Tension mounts: Chile shaken by 7 moderate quakes in 24 hours

November 22, 2012 – CHILE – A strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook central Chile on Wednesday, causing office buildings in the capital to sway for almost a minute but authorities said no damage was reported and ruled out the possibility of tsunami along its coast. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 37 miles (59 kilometers) southwest of the port city of San Antonio, Chile. It struck at 6:36 p.m. local time. The USGS had reported the quake as magnitude 6.1 but revised the strength down to 5.9. Buildings swayed in Santiago and some people fled to the streets in fear. Chile’s emergency services office said no damages to infrastructure were immediately reported. The USGS reported two other temblors with magnitudes of 5.1 and 5.2 on Wednesday near San Antonio. Chile is highly earthquake-prone and residents have bad memories of other quakes that have caused widespread destruction. In 2010, a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake, one of the strongest recorded, and the tsunami it unleashed, killed 551 people, destroyed 220,000 homes and washed away docks, riverfronts and seaside resorts. The disaster cost Chile $30 billion, or 18 percent of its annual gross domestic product. –ABC News

A 3.6 earthquake event happened in the New Madrid Fault area – Southern Illinios and Indiana yesterday. Kind of eerie living so close to the area and seeing all this activity. Thanks for your input and updates …signs of His coming are all over the place. God Bless and be safe.

    Recently had 2.1 tremor just a few miles east of here in southern New Jersey[ just outside Clementon amusement park ] a few days ago. It was reported to be just 3 miles below the surface. We rarely have tremors originate here. Most times they pass through from the mountains up north or from the southwest like last summer’s quake. Manchester which is close to the shore in the pine barrens was getting explosions[ apparently underground but no one has a clue ] late this summer. New Jersey has a high underground water table and I wonder if magma is causing steam in some deep caverns to explode and breaking apart some rock formations. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Joseph. That requires a deeper look into the geology of the region but the East Coast of the U.S. is actually riddled with a series of very dangerous faults. This is certainly the case with South Carolina, Virginia, and the upper Northeast. The sea floor spreading rates are also increasing in the Atlantic and this will further unsettle landmasses on the North American plate. We shouldn’t be too surprised if this region is plagued in the future by seismic events from the 6.5 to 8.2 range.

Hi, Alvin. I don’t know if you have seen the movie 2012 or not but the plot is that neutrinos from a solar flare cause the temperature of the earth’s core to rapidly increase. Are we faced with a similar scenario in this earth changes crisis? The Book of Revelation says that. Will we have to build Arks as well? What will be the cause/ trigger? In the movie it were neutrinos.

  The Sun is always a concern because its basically too large of an enigma for science to ever unravel in a thousand lifetimes…therefore its behavior will remain elusive and its patterns are almost infinitely diverse. If we don’t know much about the interior of our own planet or the oceans which cover most of the planet’s surface, how could we ever hope to have a composite understanding of something as large as the Sun from a dozen probes swirling around its orbit? You could fit 1,300,000 earths into the Sun…which means the Sun is about 1.3 million times more complex than our own planet. Stars are full of surprises…which includes unexpected radiation bursts, cyclical disruptions, and hyper-flare eruptions.
