2012 DA14 Asteroid to make closest flyby in history

An artist’s conception of DA 14, the asteroid expected to whizz past Earth February 15 on the closest approach in history.
February 9, 2013 SPACETalk about too close for comfort. In a rare cosmic encounter, an asteroid will buzz Earth next week, missing our planet by a mere 17,200 miles (27,700 kilometers). Designated 2012 DA14, the space rock is approximately 150 feet (45 meters) across, and astronomers are certain it will zip harmlessly past our planet on February 15—but not before making history. It will pass within the orbits of many communications satellites, making it the closest flyby on record. “This is indeed a remarkably close approach for an asteroid this size,” said Paul Chodas, a research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory Near Earth Object (NEO) program office in Pasadena, California. “We estimate that an asteroid of this size passes this close to the Earth only once every few decades.” The giant rock—half a football field wide—was first spotted by observers at the La Sagra Observatory in southern Spain a year ago, soon after it had just finished making a much more distant pass of the Earth at 2.6 million miles (4.3 million kilometers) away. This time around however, on February 15 at 2:24 p.m. EST, the asteroid will be passing uncomfortably close—ten times closer than the orbit of the moon—flying over the eastern Indian Ocean near Sumatra. Chodas and his team have been keeping a close eye on the cosmic intruder, and orbital calculations of its trajectory show that there is no chance for impact. But the researchers have not yet ruled out future chances of a collision. This is because asteroids of this size are too faint to be detected until they come quite close to the Earth, said Chodas. The flyby of asteroid 2012 DA14 on Feb. 15, 2013, will be the closest known approach to Earth for an object its size. “There is still a tiny chance that it might hit us on some future passage by the Earth; for example there is [a] 1-in-200,000 chance that it could hit us in the year 2080,” he said. “But even that tiny chance will probably go away within the week, as the asteroid’s orbit gets tracked with greater and greater accuracy and we can eliminate that possibility.” Earth collision with an object of this size is expected to occur every 1,200 years on average, said Donald Yeomans, NEO program manager, at a NASA news conference this week. DA14 has been getting closer and closer to Earth for quite a while—but this is the asteroid’s closest approach in the past hundred years. And it probably won’t get this close again for at least another century, added Yeomans. While no Earth impact is possible next week, DA14 will pass 5,000 miles inside the ring of orbiting geosynchronous weather and communications satellites; so all eyes are watching the space rock’s exact trajectory. –NG

  1. truth is it may hit us. we dont know its likely not going to but there is a 60-40 chance it will , strange as it approaches all these earthquakes going crazy at the same time.

The report I received yesterday is that it 500 yards in diameter not 150, that makes it much more likely to hit!

Amazing how 45 meters turned into half a football field. From what I have read it is 50 meters or 5 football fiels in size,so what else are they lieing to us about

last time I checked a football field is more than 10 meters long I believe they are closer to 100 meters or yards which makes it about half a football field

We have entered a region of space where this will become a much more common scenario. Sooner or later we will have an impact event. And even an astroid this size can create severe consequences – imagine what a really large one would do.

Although odds are incredibly tiny; I hope there is no one in the ISS as this reaches it’s closest point…of course even small asteroids can cause major damage when hitting a space vehicle or sattelite so really there is nothing that can be done about it. As technology advances; human life becomes ever more fragile and in precarious situations.

I know people are going to say that I am being flakey, but there have been lot of people having dreams of a giant tsunami, caused by an asteroid, hitting the coast as of late. Also, I have read reports of what is called “remote viewing”, where people see events into the future, and they say they see massive destruction among the Atlantic coastline. Do an internet search and you would get many results. So it might be wise to leave the coastline and move further inland on 14th and 15th, just in case.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women I will pour out my Spirit in those days and they will prophesy.” Acts 2:17-18

Nanoduck: Dennis E. Here: Your scripture is most accurate, but in regard to “remote viewing”, I would not place that as part of scripture or divine revelation. Wikipeda Id’s remote viewing as “the practice of seeking impressions about a distant or unseen target using subjective means,in particular, extra-sensory perception (ESP) or sensing with mind.
Now, it is true, that some believers have open visions,in that they are physically there and experience all their senses.. John The Apostle, who wrote the Book of Revelation had an experience such as this, but the term he used was I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day, I think. But, these are far and few in number and reporting.
People should remember, God is a Spirit and must be worshiped in Spirit and Truth.
You cannot find or discern God with your mind………..
To get to my response, I don’t think you are flakey and it is possible that someday there will be a great tsunami on the east coast because this site has reported the ability for it to happen tomorrow. In regard to an asteroid strike, scriptures report a star falling to the ocean, named wormwood , destroying 1/3 of the ships in the ocean and poison the waters. We now know through investigation of asteroids by Nasa that pure cyanide gas has been found emitting from the asteroids……. I am not sure about comets. Also, a falling star could also be a incoming nuclear missile…….The scripture calls it a falling star because of its brightness as it enters the atomsphere..

When people dabble into things of the mind, they do not understand, even the spirit, they open themselves up to seducing spirits.
What effect this passing rock will have on us is unknown, but as john blogged, we are moving into a part of the galaxy that is quite populated with debris that could hit us.

      have a nice day

Nanoduck, You are right about a tsunami on the East coast. I was given several dreams about tsunamis. Including the one where I live, which happens to be on the East coast. I was so alarmed about this particular dream, that I got in touch with a person ( that is well known and respected not only in US but also internationally) to see If the Lord had told him anything, about a tsunami on the east coast. His answer to me was yes. The Lord, had shown him a tsunami hitting NYC. Waves being eight to ten stories high. Including all the other states, north and south of the state of NYC. But,he was not sure how far south this tsunami would travel. I am in SC. This is the interesting part. He could not share the details of what caused the tsunami. All he said was “by an unusual event”. First thing came to my mind back then, was an asteroid. This was over a year ago. I am not saying that this one is it, I hope not anyway. But, with anything prophetic we really aren’t given the exact timing of things. I personally believe as the days get worse our survival is going to totally depend on how well we hear and obey the voice of our Lord. Alvin, thank you for all your hard work. I greatly appreciate your site and visit it at least couple times a day.
      God bless

……. I read a lot about this stuff, please stop trying to make people scared. If you think your government is lying to you, please learn about the subject. Money, Government, Space, Science. Could an impact happen, maybe, but for someone to say “we are entering a place in space where this will be more common” is an out right lie. Truth is we don’t know what is out there and can only spot and mathematically figure out what is means. Could an Impact happen, sure, 100% it will happen again (IMO) but no one know, thus we need as many people with eyes on the sky and interested, it is our best chance to see something before it comes (though ignorance can be a blessing with some things)
There is nothing to fear, join a sky watching club, or buy a telescope, it will really make you feel better once you get in to the info.
    Cheers Everyone!
