Rare algae bloom turns waters near Sydney’s Bondi Beach blood red

November 27, 2012 AUSTRALIATourists heading for world-famous Bondi Beach were left high and dry today after a rare natural phenomenon turned the water blood red. Bondi was among several popular beaches in and around Sydney, Australia, which had to be closed after a huge algae bloom transformed the sea into something resembling a scene from a Jaws movie. But despite the warnings a number of intrepid beachgoers were seen venturing into the water and swimming through the red surface, Ten News Sydney reported. Known as Nocturnal Scintillans or sea sparkle it has no toxic effects but people are still advised to avoid swimming in areas with discoloured water because the algae, which can be high in ammonia, can cause skin irritation. British tourists were among large groups of visitors who were told by lifeguards not to enter the water until the all-clear was given because the algae can irritate the skin and cause other health problems. Ken Roberts, 23, from Birmingham, England said: ‘Perhaps I’m just in the wrong country – I thought the Red Sea was somewhere in Asia.’ Local lifeguard Bruce Hopkins said: ‘It has quite a fishy smell to it. ‘It makes the water look like it has a coating of tomato-sauce coloured oil.’ The algae has already disappointing thousands who had headed to the coast to cool off as the summer Down Under finally gets under way of a prolonged cold period. The New South Wales (NSW) Office of Water has been carrying out a series of tests to discover what caused the bloom. One theory is that it was caused by an upwelling of colder nutrient-rich water. –Daily Mail

Interesting……I believe that in this past year of 2012, there has been at least ten or more significant reports of rain as the color of blood and waters turning into blood: Of course it is explained as an algae bloom…………….Ponder this thought if we might………..Could this be a world wide warning that we are on the edge of start of the judgment(s) described in the scriptures?
    Something to ponder?

People choose to ignore the obvious facts (scriptures) to remain stuck in their evil ways. Just because a person choose not to believe something or turn a blind eye does not mean that it is not in fact a fact! Read Revelation people, especially chapter 13 and get prayed up is my only advice. Don’t get that RFID chip and prepare for the Rapture!

    Alvin,
This is like the third country that has reported this over the last year. This was prophesied and will lead to what Revelation says about God turning all bodies of water blood red. With this, earth changes, Russia, Iran threatening to send missiles to Hezbollah to come against Israel, and middle east crisis, the signs pointing to Christ’s Second Coming are all over the place. Yet people deny and are blind to them??? What else does God have to do? Is there any point in physical preparation? Can we survive the coming Tribulation Period?

    • It’s becoming both dramatic and undeniable, as you mentioned. People are still absorbed in the cares of this world.

Why are people blind to what is happening? “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them thaqt perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:” 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11.
As for surviving the coming Tribulation period. That will be a time of God’s wrath towards those who have rejected Him. And 1 Thessalonians 5:9 says “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus.” Things are going to get rough and real scary, but I believe that we will either be supernaturally protected or taken out of here (rapture). And yes, I know that many here don’t believe in the rapture, but that is my belief. Regardless, my faith in is my Lord and even if I die in the calamity, I will be in a much better place. Have faith Brandon.

So, according to the Terra Daily report from 11-26, algae blooms are a barometer for the health of ecosystems, and, around the world, lakes, ponds, rivers, seas/ocean shorefronts (and rain, too, but the verdict is not in as far as cause) have been turning red with alarming frequency, and . . . where is Al Gore on this? (haha)

Revelation 8 and Revelation 16 foretell the waters turning; perhaps these “isolated” blooms are ‘prophets’ to remind us of the truth: ecosystem collapse is coming, and reckoning with it.

Whoa, is this pic enhanced? Why does it seem this is happening more frequently? I never heard of it before this year, and now several times!

It’s not enhanced, and it’s crazy that this is straight out of biblical prophesies about the apocalypse. The seas will turn to blood and all the fish will die, the sky will be on fire, man will be burning under the hot sun, the heat will be so terrible that man will beg to die.

      And so on.

It is all coming to pass.

      Isn’t that c-r-a-z-y?!?

This is just an atomic taste of what’s to come. Jesus described the tribulation as a time of trial the world has never seen and will never see again and think about all the horrible things that have occurred theoughout human history. It will be a terrible, terrible time. This is a time of WARNING by signs for people to WAKE UP to His truth and salvation laid out in His Word…God is merciful, gracious and patient but time is obviously running out and sadly as Alvin said many are too distracted by things that could be swept away in an instant.

Someone needs to tell Ken Roberts that the Red Sea isn’t in Asia, but in the Middle East. Guess he never read the Bible, the part where God parted the Red Sea so Moses and the Hebrews could escape the Egyptians.

Why 6000 feet? Not being a smart a.. Really wondering. I just moved to a city that is 7000 feet above sea level and found it interesting as I did not know it was so high in elevation (at least compared to where I was). Thx. Morgean

Algal blooms are due to imbalance in the nutrients in water.

The amount of Nitrogen and Phosphate being released into water by human action has increased, this promotes photosynthesis and causes algal bloom.

The amount of Silica and trace metals / micro nutrients released into water has decreased due to construction of dams, etc.

Silica and micro nutrients are required for growth of beneficial algae called Diatoms.
Diatoms are beneficial since they are consumed by zooplankton and fish, so they do not accumulate and become a problem.

Thus diatoms (generally brown) have declined and not so useful or harmful algae like Cyanobacteria (green) and Dinoflagellates (red) have increased.

Has anyone seen a waterbody brown due to a diatom bloom?
