6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Kermadec Islands

February 18, 2013WELLINGTON, NZ A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off New Zealand’s Kermadec Islands early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at 12:19 am (1219 GMT Monday) at a depth of 34 km (21 miles), about 161 km south of Raoul Island in the Kermadecs. The largely uninhabited islands are northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. A magnitude 6.0 quake struck off North Island Saturday. A shallow 6.3-magnitude quake devastated the New Zealand city of Christchurch in the South Island in February last year, leaving 185 people dead. The country sits on the so-called “Ring of Fire”, the boundary of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, and experiences up to 15,000 tremors a year. This is the 21st major quake to strike the planet in the month of February. –Inquirer
Tremor strikes Elsinore fault: A magnitude 3.4 earthquake broke 17 miles east-southeast of Julian at 9:04 a.m. Sunday, producing brief, light shaking felt across much of San Diego County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake happened 3.1 miles deep, at a point just east of the Elsinore fault, one of the most active and potentially dangerous systems in the state. The southern leg of the fault produced a quake measuring at least 7.0 in 1892. Sunday’s event was felt in Alpine, Campo, La Mesa, Julian, Poway, Ramona, San Marcos, Borrego Springs, Pine Valley, San Diego and Solana Beach. A Sheriff’s Department representative said there were no reports of damage or injuries. It’s possible that Sunday’s quake was an aftershock to the 7.2 Easter Sunday quake of April 2010. –UTSD

It ‘s scary how i see earth quakes everywhere around the ring of fire, we’ve been ok so far in Vancouver, Canada..I pray to God to have mercy on all of us! And apology to our planet.. Hopefully everyone in New Zealand,Japan,Chile etc, etc. Will gain from the experience a strong Faith and hope that things are happening for something better …Even if is hard to believe sometimes, the human eyes are blind, the ones of the soul see better…

I remember when we saw a 6.0 quake and thought it was high. Now those seem to be on the low side these days. Amazing how things are changing so fast.

I don’t get email alarm for 6+ quake from USGS. Did they cut that service, they don’t want to scare people if we start receiving one or two alarms per day !!!

I think there was damage in San Diego. The 3.4 quake struck at 9:04 AM Sunday morning. There was a water main break on Nimitz Blvd causing a large sinkhole Sunday morning.

I am waiting for the big one, off the coast of BC Canada, I am in fear for those that live there, but I believe my fear for the coast is warranted… I pray they will be safe, God only knows, cant warn them..they would not listen and I dont know when it will happen, but its coming that I know..
