Massive sinkhole swallows buildings in Guangzhou, China

January 30, 2013CHINA A massive sinkhole in Guangzhou, China, swallowed up buildings and knocked out power to thousands of residents. According to Shanghaiist, the sinkhole is about 3,230 square feet and plenty deep. A video shows a crowd milling about the sinkhole before it expanded, causing a building to crumble as if it were detonated. Neighboring buildings were evacuated and streets were blocked by police. “Gas could be smelt from over 30 metres away, and deafening noises could be heard as the land continued to crack and sink,” the Shanghaiist reports. Sinkholes are, unfortunately, nothing new. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, some sinkholes are human-induced. “New sinkholes have been correlated to land-use practices, especially from groundwater pumping and from construction and development practices.” They also occur in areas where the rock beneath the land surface can be easily dissolved by groundwater. Human-induced or not, sinkholes are getting a lot of press these days. In China’s Guangxi province last year, a sinkhole formed after a local school dug a well to ease its water shortage. Business Insider reports that in Beijing, massive bomb shelters, “constructed amid fears of an impending nuclear attack during the height of Chinese-Soviet tensions,” may be contributing to the problem. But they certainly aren’t limited to China. In 2011, a Florida sinkhole gobbled up “a garbage bin, an oak tree, the back wall of the building housing a salon and racks of supplies.” A woman in Guatemala City discovered a 3-feet-wide, 40-feet-deep sinkhole beneath her bed. And in Ohio, a massive sinkhole caused part of a state highway to collapse. –Yahoo News

It’s been above normal temperatures this winter here on the Texas Gulf Coast, it was 81 degrees a couple of days ago, normally it would been around 60 degrees during the day and in the 40’s at night, it’s 10:30 p.m. and it’s 75 degrees. Strange weather the last few years around here, last year 2012 was the hottest year on record here in Texas.

And we can’t forget the huge sinkhole in Louisiana. Is it my imagination, or are these sinkholes becoming more rampant?

And this is only January. Strange weather for us in this area for this time of year. I’m not sure I want to know what springtime will bring.

Regarding the subject of sinkholes: I wonder if we are going to see more sinkholes in the USA from fracking? Occurrences of sink holes is nothing new. The problem with sinkholes is that there seems to be no warning when and where they may occur.
And, in an instant, a person or families life could be changed forever.

If this keeps up china is going to be one big sinkhole.. Every year now for about the last four years I have been hearing about these popping up all over china. Massive holes to boot.. Even read an article that it was being blamed on old mining caves.. Just like the one in louissianna. Ummmm before building a building somewhere you would think that they would know this.. :/

China Launching Gold Backed Global Currency

China is recasting all of their gold reserves into small one kilo bars in order to issue a new “gold-backed” currency. There can be no doubt that the US dollar will soon be history. China is recasting all of their gold reserves into small one kilo bars in order to issue a new ‘gold backed’ global currency. This is surely a strategic part of their recent push to sign new trade agreements with Russia, Japan, Chile, Brazil, India, and Iran. The cat is now out of the bag, the US will be given the ‘bums rush’ by the largest trading nations in the world and the dollar will go down in flames.

“The difficulties in promoting gun control show that US society lacks authorities willing and able to push forward reform.”

Obama lets Chinese own U.S. energy resources

The Obama administration is quietly allowing China to acquire major ownership interests in oil and natural gas resources across the U.S. The decision to allow China to compete for U.S. oil and natural gas resources appears to stem from a need to keep Beijing economically interested in lending to the U.S.

If you suck out all the gas, oil, or water from deep underground, there is nothing to support the ground above….duh! Granted, there may be other factors at work but human over-exploitation seems to be the major cause.

No mention in this article about the Louisiana Sinkhole from the collapsed salt domes where radioactive waste was disposed of fby our military for over 40 years, is emitting into the population living in Bayou Corne.

    • aaronwt says:

I thought I read that the radioactive material at that sink hole was naturally occurring? I know we have an area near me in a park that has an area that has some kind of naturally occurring radioactive material. At least that was what has always been said for many, many decades.

Whenever I hear of the word ‘sinkhole’, the first one that comes to my, and I’m sure many people’s minds, is the Louisiana Sinkhole – which just gobsmacks me every time I read more about it.
What I find amazing too, is that ‘man’ can only ‘get away with’ exploiting the environment for so long, before Mother Earth retaliates or her balances are so tipped that these type of ‘worst-case-scenarios’ can occur – where there is sometimes no turning back.

Just in regards to this latest Chinese sinkhole, as a bystander, I wouldn’t have been standing so close to the ‘edges’ of it – goodness knows how far out it could have crumbled. Also, I hope no one went down with it – that would be frightening.

      Peace to all.
