz said the birds mostly stay in the trees, but estimates that there are “over a hundred [birds] on any given day” in her neighborhood. Schmoutz said she first started noticing the turkey vultures flocking to the area two years ago. She said she received a survey in her mailbox about removing the birds from of the neighborhood, but in terms of progress, “we haven’t seen anything yet.” –ABC

    • You do raise an interesting point, Albirrr…there has been a lot of seismic and magmatic activity under the eastern Pacific Ocean lately, and it makes sense that something as intelligent as these dolphins would want to get out of harm’s way. I wish we knew where they started and which way they were going. Alvin, can you think of anything happening in the general region western or SW of San Diego that could account for this?

  5. That is an truly amazing sight to see that many dolphins travelling together…maybe they’ve launched a crusade against sharks! And regarding the possibility of removing all of those vultures, whatever happened to the enviros’ foremost commandment, “Thou shalt let Nature run its course”? They have launched acampaign here in Oregon to eradicate numerous barred owls because they are crowding the precious spotted owls out – it’s called natural selection, greenies!

Could the dolphins be moving away from something.

I hope everyone there sees that ALL creatures have a purpose and that “removing” or calling it by the real name KILLING them is a bad thing. They are not going to scoop your babies up and for heaven sake they won’t stay forever so deal with the mess! I will say some prayers for the vultures that humans have some compassion atleast once in a while.

    • I agree with your comments Mary. The animals were on earth before us and God created them all for a reason. Here in England most people despise the Pigeons and the Foxes (they are all beautiful creatures). They do terrible things to them. It is such a shame.

That super pod may be a spectacular show of nature to witness…but these are natures highest order of animal intelligence and we should take this as a dire warning.
Mother nature and mother earth are about to unleash change upon humanity like we have never seen before.
We must take this as a warning and prepare ourselves for a rough ride ahead.
They know what’s ahead we are a out to learn….

Not quite hanging out in the trees……But have become a common sight along the roadways where I live, cleaning up the road kills or circling over potential client in the woodlands.
Also, in my area, I notice an increase in hawks (sharp skinned and red tail ) and who are getting bolder and seem not to fear humans at times. There is one that sits on a speed limit sign and seems indifferent to the passing of traffic.

We’re still over run with those things here in East TN. This fall my daughter counted 144 of them flying in one long stream. We were in hopes they’d left but there are still a lot. Dead ain’t the only thing they attack. They killed a lot of calves around here last year, we lost 2 and averted a 3rd stopped a third one. When cows, etc give birth they go after the calf before it can run away. On the News last year they were warning people, said they had over produced from the warm temperatures last year, I wouldn’t have believed it without seeing it. We got them off my cousin’s calf this year, bet one of them don’t migrate.

So, is it still a bad omen when the vultures start circling?

    Like

    • Yes…unless of course you are an ancient Roman, haha! They believed that vultures were the most auspicious birds to see, but then, with all the fighting the Romans did I’m sure that they saw lots of vultures! Personall, Irene, I agree with you…

the birds know something just as the dolphins, better pay attention, maybe those vultures are the clean up crew after the Madrid fault line gives way, who knows just have to turn off the tvs and not get distracted by stuff that is worthless and prepare ourselves, spiritually, mentally and physically

A unique harbinger we should all keep up to date on. The self enacted re-speciation of animal populations to areas never before seen lets us know there geomagnetic guidance is telling them to be there and second does there presence foretell an upcoming similarity in climate change miroring there original habitat areas?

I also can’t help but feel that ‘unusual’ expressions of the behaviour of nature, contain ‘messages’ ranging from just harmless change to warnings of things to come. Many of us humans feel and see beyond the visions of these behaviours before us – intuiting beyond the obvious seeing with our eyes, to knowing that something is changing (or has) or will change, and the non-humans have detected such before us.
When nature ‘encroaches’ on our established environments, and the response is to eradicate or remove, I feel more for the animals, as they are doing what is natural for them – responding to change. Sometimes humans’ response to ‘change’ in the environment is to destroy a perceived threat or inconvenience.
There is a reason for everything, but sometimes no rhyme to human response.
There is a message in each action – and a consequence to each reaction.
I hope that all made sense 🙂

  16. There are several bald eagles living within the city limits of Lincoln NE where I live and they have been spotted eating squirrels and also fish from a nearby lake. I heard that they will also pick up small house-pets and carry them away to eat.

I saw the pod! When we were in Southern Patagonia last month, we were following the reports about sea gulls killing right whales. Apparently the seagull populations are out of control due to feeding on open trash dumps. The Argentine police are authorized to shoot the seagulls. I haven’t looked it up more because it is depressing….Southern Patagonia is so pristine~

This reminds me of the movie Day After Tomorrow, where in New York all the animals such as Birds, sea lions and domesticated animals were acting strange and leaving in large numbers before that monster storm hit!

We have a odd sightings in the UK too, the common starling has decreased in numbers drastically in the last 30 years. In the autumn they used to be in flocks 1 million strong and fly in amazing patterns. They haven’t been like that in 30 years. Until the last few weeks suddenly swarms of 10,000 birds are appearing at sunset and flying their extraordinary patterns. Last time we saw this was 1979 on this scale. The point is this behaviour is Autumnal, not mid-winter!!!
