Italian court convicts scientists for not predicting earthquake

October 23, 2012ITALY Earthquake experts around the world say they are appalled by an Italian court’s decision to convict six scientists on manslaughter charges for failing to predict the deadly quake that devastated the city of L’Aquila. They warned the ruling could severely harm future scientific research. The court in L’Aquila sentenced the scientists and a government official Monday to six years in prison, ruling that they didn’t accurately communicate the risk of the earthquake in 2009 that killed more than 300 people. The trial centered on a meeting a week before the 6.3-magnitude quake struck. At the meeting, the experts determined that it was “unlikely” but not impossible that a major quake would take place, despite concern among the city’s residents over recent seismic activity. Prosecutors said the defendants provided “inaccurate, incomplete and contradictory information about the dangers” facing L’Aquila. The court agreed, convicting the six scientists from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and a member of the Civil Protection Agency. It also ordered the Italian authorities to pay 7.8 million euros ($10 million) in damages. Seismologists were aghast at the court’s decision, noting that earthquakes remain impossible to forecast with any kind of accuracy. –CNN

  1. The sentence is far too harsh for a move that has been far too long in coming. Scientists are very well aware of the disaster into which the human species is heading and they have been aware of this for at leats the last forty years. Yet they continue to play down and suppress this information. If they are louder and more strident in their articulation of the fact that the current way of life of the human species and the objectives of its global civilization are leading to its extinction and possibly to the extinction of life as we know it, then some action to reverse our behavior may be attempted. Yet they refuse to do this and on the contrary they do everything possible to SUPPRESS all those who attempt to sound the warning.

This ruling may serve as a warning for all these scientists who fail to place their knowledge at the disposal of the human species and who thereby by virtue of their default are guilty of encouraging the human species to continue towards its destruction. They are in effect guilty of causing the destruction of close to 15 Billion Years of evolutionary action by their continuing refusal to sound the alarm.

ONLY in a country as backwards thinking as Italy, could you have a court decision such as has been brought to these scientists. What a FUC#$NG outrage that the prosecutors AND the judge could agree on such a ludicrous charge. If this is the way that science is looked upon here, I think the surviving scientists should tell the country “shove it” and move to a freer thinking judicial climate. Earthquakes are not predictable, other than knowing that when one is happening, YOU KNOW IT!!!!

  6. This just defies reasoning. In one breath the scientific community says no way can we predict earthquakes, and in the next breath their being prosecuted for not. Brings to mind Luke 21:20 when Jesus said “on the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.” Just looks to me like mankind doesn’t have a rational explanation for what is happening so they are blaming everything instead of looking to God.

I think that after this we might find that the geological communities all over the world will be on edge and will probably be issue warnings at the slightest provocation from the many earthquakes that rattle the world. Although in Italy, where sicentists have gone on trial before apparently, this trial seems to be unprecedented.

just goes to show “how far “some people are willing to shove their heads up their own butts, instead of looking at the truth of the matter. very disappointing, but i guess they already tried to blame this as an act of GOD and were told he wouldn’t pay up , so they said ” let’s blame someone else who had nothing to do with it either”.

this is just another sign that the people of this world have gone completely insane and lost all sense of reality.

When watchers of situations having access to the knowledge do their part … they will be free from any blood and suffering imposed on the people …

We’re getting into some dangerous times … some avoidable man made dangers that should have never been put in place … and many escalating dangers of unavoidable effects associated with these days of new beginnings ….

    • And when they’ve been given the worst-case scenario, and the best-case scenario, and probably several mid-range scenarios. You don’t need to be psychic to know that they’re next question will be…

“But which of those scenarios will happen ?”

Those scientists had absolutely no way to win this one.

Just from this article it seems like Italy has moved itself back more than a hundred years as far volcanic study is concerned. Who would want to be a volcanologist in Italy? The Italian government fails to listen to one of the county’s famous songs. “Whatever will be will be, the future is not ours to see”. This is very true about volcanoes.

  15. On the one hand, this judgement will put a damper on the inexact science of predicting earthquakes, but on the other it will just serve to encourage the already prevalent tendency to sugar-coat the probabilities of quakes. The bottom line to this court’s decision is that it is the equivalent of convicting a meteorologist for being off in a weather forecast.

We don’t put them in prison because they were wrong though, lol. We just stop listening to them and award them no credit.

In recent years, I have noticed how overwhelming the local meteorologist(s) have become
in the reporting of potential severe weather that often does not materialize. I ponder if they too or the parent company also fears court action from weather related deaths.

Also, consider recent recommendations from Homeland Security recommending that citizens stock up? For what.? Everything is to the extreme now it seems.

    WOW…..I’m torn on this one.

On one hand you have scientists that get all that money to do the research they love to do and can throw out a panic or conceal the truth without anything happening to them.(until now)

on the other hand predicting a volcano with any accuracy is still a ways off IMO and shouldnt be expected to be forecasted anywhere near as good as the weather and we all know how that goes.

I wonder how many volcanoligists are still enjoying their work there.

The bottom line seems to be more and more people are being held accountable for what they do and dont do which is a good thing.

After reading the comments here, I agree with you. So lets just predict an earthquake over any fault line (which Italy is full of) and not forget the blind fault lines. After awhile, people will stop listening. But when an earthquake does hit, the scientists can say “we told you so”. They’ve been predicting the “big one” in California for more years than I can remember. Will it come one day? Sure it will. Will a tornado hit tornado alley? Sure it will. But the exact moment cannot be predicted. This kangaroo court is ludicrous.

Those scientists were convicted not because they were not able to predict an earthquake, but because they lied to the people telling them that there was no risk and that they (the people) could go back to their homes without fear because no big earthquake was coming!

Judge and jury found them guilty of lying, not of not being able to predict.
