Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquakes strikes Guatemala killing at least 48

November 8, 2012 GUATEMALAA magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Guatemala on Wednesday, killing at least 48 people, injuring about 150 and leaving 23 unaccounted for, government officials said. They warned that the official toll was preliminary and could rise.  “This is the largest earthquake we have had since the one in 1976,” President Otto Pérez Molina said at a news conference, recalling the temblor that killed about 23,000 people. The earthquake on Wednesday, centered off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, struck at 10:35 a.m., leveling houses and damaging government buildings, schools and roads. “It was too strong,” said Yesenia Miranda, 30, a pastor at a church in the department of San Marcos, the area hardest hit. “We’ve never lived through anything like this.” During the earthquake, the church’s walls cracked and its windows broke, said Ms. Miranda, who is helping operate a relief center out of the rooms that were not damaged. The city’s hospital, she said, had extensive damage and was operating at less than capacity. After a wall at a local prison fell, breaching security, 98 inmates were taken to a jail in nearby Quetzaltenango. Although no major damage was reported outside of Guatemala, shaking could be felt in buildings as far as San Salvador and Mexico City. Mr. Pérez Molina placed San Marcos, adjacent to the border with Mexico, under the highest disaster alert level and traveled there to assess the damage. Saying that aftershocks were likely, he asked people to evacuate buildings, especially those made of adobe. Shortly after the earthquake was felt, Twitter users began posting photographs of homes with deeply cracked walls, surrounded by small mounds of debris and buried cars. In some pictures, roads leading to San Marcos appeared to be entirely blocked by landslides. In a dizzying video, lamps were swinging and a panicked dog could be heard in the background. –NY Times
This is the seventh 7.0+ magnitude earthquake to strike the planet in 90 days.

It seems the ring of fire has been very active today ( Wednesday )

I am wondering about the quake in Northern BC coast , if it could have been a precursor to the activity seen today?

Alvin I live in Surrey B.C and we have had two earth quakes within one month. It doesn’t look good for us here. I think the big one is coming very soon.

    Good Morning, Bry,

Lots of earthquake action going on … in this area and in your area. We are both on the same fault. And yesterday, there were several earthquakes along the fault … one up by you, one in the states, a few here and a few further south in Central America. Things are definitely happening. We didn’t feel the big ones off the coast of Guatemala … I thought for sure we would feel something that large and that close, but no. It seems there was lots of damage in the city and in San Marcos.

In other news, I got my permissions for Tikal!! I refused to accept that they were closing Tikal for the 3 days of the winter solstice, and didn’t rearrange my schedule … and I’ve been plotting and planning to figure out how we were going to do our regular ceremony there on the 21st … and 2 days ago, the government called a meeting, Chus and Louise went to it … the upshot was that the government had done NOTHING to prepare for a big occasion other than closing the park. So they put Chus in charge of putting together a huge ceremony … VOILA … we are now part of that huge ceremony, along with all the tatas and nanas in Guatemala that they can bus in for those days.

Have a wonderful day, mi hijo! xoxoxox MOM

Until recently, I would post any and all quakes that were M5+. However, it seems like there are just too many to keep up with, so I’ve switched to signigicant quakes and ones I think are more unusual. It really seems that activity is increasing, especially along the ring of fire.
