Meteorite fragments rain down on Russia: 1100 injuries reported; force of 20 atomic bombs

Large fireball blazes a trail through the sky over Russia. The trail of a falling object is seen above an apartment block in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Friday in an image taken from video.
February 15, 2013 SIBERIA Bright objects, tentatively identified as fragments of a meteorite, streaked through the sky in western Siberia early on Friday, accompanied by a boom that damaged buildings across a vast swath of territory. Around 500 people were reported to have been injured, most from breaking glass. Emergency officials had reported no deaths by Friday afternoon but said that 14 people had been hospitalized. Yelena Smirnykh, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Emergency Situations, told Ekho Moskvy radio that she believed the meteorite broke apart and fell in several places. Another government expert, who spoke to Moscow FM radio station, said he believed it may have been a bolide, a type of fireball meteor that explodes in the earth’s atmosphere because of its composition or angle of entry and can be observed from the ground. However, the governor of the Chelyabinsk district reported that a search team had found an impact crater on the outskirts of a city about 50 miles west of Chelyabinsk, which would indicate the meteor did not explode in the atmosphere. An official from the Interior Ministry told Interfax that three large pieces of meteorite debris had been retrieved in the area and that 10,000 police officers are searching for more. A small asteroid, known as 2012 DA14, is expected to pass close to earth later on Friday, NASA reported on its Web site. It was not clear whether the meteorite event in the Ural Mountains was in anyway related. Video clips from the city of Chelyabinsk showed an early morning sky illuminated by a brilliant flash, followed by the sound of breaking glass and multiple car alarms. Meteorites typically cause sonic booms as they enter the earth’s atmosphere. On Friday, the force was powerful enough to shatter dishes and televisions in people’s homes. “I saw a flash in the window, turned toward it and saw a burning cloud, which was surrounded by smoke and was going downward – it reminded me of what you see after an explosion,” said Maria Polyakova, 25, head of reception at the Park-City Hotel in Chelyabinsk, which is 950 miles east of Moscow. A video made outside a building in Chelyabinsk captured the astonished voices of witnesses who were uncertain what it was they had just seen. “Maybe it was a rocket,” said one man, who rushed outside onto the street along with his co-workers when the object hit, far out of sight. A man named Artyom, who spoke to the Moscow FM radio station, said the explosion was enormous. “I was sitting at work and the windows lit up and it was as if the whole city was illuminated, and I looked out and saw a huge streak in the sky and it was like that for two or three minutes and then I heard these noises, like claps,” he said. “And then all the dogs started barking.” He said that there was a blast that caused balconies to shake and windows to shatter. He said he did not believe it was a meteorite. “We are waiting for a second piece, that is what people are talking about now,” he said. There were reports that falling objects were visible as far away as Yekaterinburg, 125 miles southeast of Chelyabinsk. The government response on Friday was huge. Seven airplanes were deployed to search for places where meteorites might have fallen and more than 20,000 people dispatched to comb the area on foot, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. There were also 28 sites designated to monitor radiation. No unusual readings had been detected, the ministry reported. The area around Chelyabinsk is also home to “dozens of defense factories, including nuclear factories and those involved in production of thermonuclear weapons,” said Vladimir Lipunov, an astrophysicist at the Shternberg State Astronomy Institute. –NY Times
Force of an atomic bomb: A meteor streaked through the sky and exploded Friday over Russia’s Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb, its sonic blasts shattering countless windows and injuring more than 750 people. The spectacle deeply frightened thousands, with some elderly women declaring the world was coming to an end. The meteor — estimated to be about 10 tons — entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement. It released the energy of several kilotons above the Chelyabinsk region, the academy said. Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash. “There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people’s houses to check if they were OK,” said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow. “We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound,” he told The Associated Press by telephone. The explosions broke an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, city officials said. The city administration said 758 people sought medical care after the explosions and most were injured by shards of glass. Athletes at a city sports arena were among those cut up by the flying glass. It was not immediately clear if any people were struck by space fragments. Another Chelyabinsk resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending. City officials said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged by the shock wave, including a zinc factory where part of the roof collapsed. –Yahoo
“My heart is still beating 200 heartbeats a minute! … I saw this terrible flash, it was red-orange! My eyes are still hurting,” a witness from Chelyabinsk wrote on a local web forum. “I turned off all the lights, sat the kids on a couch and waited… Oh, my God, I thought the war had begun.” While NASA estimated the meteor was only about the size of a bus and weighed an estimated 7,000 tons, it exploded with the force of 20 atomic bombs. Luckily, “the atmosphere absorbed the vast majority of that energy,’ said Amy Mainzer, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The meteorite arrived just hours before an asteroid named the 2012 DA14 was due to come within 17,000 miles of Earth at 2:24 p.m. ET, a record close-approach for an asteroid this size. Jim Green, NASA’s director of planetary science, called the back-to-back celestial events an amazing display. “This is indeed very rare and it is historic,” he said on NASA TV. “These ireballs happen about once a day or so, but we just don’t see them because many of them fall over the ocean or in remote areas.”

And this incident occurred near a former major Soviet Nuclear Weapon Development Center that reports say is highly contaminated. I remember previous blogs being posted that the area of the galaxy our system has moved into is a denser part of the milky way and we can expect an increase in meteorites or being struck?……….I hope this isn’t an indication of what’s to or could come.
Suppose this had been a direct hit on this city and the object was the size of a bus.

Alvin, I completely agree that would fabric of society is just a thin veil which can be torn down at any moment. I saw this event in Russia and immediately thought about the Asteroid fly by later this afternoon. According to a telegraph article I posted on my blog they are saying this one was flying from another direction. Seems a bit to coincidental to me…

Well, the dangers from these rocks are apparent, and I’ve been saying this for years. Earth’s luck is going to running out sooner or later. We’re sitting in the asteroid junkyard of the universe. It’s a miracle of miracle, this planet, with its paper thin atmosphere, has survived for this long. These meteors and comets may also be radioactive, could contain a lethal virus, or could spew noxious compounds of deadly cyanide gas, like Comet Hartley 2- so the potential hazards of them crashing into the planet, or even making close swings are numerous and multi-faceted.

“Up to now, Earth has been extremely lucky to have avoided a major disaster from incoming space objects, but one day the planet’s lucky streak will end, and Earth will face an extinction threat from deep space. The solar system is filled with rubble and debris.” –The Extinction Protocol, p. 105

Is there any danger that this OEO (Outer Earth Object) will be pulled into the earth by the gravitation , if this object is moving within the space that is used by satelites, and its weight and depth, could its trajectory change and hit earth?

The asteroid that hit Russia, that was not expected, correct?

Correct. And the asteroid could also send other debris careening into the planet by a process of perturbation. DA14 need not hit the Earth to create a catastrophe. Someone once said, closeness only counts in horseshoes; but we may have to add another item to that list- asteroids. This is only the beginning…

You weren’t kidding when you said to buckle our seat belts as we do seem to be in for the ride of a lifetime! It is very surreal at times as we witness these events unfolding before our eyes. We must continue to encourage each other and to stand strong and have faith that our heavenly Father has us in the palm of His hand and He has promised us that “All things work together for the good of those that love the Lord” Romans 8:28. As you said, this is only the beginning….

Prepare yourselves for the misinformation stream from conventional science news sources. “This is not related to DA14” “Do not be alarmed” “Everything is under control” Well, it IS related. We are moving through a part of space right now that is chock full of debris. This is only the beginning. Of course, they won’t give us any warning when the big one is lined up for an earth impact. So everyone needs to be prepared now – spiritually, emotionally and physically. God’s blessings and mercy on everyone.

I had the same thought John… The dis-information media has already kicked into high gear on this incident. You have to wonder, does the truth EVER come out? To the general public, no. “Legitimate” science is just another spoke in the wheel of the propaganda bureau.

Regarding the meteor itself… This is the most spectacular, thrilling, and frightening thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t imagine the shock and horror of those who experienced it firsthand.

  4. This wasn’t THE DA14 tho correct??? So many are saying it is. Personally, I think if it were 2012 DA14, there would have been much more damage etc. Sigh, spreading rumors is just as bad as disinformation. It makes us look like we’re the ones trying to do the things we accuse the “powers that be” of doing. Getting facts, evidence, concrete proof is what we must do.

Asteroids typically travel in groups, so it would not surprise me if the small ones hitting us are related to the bigger one making a close pass. Despite what NASA says, I think there is a chance that it would hit us. We know so little about our gravitional/electricial field aroundd our planet, and there are pockets that are more stronger. So there is a chance that it would pull that asteroid in closer. While 50 meter is not that big, it still can cause lot of damage because when it enters atmosphere, it becomes superheated and can explode. We will see how it goes tonight…perhaps it will pass without any incident….or not.

Hi Alvin! Is it known where the 2012 DA14 originated? If the solar system in general drifting into a different gravity pattern I suppose nearby asteroid belts could be pulled out of orbit into the path of other nearby planets?

Density of asteroid field within orbital radius of Jupiter

Well, that’s the interesting problem because these rocks can come out of anywhere; even the orbit of stable planets. Trojan asteroids can be ejected out of planetary orbits and can become errant death bullets, streaming through the solar system. If you have appreciable mass, as Earth does; that makes you a gravitational attractor of sorts for these rock bodies of mass. Earth really is in a kill zone. So, Earth can be impacted virtually anytime, anywhere, with little or no warning, as with what happened from this incident in Russia.

In my opinion the meteor that hit and the one coming by today is related, it is simply too much of a coincidence. However, we don’t know if 2012 DA14 will actually hit earth. Last year when it went by it was a safe distance, and this year it is still suppose to be apx. 17,000 miles away from earth when it passes. If my memory serves me corrrectly, the meteor is closer this time than last year by about 2,000 miles. There are thousands of meteors that are in the pathway of earth as it goes around the sun. Many are small enough to burn up in the atmosphere, some could cause damage. It appears there has been an uptick in these hitting the earth the past few years. It is possible the earth has entered a zone in space where there are more meteors that could impact us.

It is so hard not to be frightened by what is going on now, and the uncertainty of what is to come, but most of all how to explain these things beyond our control to our very young children. In my heart I know I shouldn’t fear, God is in control, but it is not easy, as we see things speeding up so obviously and rapidly. I am overcome with dread. I suppose there is no way to truly be prepared, only time will tell.

      • I’m glad you found us, ADS. Fear is uncertainty about the future, and that’s one thing we do know about more than the masses, who have lived in relative indifference and unconcern that our dynamic world is shifting and changing. Our purpose knowing, is to look from the present into the future- which means we have some role to play in it. These events are alarming but none of us should be afraid of them. Each day draws us nearer to a new world of change and beauty. These may be the times that try men souls, as Paine said, but at least we know who is there to redeem ours.

Our best defense would be for mainstream news to inform us better on geological events as well as astronomical events instead of constantly downplaying each individual threat or event especially the unexplainable ones including booms and sinkholes. I’ve heard it said that the news does not want to create a panic but today in Russia a different kind of panic was averted when one politician thought it was an air strike from the U.S.

“Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.
“It’s not meteors falling. It’s the test of a new weapon by the Americans,” the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space. “At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies” to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency. ”

The official NASA explantion for why the Tunguska object annhilated itself in mid-air

We don’t know what it was and an official explanation is still somewhat inconclusive. NASA’s explanation of why the object completely disintegrated without a trace also does not hold up to scientific scruitny:

“It is estimated the asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere traveling at a speed of about 33,500 miles per hour. During its quick plunge, the 220-million-pound space rock heated the air surrounding it to 44,500 degrees Fahrenheit. At 7:17 a.m. (local Siberia time), at a height of about 28,000 feet, the combination of pressure and heat caused the asteroid to fragment and annihilate itself, producing a fireball and releasing energy equivalent to about 185 Hiroshima bombs.” -NASA website

      http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska/

For one, if the object fragmented; it could not have annhilated itself. Some claim to have found fragments of a rock….if that is the case; the object wasn’t obliterated in the blast. So, we’re still left with an intriguing mystery as to what exactly precipitated the sequence of events over Russia in 1908.
